What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Nancy

I would tell myself to follow my own dreams and not to be intimidated by someone else’s. I realized that most of us follow our parents or possibly friends dreams due to impressing them or possibly to compete. A career shouldn’t be a competition, in all, it should be something you love to do and don't mind getting paid for it. During my senior year of High School I wish I applied for scholarships and really focused on my career paths. I wish my parents were more involved in my education but hey, that's life. I made the choice. Although I do have an AA in Business, I wish I actually ventured out and opened my own business. Well, everything happens for a reason. Now I'm motivated into getting my Bachelors in Nursing and opening my own Home Health agency. My story will be a testimony to encourage someone who was in my predicament... Oh yeah, I would also SAVE MY MONEY :-)

Crystal

If I could go back and talk to my high school self, I would tell her to not worry, just stick it out and you will be ok. I know High school was easy but this is real life, things are hard but worth it. You are investing this time in your future, and it will pay huge dividends. So keep your chin up, work hard and you will be receiving another letter from the future showing you all the things you will accomplish!

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would advise myself to dual enroll some of my college introductory classes instead of taking advance placement classes in subjects that I have no interest in. I would also advise myself to do all the research I could do on my intended major and begin my remaining college classes the summer upon graduation rather than waiting til the Fall semester to begin. Although my college transition was pretty smooth, I do regret not beginning sooner than I did. Knowing now how expensive college can be, I would also advise myself to save up as much money I possibly could.

Koryetta

My college self would say take a breath and hold on. Sometimes things in life aren't what you thought they would be. You have to research things for yourself to find your way in Florida Schools. Try and know what you are going to do in your life so not to waste time taking classes and wasting financial aid because you are not advised correctly from the beginning of your college life. Ask questions an ask again. It took me till now to find hopefully the correct school. Be proud of yourself knowing what you have accomplished so far.

Knowing what I know now about college life, I would tell myself to prioritize and plan ahead. I had no well thought out plan for my future. My ACT and SAT scores could have been higher if only I had studied the material and took advantage of the opportunities to seek help. Also, I would have researched schools and the criteria of getting admitted so I could have gone off to a university the first time around. Not to mention, I would have applied for several scholarships to finance my education because I had no clue on how I would afford to do so. Luckily, I applied in time to receive funding that has been a tremendous blessing. I know my faults and should have planned ahead. Although I went through that experience, I have since gained much knowledge. It has not been the worse situation for me but now I can help other students so they do not make the same mistakes I did. As my previous advisor told me, “proper planning, prevents poor performance”!

Assuming that I could go back in time to give myself advise on the things that I know now as a college student. I would defintely take advantage of it just to let myself know that college is not something you should be afraid of. When I was a high school senior I did not have the confidence in myself to take on college. I thought that college would be a wast of money and that I was not on the same level as my peers academically. Boy was I wrong! It took me six years after high school and facing some of lifes challenges to wake up and get serious about furthering my education. If I had the chance to let my high school self in on the hardships life has without an education, I think my past person would forget about the fear of wasting money, not having confidence in oneself and chose college over trying to just get a "good paying" job.

Roberto

If I could travel back in time to talk to myself as a highschool senior I would tell myself to apply myself even more. I would take the time and explain to my past self that college is a fun exciting time and to not put it off. I would give myself the advice to apply to more universities and colleges then my home college. I would also advise myself to pay more attention in math class because college algebra and math courses require a bit of foundation for it. I think the biggest thing i would advise myself though is to not take for granted the great priviledge of school because my parents havent finished school and I have the priviledge of living in the United States where everything is possible.

Being that this is my second time around in college, I feel I have gained enough experience and knowledge about myself, to provide great insight. We always say, “If I knew then, what I know now..” things would be different- I would be different. When you’re in high school, you only think about who to hang out with, what clothes to wear, which car you drive, and who is crushing on who. Unexpected blemishes seem like the end of the world, and the smallest concerns become life catastrophes. The best advice I can give to myself is to study hard, and put aside petty nonsense. There will always be the same type of party, with the same people, and the same music, happening another weekend. Friends and boyfriends will come and go, but family and your future will remain constant. Don’t worry about appearances, worry about your grades. Don’t fall into temptation of fitting in; your true friends will respect you more for standing out. Study, and push yourself to be the best version of you, that you can be. Take the challenge, not the easy way out. Believe in yourself and remain confident in your abilities.

Jeff

If I went back in time and spoke to the high school senior year version of myself, I would advise myself to never give up and to not compare myself to others because as a current nursing student in college I had to not compare myself to others and overcome obstacles to acheive the success I have half way through my college career. As a high school senior, I would compare myself to others on who had the better grade point average or who went to the better college. However after realizing that no matter how hard I tried someone will alaways have better grades or prestige than me, I gained confidence in myself that as long as I study hard and try my best, that is all I can do. Having this mindset has led me persevere even if I dont do well on a test. In addition I would tell myself to never give up. When I started college, I had to take prep courses which made me feel as if I would never finish college. However, by working hard I'm currently a nursing student in a very competitive program.

I would tell myself to work on study habbits. When you get to a college level education, everything lays on your shoulders solely. It is up to you to go to class, study, to extra work to help yourself further your future. In high school there are always people on your back to get things done, whether it is parents or teaachers. In college there is only you. This is your moeny and time you are investing for your future. High school is grooming you for college and the future you build for yourself. It has to be taken seriously. You can never start these practices to early. I look at it like a golf tournament. You cant win the tournament in the first round, but you can lose it. High school is that forst round. Build your skills up to make it down the home stretch. Old habits die hard, and if you develope good habbits you will be ahead of the game.

jandir

If i could go back in time and talk to myself; I would advice my self to try and do as many classes as possible and take advantage of the classes that count towards the electives and required classes. Also i would tell myself to study a lot because it is not easy and you have to concentrate on what your doing to achieve something in live.

Heidi

As simple as it sounds, it would simply be to seize the day. It has been a significant amount of time since my high school graduation. During this time, I received an education in life, but due to life’s circumstances have delayed my desired academic educational goals. I would communicate to my younger self, to pursue these goals as soon as possible. Do not delay, do not wait, and do not elect the simple road instead of the difficult one. Simply get it done, fight for what you desire, and do not allow anyone to dissuade you from your goals. I have witnessed many of my peers achieve their goals as I have allowed myself to wait for my time to succeed. I would tell her; NOW is the time to succeed, to achieve, and to surpass the goals and expectations that you set for yourself.

Gladymar

I would tell myself over and over again because I don't believe things when told once, to make every minute count. I would get help from my friends, classmates and family to try and overcome my shyness. By being painfully shy I have wasted many good opportunities thinking I will fail, I will embarrassed myself, that I will let people I love down. I would definitely prepare myself for the real world, the world you have to pay bills, have responsabilities, the one I have to do things by my own merit and not wait for someone to do it for me or just sit and wait for it to happen. Another thing that I regret not doing earlier is take care of my health, I am overweight, I had many chances to lose weight and I didn't take them. One last thing is my sister, She took the wrong path in life, leading to drugs, to crime, to things I never thought she would do. If I could play a video showing her that, before she does it I'm sure I can save her from that miserable life she has now.

ruth

Be focused, don't get distracted, think about the future, what you want to help others do, your ambition, and your parents.

kaylie

I would discuss the financial aspects of college and how important it is to save as much money earned as possible. It is fun earning your own money in high school and being able to spend it on what you want. Thinking about the future isnt exactly what every high school senior has their mind on. They have dreams but not the understanding of the requirements to get there. I would discuss how going away to college is a great opportunity that no one should miss out on. I would tell myself to continue going and not stop until I get the degree I am aiming for. Taking a break truly does set you back. I would enforce the thought that just because a high school friend is staying in state for school doesn't mean I should too as you dont always keep the same friends, but make more and different ones in college. Class work is on your terms in college not like high school where you supervised by your teacher. You arent a child and won't be treated as such. Work hard and save money and you will succeed.

Lester

If I was back in time and know what I know now and how I view life now, I would advice myself to enroll into college, believe in myself, don't worry about trying to please anyone or fit in with a certain group of people. Don't do drugs and remember life is much more than just a party! I would advice myself not to look for the easy way out, but to trust my ablitities. To take a chance on doing something you are not comfortable in doing. Most of all I would make sure I stay out of trouble with the law because it would get me nowhere fast. I would tell myself to study, and do my best, and make friends and enjoy campus life. Last but not least, I would tell myself to be patient, let things work for me and be a critical thinker, and goal reacher. Love myself and things will turn out great. This is what I know now and would advice myself if all can be done over again.

Clarissa

There are so many different aspects of my life I would have changed in my high school days. If I could go back in time and give myself advice for the future I would have told myself to not delay my education in any way. I also would have told myself to pursue dual enrollment because it would have saved money on classes at that time. The money I could have saved would have been used towards the education I am trying to obtain now. I also would have told myself to continue to pursue my passion, but by looking at different options. For instance, looking at a variety of schools where a nursing program is available so that I did not waste any more time waiting on other schools outcomes.

sheenah

I would definitely encourage the younger me to talk to a career counselor before signing up for college. I had to switch my major and colleges before I finally discovered the career that fit my personality. That's why I am now pusuing a Pscychology degree from South University. I would also tell my younger self to get as much financial advice on student loans and various options for paying for college. Right now it is a struggle to come up with the finances to pay for college and I am already building up scary college debt loads that is frightening. So in a nutshell, I would tell my younger self to know what you want to study and determine the best way to pay for it.

Esther

To my young teen self- You will succeed in everything academic related and will be a well rounded student. I strongly suggest that you save up for future tuition costs for the nursing program. It isn't cheap. Other than that, all will be well.

College isn't so hard, its making it in the world of an adult that is the tricky part. Sometimes when I was a high school senior I would think college was going to be a fly by, I thought I would get through in three years, the result of rediculously cramming my schedule with an average of twenty credits a semester. I realized then that you can't take eighteen credits of college courses with absolutely no money. You end up trying to have a good time, keeping up with time consuming classes, and juggling a job. So as a result of my dilema I have to say my only regret is not getting more scholarships. Since I didn't prepare more for my first year of college, I ended up having to take a year off and working a full time job so that this year I am more prepared, have more time, and as a result definately more motivated. This time I have started early and on time because if you don't, you will get caught falling behind.

Discuss with your parents, or guardian your college funds account. Save cash for text books and supplies. Spend as much time studying, understanding the materials and practicing the materials. Study at home but attend classes to get extra insights into the materials you study. Always read the materials before the teacher teaches them, gives a headstart, and you would absorb more. The more you know is the more you will know. Go play game or port have fun. It gives energy, good circulation, more mentally alert - you learn and absorb more. Eat healthy, get sufficient rest, study with a buddy- it encourages your mind. Know what you want to be, what you have to do to acomplish it. Talk to people who are in that exact field and try and spend some time with them and where they work if possible to get adapted to it. Do whatever you got to do according to their priorities... Teach what you know to others - the more you teach it and share it; is the more the material becomes more read within you and in your memory - you actually keep what you give - STRANGE BUT TRUE - I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE.

If I could go ack in time and give myself advice, I would tell myself to take my studies seriouly. When I was a senior in high school all I cared about was when the next party was. But now that i'm 23 years old and work hard for everything i have my education is everything to me. I woold containing telling me to study and to really listen to my mom, because mothers know all.

Alicia

If I could go back in time to when I was a senior, I would tell myself to take school more seriously. During my freshman and sophomore year, I was contempt with JUST passing. When junior year came around, I started thinking about going to college. My grades got better in my junior and senior year but it wasn't enough to have a high gpa. High school was a lesson learned. I take my school work serious now and I hope to one day graduate with a doctorate degree.

Kyla

To be completely and entirely honest the one thing I would tell high school “me” is that I am more important than I believe, that boys and popularity don’t mean anything when you get older. Also, most of all I would tell myself to be nicer to my mother and to try and get along with her more because she did do a lot for me whether I want to acknowledge it or not and she isn’t nearly as bad as I believe her to be.

Branda

i would tell "Me" to study eveyday, pick up my books and review what I'd had that day. Use every advantage that was given, any help and extra credit avaialbe. College is vey competitive, which in some ways will prepare you for real world. If you show up, do the work asked of you, you will suceed. Don't be concerned about socializing and wanting to be popular, don't worry about things you can't control, and don't stress. Read as much as you can and listen to your teachers, and take advantage of any extra hep they willing to give. Listen to advise given. Talk to the professionals in the career you want to pursue, to make sure, that's for you. You can always change your mind, but try to make smart choices and stick to your commitments.

Amy

If I can go back and talk to myself as a high school senior. Knowing the new transition of college is that. I would go straight from High school to Community College. Is the best way. Because going to State College is bigger step and Finanical Part is more complicated. Going to community college saves you money by Having financial Aid. If your not sure what you really want you will know in Community College. It opens the door for me to enter any University by having my Associate's Degree. No University Will refuse you. So, I would have gone to Community College First do My 2 years and transfer to State University to finish my 4 year Bachelors.

jaianne

With all the knowledge and experiences I have gained, I would advice myself to do better in high school. I know I did well in high school, but I know I could have done better. I should have aimed higher and strived to get straight A’s instead of settling and being contented with B’s and C’s. I should have aimed to get a 4.0 GPA because it would help me to apply for more colleges. I should have done better with the ACT’s too because combined with good grades a good GPA, It would open up more opportunities for me to get scholarships, and I wouldn’t be applying for scholarships like this right now. I don’t have any regrets from my past because I know that everything happens for a reason. We always learn new things from our past experiences. And with that past experiences, I will use all that to motivate me to be a successful college student and to get my bachelors degree.

alice

As a college student, I learned alot that they dont teach you in school. I was greatly disappointed about the false advertisement about FASFA. If I was more educated in high school, I would of applied for scholarships and save money from my high school job.

Lina

I would tell myself to stick to what i love. Do not pay attention what anybody says. If your heart is there you will always be happy.

PATRICIA

I like the engagement of the students and professors. It allows everyone to feel comfortable and disperse fears related unheard questions and feelings of inadequatecy. The class sizes are small with enough time for questions allows the class to give each other support during meeting times. The campus is fairly new, maintained well and very clean with the state of the art facilities and equipment. The orientation program was well organized, with diverse times for attendance. The staff is very helpful and friendly, always seeming to put the student's best interest first. They will always return callls, emails and contacts to ensure they are helping the student.

Cassandre

Education is everything without one you cnt really go far in life.

Jessica

Through my college experience I have encountered some challenges and obstacles that I had been faced with and through determination, strength and hard work I have succeeded. Attending college will allow you to obtain a better life and one will obtain knowledge that they will take with them for the rest of there life.

Karen

I value learning most of all. I believe that there is no greater blessing than knowledge. College has been a great learning experience, it has taught me how to value different cultures and religious backgrounds. It has taught me how to work in groups, delegate task, and how to compromise with others. I'm a junior in the Nursing program and I have to admit I have learned more than I could of imagined thus far. I have witnessed childbirth, open heart surgery, and saving a persons life; I am truly greatful for the experience I have recieved from attending this school. I also, value the teachers because they have worked in the field for many years and it has been a blessing to have received a great amount of knowledge from them. Overall, I value attending South University because it has helped me mature and grow in many aspects and for that I am forever thankful.

Carrie

I am a mother and wife returning back to school. I am fortunately able to transfer some of my prior college credits. I didn't finish college 20 years ago and have been home with my children for the last18 years. I am now in a position with my family that I am able to take the time for myself and continue my education. It took me several months of research to decide which field to pursue. I have decided on Physical Therapy for my AS degree at South University. After much research, I feel that this field will be a perfect match. I will be able to take my years of experience as a mother to help in dealing with and encourage my patients to healing and recovery. I , of course, now need to complete the education part. Being that I am a mother of an 18 year old, who will also going to college, and a special needs 9 year old, getting a grant to assist in paying for school is necessary. This essay was suppose to be how school has been valuable to me, but I am just starting so I thought "why" might be more interesting.

Teresa

Being a homeschooled student up untill I attended college the whole experience of just attending a class room has been rewarding. Also taking so many different college courses has led me to the path that I know I will be happiest in by giving me a broad background in many subjects. Overall I couldn't have asked for a more enlightening experience into the whole college experience.

Michelle

I am currently earning a degree in nursing (BSN) and I have attended several institutions to complete my pre-requisites before learning about South University. At South University I have received superior education with a dedicated staff and faculty. Because we are a relatively small school we are more like a family. During my college experince thus far I have had the pleasure of meeting many different people from diffrerent cultural backgrounds and experiences. This is valuable to me because not only Im I learning to be a nurse, I am learning about the wonderful things I can experience in life through others experiences. For instance, I have met previous military men and women who have lived through the current Iraqui Freedom war like myself. I have met several students with previous degrees and are back to school for nursing because of the recession our country is currently undergoing. I have met others that had a near death experience and decided it was time to make a change in their lives. Being in college has been an experience of a life time and one that will always stay with me and help me make better decisions in my own life.

Ashley

My education process came to a complete halt and now there I was trying finding a way to get back in school. I was now in student debt for over $10,000 with no degree or certificate at hand to show for it. With guidance on how to receive financial help for school I was completely and frustrated with how my life was changing.Meanwhile, my dedication to further my education had not faded, but was depressing to know I had nowhere to turn for financial support. Attempting to quickly start my career ans knowig how important education is, I entered a technical school putting me further in student debt of about $15,000 more, however, I was determined to continue. I knew that giving up was not an option.Eventually my education process began to progress and before I knew it I had completed Medical Assisting school successfully making the president list and having perfect attendance. Although I accomplished one of my major career goals my debt had grown tremendously. I am now one step closer to my initial career and continue to aim for success. I will not stop until I accomplish my degree as a Nurse.

Jamela

The help that the staff has provide has and is the most valuable asset i obtain from my college experience so far.

Robyn

I have gotten a new lease on life by going back to school. I've known the world of not having higher education and it's a life I no longer want. I have gotten so much support and "love" from people who hardly know me and it's the best thing a person with my history can have. I've gotten stronger and more confident and I'm sure that this is my road to a better life for myself and my daughter. The value of school for me is beyond any knowledge gained or respect earned. It extends to the lesson(s) my daughter can gain from my attending and graduating from college. I'm raising my child on my own and I want for her to see that no matter what life throws your way, you can succeed and that dreams (with hard work) can come true. She's learning the importance of hard work and how stubborness can be a good thing to have. A side affect of being educated is that I will change my meaning of being a statistic. I'll be part of the group that gives hope and promise to the world.

Adayiba

In this essay, I will discuss what I have obtained from college experiences and why has it been valueable to attend. Before attending college, I was very nervous of what college would be like. I thought to myself if I was ready and mature enough to attend college ;and if I was going to be able to make it to graduation day. I prepared myself mentally during the summer, and hope to be ready by the beginning of the fall semester. When school started in the fall, I felt like an adult resposible and mature enough to be in college. When first day of college came to an end , I was feeling positive and full of energy. After months passed, I started to build this inner emotion of responsibility. My homework and papers were a priority to me before everything. If I didn?t have my homework finished, I stayed edindoors till it was completed. Being in college has been one of the most grateful experiences that have impacted my life. I did not just learn responsibility but that I had obligations that I needed to meet in order to be a successful student and in life.

Cynthia

My college experience has been wonderful, I attended previously a private University, where I earned my Bachelors Degree of Psychology. I have taken online classes, where you gain a wealth of knowledge about your future career, you interact with people from all over the world and also in different professions. Where I am currentlly it is the same feeling, there is so much knowledge wanting to be shared with you. People help you to make sure you succeed in your education, it is a wonderful thing to know of all of the services that are offered to you..

Jennifer

Since I have gone back to school I have gained back my confidence. It has been very valuable for me to attend college so I can advance my career. I am currently a Medical Assistant and I am pursuing my degree to become a Physician Assistant. I will be able to provide a better life for my daughter and myself. I am also showing my daughter the value of school and how important it is to have an education.

krystallena

I would definately not procrastinate with school and worry about quick money from jobs back then. Instead I would be more focused on a career and finishing no matter how much debt I thought I couldnt afford. I would also enjoy highschool and egnore all the drama because that was my last free year for school and I would have had a decent date and went to prom. I would appreciate my family and friends more and guys less. I wouldnt be as intimidated by math and help my father out financially. I would still want to be the same person but with a new and positive outlook.
