Stark State College Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Susan

If I could go back and talk to my younger self I would tell myself to not wait so long to decide to go to college. College is a fun learning environment and helps to make one a well rounded person, ready to tackle any problems life hands one. Be excited about learning new ideas and concepts, be open to new experiences, join groups and get to know a lot of different people. Mostly I would tell myself to live and experience new things whenever possible. College will open many doors for you in your future.

I would give the following advice: 1.When you go to college don’t forget your heritage and the ones who got you there; a grateful attitude will breed a generous person. 2.Good postsecondary education transforms a broad horizon of opportunities into a focused, passionate dream! Chase that dream. 3.Try to do well every task that is given to you; those that you dislike will cultivate discipline; those that you enjoy will inspire you forward. 4.Work ethic can allow you to minimize debt, and debt can make people into slaves. I’d rather be sweating and free! 5.Be a good steward of time so that it doesn’t get wasted. 6.Planning and executing is essential, but people are more significant. Don't walk all over others to get where you're going; respect them and they'll respect you.

Study, and pay attention. College is no where near what the high school teachers described, and you are in for a rude awakening. Save up money, and set goals to get ready for school. College is not a requirement to move on with life, and when you go, you are paying out of your own pocket to learn, so school may cost money, but ignorance is more costly in the end. Be serious about going, and don't slack off. If you are going to go to school make sure you are mentally prepared, don't go just because everyone tells you to, it is your personal decision, you have to live with either the career or the debt if you decide you don't like it. Being in college means responsibility, you're going to have to work but you have to find a balance to study too. Buckle up Buttecup, colllege isn't a walk in the park like highschool, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

College is not cheap dude, and Guys' is not going to be enough to pay for it. You need to get a job where you can get a constant in-flow of money. Guys' is only giving you an average 100$ a week. Do you think that is going to be enough to pay for college? Cause it's not. And don't even think about relying on scholarships, cause the way it is, you haven't won one single one. You gotta grow up dude. The world doesn't stop for you to ask questions. You gotta put yourself in drive and follow the speed limit. Don't go faster, then you'll run into obsticles you could have avoided. Trust me on everything, if you can't trust your future self, than who can you really trust? So like I said, get another job. Try and quit Guys'. Cause you and I both know you need the money.

I would tell myself to pay attention in class and learn as much as you can while you can.

If I could go back in time, I would simply tell myself to breathe. The thought of college was a scary one for me- enough so that I held it off for three years after I graduated. I didn't know what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go, or if I would even have the motivation to succeed, because I had slacked off so very much the last year of highscool, and I felt that college would be no different. I would tell myself that college IS different, and that I would enjoy it much more than I was enjoying highshool. My college experience has been so much better than my highschool experience. Just knowing that I have a choice to come to school or not- and that I always do choose to go- is a big step up from the attitude I had in highschool. I am educating myself in a field that fascinates and intrigues me, and that makes me excited for the future and things to come. If I could speak to my highschool self, I would be able to lift a weight off of her shoulders.

Go to college as soon a you get out of high school. It gets a lot harder once you have been out of school for a period of time. It is also alot more challenging if you start your own family and then decide to go to college, because you have the problem of finding day care and if you work, you have to work around both schedules. If you go right out of high school, a lot of the information is still in your mind, and you have the knowledge to keep it going and not get side tracked with other things in life.

IF I COULD GO BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL I WOULD TELL MYSELF TO ENJOY HIGH SCHOOL MORE. I WOULD ENCOURAGE MYSELF TO JOIN SOME MORE CLUBS, TO GET MORE INVOLVED WITH THE SCHOOL, AND TO APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS. I WOULD ALWAYS TELL MYSELF TO NOT PUT SO MUCH PRESSURE ON DECISIONS WITH COLLEGE, THAT THE RIGHT DECISION WILL COME TO YOU. i WOULD REMIND MYSELF TO WORK AND STUDY HARD IN HIGH SCHOOL, BECAUSE COLLEGE WILL ONLY BE HARDER, BUT TO REMEMBER THAT ALL THIS HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION WILL PAY OFF WHEN YOU BECOME A VET. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT I WOULD TELL MYSELF, IS TO ENJOY SENIOR YEAR, BECAUSE YOU WILL NEVER GET A YEAR LIKE THAT EVER AGAIN, GRADUATING IS ONE OF THE BEST MOMENTS YOU WILL EVER FEEL IN YOUR LIFE. AT LEAST AT THAT POINT IN YOUR LIFE.

Stop doubting youself, you will be fine. When you finally push yourself into enrolling at Stark State you are going to be very nervous and with all honesty you will not do very well on the entrance exam. Of course, the poor score will make worry even more and you will wonder if you are making a mistake; it is not a mistake. But it should be kept in mind that the first semester is going to be one of the crazy things in your life. In addition to this, you will spend a great deal of time in the admissions office asking a rather large amount of questions about everything around campus. Again, do not worry, all of your instructors are going to be very easy to work with. By the end of your first semester you will feel very accomplished with three As and one B(you had to much fun in class). The next semester you will be inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, and your mom is going to cry. Finally, live in the now, enjoy the class your in and don't worry about the class ahead.

Don't mess around with the Compass test within the year, but still maintain those goals of getting your Bachelor's Degree. You will already know how the world is an eye opener with going to Japan for several weeks. The semester classes and the double block may seem boring but they are more college ready than any other school. You can leave right after a test has been given, and don't let your senior get you down. You will make plenty of new friends and trade books quite a bit. Please save up for your books they are almost as expensive as your tuition.

I would tell myself to go with my first instinct. After I graduated I entered into a major that I thought would "always have jobs available". After completing a 2 year degree in medical office administration I realized that I did not like working in that field and my college education did not prove to be worth it with the pay rate I received. If I would have went with my first passion and instinct I would have went with Early Childhood Education. Now I am back in college pursuing my original choice with a student loan debt that is increasing! If I knew what I know now, I would have started with what I was passionate about instead of what "will always have jobs". Life isn't about how much money you make, it is about making a difference in the lives of others and using your talents. I have a talent to work with children and I want to teach preschoolers the fundamentals of life. Always go with passion and instinct!

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would advice myself to be more confident. I would explain that having confidence in myself is key to college life and preparation. As well as encouraging myself to go ahead and apply to a variety of different colleges because at worst they could just say no.

Aurora

As a high school senior, I thought that the sky was the limit. I applied to dozens of art schools, many very costly, and got accepted into several. When graduation rolled around though, I realized that I had spent all of my time dreaming about what school I was going to go to, and what my dorm would look like, and I had not thought about how I was going to pay for it. My parents had made it clear that they would not be able to help me financially, and I guess that i had just expected financial aid to fall into my lap. When I did not recieve the big scholarship that I was banking on, I had to come down to earth. Although I did get accepted, I was not able to attend the school of my choice because I did not put as much time as I could have into seeking financial aid. The help is out there, if you put the effort into finding it.

Jerrell

I would give advice to start right after graduation and not wait around a couple of years and then go.

Tierra

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to make friends sooner. Being shy can make one miss out on a lot of experiences. Having friends can help with school work and understanding the material incase one doesn't understand the instructor completely.

Samantha

I would have told myself that high school grades really do matter in college, and the better your gpa is in high school the easier it is to succeed in college. I would have also told myself to save my money because once the program starts it is very difficult to have a job.

Stephanie

I would tell myself to save more money because college is expensive. I would make myself get up and go to class everyday, instead of sleeping in. I would tell myself to turn in every assignment because you never know which ones the teachers are going to bring back later as an example. I would tell myself that I can do it, and not to give up or break down at finals time.
