What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Parents and students really need to sit down and talk about the reality of what it takes to earn a degree and what the financial cost will be. Due to the tough economic times we are facing it can be really stressful for both parent and student . The first year is stressful enough for both. Students need to realize that picking out a college isn't about status or where all your highschool friend are going .Its about whats right for you academically and financially. Students need to work hard and take things seriously but also enjoy your college years. Get involved do community service join clubs meet new people and remember your college friends are your friends for life. Enjoy.

Finding the right fit for the parent as well as the student has many factors. For the student the right school/college must have the curriculum, the social life, the size of classes, the security, the faculty support and participation, dorm life, variety in meal plans, career support, and an environment that is familiar and comfortable. An outstanding college experience depends on how involved, supportive, attentive, organized a student is. The more they participate in organizations and classes the happier the experience will be. Another aspect that must be considered is the financial cost of the college, a decision must be made to what the student can handle after graduation. For the parent the right fit is what the student decides. The student has to be happy and needs to make the decision. The financial aid process is not easy, can be deceiving and difficult if you are an average middle class family, with two average incomes, average grade student, not an athlete, not a minority. As a parent support the student, give the student wings so she can fly and make a future that will make you proud!

I think students need to think about parts of the school that are more important than just the party life. For instance, students need to ask themselves if they like walking far distances because if they don't like walking then a smaller campus is better for them. Also on a big school people aren't more willing to get to know you because they might never see you again, but at a smaller school you'll see the same people all the time, so they are more willing to get to know you. They also should ask themselves how they learn best, whether they are in a class room of 100 students or if they learn better in a classroom of 35 students, because smaller size you get more one on one time with the teacher. Students also need to think about if the school offers the right degree that they want . Students and parents should look at the cost of the school and how much financial aid the school offers to give. All theses, will allow the student to pick a school that will best fit them and that will meet all their needs and wants.

My advice to any college-bound student would be to step out of your comfort zone. Lots of times a student will research a college or university that is ten minutes from their house, or one that their best friend is attending, just so that they have some familiarity during the college experience. However, I would strongly encourage students to take a risk and explore places they never would have normally. Personally, I chose the aforementioned path of going to a school close to home along with all of my friends, but looking back now I truly wish I would have looked into other schools. Secondly, once students get to school I would recommend that they join at least one club, group, or team that way they are immediately broadening their group of friends and acquaintances. By being in a group with someone, you automatically share a common bond and interest and that sets you apart from anyone else. As for parents, I would tell them to let go. Although it is hard at first, a students college experience will reach its fullest potential by making decisions on their own, even if they are not the right ones.

Visit as many schools as possible and ask for honest opinions from students.

Shabaz

Make sure the parent and student takes an unguided tour of the campus, and also see what goes on in the classrooms that pertain to the student's academic major. Also, make sure to know how the campus acts on weekends and if the student and parent is comfortable with it. Lastly, make sure parents take into consideration about the best interests of the student, which is ultimately getting a good job after graduation. High school seniors really dont think about the big picture when looking for colleges, which is where a lot of people make mistakes.

Deb

Make sure that you take a tour and compare prices at all schools.

Mary

Go where you know you will be comfortable. Do what your heart tells you to do. Its always right and then you will never second guess yourself.

Jethro

Find The best college closest to home.

Jayme

Make sure you feel comfotable at the school when you are touring. Stay over a night to see if you enjoy the people (they are different in class than at night). Make sure they have your major and classes that you think you will enjoy taking.

Katie

Visit the school, and talk to people who are already students, get the truth not just what the tour guides tell you.

Aimee

Some things you need to think about when looking at what college you want to go to is how big of a college you want to attend, also whether you want to be in the city or more in the country. How far away do you really want to be away from you parents, but rememeber when you don't get to see your parents everyday you miss they a whole lot more, so keep that in mind. When you find the right school make sure you try to get involved in EVRYTHING, thats the best way to make friends! Another thing to keep in mind is not to do everything your friends do or don't do. Do what you want to do even if none of your friends would ever do it or you will regret it in the long run!

Kate

Go out there, don't be scared, pick somewhere close to home with friendly people!

kyle

Visit the schools all of them

Tara

Just choose the school that you would like to attend the most not based upon the price. You want to make the right choice and have a good four years and an overall good college experience.

Sarah

Visit the schools that you are looking at and choose the one that feelis like home to you. Don't go for the name or because your friends are going there. You get a gut feeling walking around on your tour and you just know.

Alicia

I would make sure to visit, sit in on classes in the field you think you want to complete, talk to professors and students around campus, eat lunch in the cafe and spend time walking around on your own, you want to make sure the campus feels safe and "right"(youll just know), see what current students think and how friendly they are, and lastly to make sure the program is organized and well put together, make sure you get what you will be paying for.

Alyssa

I would tell students and parents that they should go to a school that made them feel comfortable, had a good program for the intended major and close to home.

Sarah

College is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had so far. The advice that I would give to parents and students about finding the right college is to visit as many schools as they possibly can. They should visit the schools they are interested in while they are in session so they will be able to get a feel of the atmosphere there. This will allow them to narrow down their decisions and options. Also ask questions about your schools, no matter what the question is because the more knowledgeable about your school you are the better choice you will make. To make most of the college experience, the advice I would give would be to get involved and try to meet as many people as possible, whether it is through a campus job, club, or just people in your dorm, the more connections you make early on the better. Also take advantage of opportunities offered to you during your college experience. These opportunities may include study abroad, internships, and volunteer activities and so on. The more involved you are in your school the happier you will be.

The advice I would give to parents and mostly students about finding the right college is to pick one that you feel the most comfortable at. When you walk on to the campus for the first time you need to be able to see your self there and if you don't then it might not be right for you. Also, sit in a classroom and see if the size and the way the professor teaches is what you want. You also want to tour the campus while school is in session so you can get a feel for how big the school is. The advice I would give to making the most out of your college experience is homework and studying comes first. When you first enter college you are going to want to hang out with your friends all the time and you'll forget about homework. That's what happened to me. Last year I always put my homework to the last minute and chose to be with my friends all the time. I came very close to failing out so this year I have learned not to leave my room until all homework is done.

Christina

Start as early as possible, look for and apply for any scholarships, grants etc. Also, always fill your FAFSA out before Jan 31st. for the following fall.

Chris

DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL!!!!! Worst mistake I have ever made.

Gabrielle

Make sure it's the one you want. That it has everything your looking for to pursue your dreams. Don't base your decision on what others think or wnat, it's what you want!

Paul

Make sure the students understand that if they go to a big school there will be loud music and people all the time so it will be difficult to study especially not being used to that envirement. If they go to a small school it might be extremely boring and could give the kid depression issues again if he isn't used to that envirement. I also seem that leaving your door open in the dorm allows to make new friends easily.

When finidng the right fit it is important to make sure that you feel comfortable and at home on your campus because that is where you will be living for the next 4 years of your life. If the campus has a comfortable setting then you are more likey to do well in school because you are not as tense and would be more comfortable getting the help you need. The location of a campus is also important because that will determine what your social life will be like...will you go out on the town on the weekends or will you hangout at dorm room parties? The feel and setting of a college campus are extreamly important factors when making a decission of where to go to school.

Nate

Visit school when it's in session, talk to students. Find out what people do for fun and what variation of social groups are on campus.

Shelly

Go with your gut.

Christopher

Do not choose Southern New Hampshire University.

Parents and students that are trying to find the right college need to visit at least five different schools that are located in different areas. While visiting those schools students need to talk to current students and find out what current students like and dislike about their campus. I suggest taking notes about what you personally like about the campus and compare it with what current students opinions are. Also talk to professors in your major and maybe even sit in a class that is in session because class size and the way the class is run does matter! Once you have chosen a college to attend, you have to make the most of your experience. Talk to your roommate prior to getting to move in day, but keep in mind that your roommate does not have to be your best friend! Keep an open mind and give everyone a chance to become your friend, you can never have too many while in college! Also, remember to always keep focused on your school work, you are in college to have fun but the main reason is to get an education!
