Overall, Southern University is a great school with great programs, but I wish their communicating skills were stronger. Communication is very important and should be taken seriously so there isn't any room for confusion or misunderstanding, which Southern University lacks and affects their employees and students negatively.

Adriana

Southern University is a good school overall. I am with the Agriculture Department and their academics are amazing. All me teachers are accessible, the curriculum is easy to understand, and the classes are small and personal. Besides the academics, there is nothing to do on campus. Unless you have a groups of friends and you make your own fun, there are not many activities going on. After Freshman- first semester all the fun ends and it never comes back. If you aren't into partying where there is alcohol, you'll mostly stay in your room until, sophomore when you can have a car and drive off campus. There are places to go in Baton Rouge that are fun, but it is no where near the campus. The Housing situation is extremely overpriced for what you actually get. If possible you might be better off getting an apartment somewhere and commuting everyday. The internet connection is almost nonexistent at times, One semester we went without cable and I still had to pay for it. Maintenance will almost never come if you live in the apartments on campus, and they are next to a dairy farm, so the smell outside might get to you. As a whole, Southern for their academics is great. If you can live somewhere else and still take the classes, you will have a great time.

Jaci

A great place to learn. Professors are dedicated to your success, but you have to do your part by studying and participating in class. The campus has its own police force and they have an app so that you can reach them at any time and they can pinpoint your location if you are in trouble. Food is typical Louisiana cuisine but it really good.

Deone

Southern University is a great place for those who's seeking a fully diverse university, while also living and enjoying the campus life. Southern has a great variety of majors to choose from including engineering, law and nursing programs. It is known to be one of the largest HBCU schools in the US with campuses in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I encourage everyone to make a choice for themselves. A four-year institution, junior college, community college, or technical school is not for everyone. Some people succeed in all and others fall short. Choose a university for you not because, your friends are going there, or the school is not far from home. But, choose with your heart and your mind. Examine all your options and be willing to stick with it. College is the experience of a lifetime. Before college you're planning your life. During college you're living it. After college you're putting all your plans into motion. Choose a school where you can grow socially and academically. That's what life is truly about...progression.

Thankfully, I received my financial aid, and I never had a problem with maintaining my grades after that incident.

I was a student at another 4 year university before I started at Southern University. I can say that Southern has more of a "college feel". There isn't a dull moment on campus and there is always something to do. Unlike the college that I attended before, Southern University feels more like home. It's not often that you find a school that not only supplies you with the educational needs, but also it supplies you with love and support on and off campus.
