Go visit the university and sit in on a class

I picked the school I wanted to go to based on location, campus and the general feeling i got from the place. I was undecided so obviously my major didn't come into play at all, but I can't imagine going to another school. Southwestern didn't end up having much in the way of what I needed (careerwise) because I chose a career in film which Southwestern didn't have. However, I learned plenty there that will stick with me forever and I learned it both in and out of the classroom. Also, work internships in college. There is nothing worse than getting an application for the company I work with now and the kid just graduated from college and hasn't worked a day in his or her life. Employers don't want you unless you have been proven in a professional environment (and on-campus jobs just don't do the trick).

The best way to find the best fit is to visit the campuses and speak to not only faculty/staff, but current students as well. That's the only way to find the right one. To make the most of your college experience is completely in your hands. As you make your adjustment from familiarity and home-life to the big switch of college, you're an adult; your decisions are your decisions. There is no one to hold your hand, wake you up for the bus, remind you to do your homework, nothing. It's completely up to you. The best way to make it the best experience is to try. Try new things, try different things, try scary things, adventurous things, any things. Try it all. You'll be surprised at what you discover about yourself just by giving a little effort.

Ranking does not mater when it comes to living the college experiance. Make sure when you visit the school you feel comfortable to be yourself.

To find the right college. I suggest you research it indepthly, then visit it. If it feels right then go for it. When you go to college, make friends with the people living around you and see if they will walk around campus with you to get oriented, before classes start so that you know where all your classes are before the first day. Talk to people in your classes so that you will have someone that you can study with. Join a few groups that are interesting but don't feel obligated to stay with them, they will understand that you are trying to find your place.

Visit all the campuses that you are genuinely interested in attending. Maybe let your child spend a weekend with a current student on campus to get the best feel for the school. Also, check into how strong the school's programs are that you are interested in. Make sure that they have a major you're interested in as well as on and off-campus activies. There are so many things to look into when choosing a college. Decide if you would rather go to school in a large city where there is constantly something to do or a more reserved town. If you are very interested in sports, look into how successful the school's athletic teams are. At larger schools most student support is given to football and basketball teams. Also look into the greek life on campus. Greek life not only offers parties, but they also contribute to different philanthropies to help the community. Most importantly to the parents- Let your child choose where they would like to attend college. Financial aid is always an option. The last thing your child wants to do is regret what could be the best years of their life.
