What is your overall opinion of this school?

New Paltz is a gorgeous town in a beautiful area; the college medium-sized and classes range from maybe 15-100 students, depending if it's a lecture course (think General Chemistry I or Calculus I) or a upper-division literature course (there are about 30 people in my Epic Tradition course). The Honors Program is really fun and offers a lot of support and opportunities. The campus food has gotten better since my freshman year, but there's a lot to be improved upon price-wise and quality-wise. One can get very involved in student life (academic clubs, recreational sports, etc.) but the Student Association is stingy with budgeting for such programs. On-campus housing is all right -- the parking situation needs to be fixed. (I came home to a parking lot that wasn't plowed out and actually got stuck in a parking spot). The professors, generally, are top-notch--I can personally vouch for both the geology department (as I used to be a geology major), which is entirely made up of PhD holders, and the English department, as I have never had a single complaint about any of the professors I have had. Most professors on this campus genuinely care about their students and do almost everything in their power to help them succeed. If a student shows they care and that they're trying, the professors DO notice and WILL help you.

The school provides a warm atmosphere for anyone to be themselves. New Paltz is a very accepting community and people are very kind. Faculty and staff at New Paltz are very helpful for the most part and will help you if they can. Overall, the school has been a great choice for me and I am currently a junior. Definitely one of the best decisions I've made as a young adult.

It started out as my college, and now it's my home. I graduated with a BA and came back for grad school. The student community has tons of options and something for everyone. The classes are fun and engaging with lots of opportunity for discussion among students and professors. I highly recommend it.

The school brought me into diversity, I am from the Bronx and it is no where near home. That's what I love most about it. Coming here I gained the opportunity to gain knowledge on academics, politics, and diversity. This is my reason for coming here and to be able to receive what I pay for, is beyond worth the experience.

I really like my school. You have to work hard to rise up in your major and to get internships provided by your professors. There are more connections than you know. exist. Dorms are okay if you are in a renovated one otherwise they are extremely hot in the summer. The food is awful but you can switch your meal plan sophomore year!

Campus is fairly small but people here are really friendly, there is always someone to say hi to. Many things off campus are walking distance, like Tops, places to eat and bars. If you have a car or your friend does make a trip up to the mountains the hike is not to hard and the view is amazing!!

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

An interesting collection of passionate and crazy students/educators trying to learn and teach together, while respecting and welcoming each other.

Describe the students at your school.

My classes were a mix of serious students, people there for the credits/good grade and people going for nap time.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

To myself years ago, You are about to experience an amazing place. Do not be scared or nervous at all. You are going to push yourself through academics and sports while making life-long friends. This is an entirely new place with new people; let the things that happened in high school go. That is the past and we can now make a new future. While you are here do not take things for granted. Sitting here four years later makes me miss those tough freshman introductions and late nights with multiple papers. It goes so much faster than you think it will. Go through everything with wide open eyes and an open heart. This is will the start of your adult life and it is going to be a really fun time. Take your studies seriously but also have fun with the people around you. Also, try to branch out a little more passed your comfort zone. Meet more people and talk to more of your classmates. I may have missed some amazing people during my time at New Paltz and if I could do it again I would try to befriend more people. Have fun love. Best, Emily

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I would give myself is to relax and stop worrying. I was never the shy type, but coming to college was my first real experience of being away from home. I would also want to tell myself that every little problem that arises is not the end of the world no matter how much it might feel like that is the case every time sonthing goes wrong. It's alright to be nervous or afraid, but it is not alright to let negative emotions like those prevent you from doing things.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Honestly? I wish I had known how poorly maintained the walkways are during the winter. They create a very harsh and dangerous physical environment during the snow and ice that comes with the colder weather and walking around makes me nervous. I also wish I had known about how bad their food was. There is only one main dining hall and the required meal plan for freshman only allow you to eat there. The food is less than desireable, though luckily they do alway have a vegetarian option which I greatly appreciate.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

When I brag about my school I always bring up how beautiful it is up here in New Paltz. There is nothing better than getting to walk outside everyday in the fall and breathing in that crisp mountain air. The, for lack of a better word, vibe is perfect. This sucha relaed atmostphere and everyone here is so "artsy" and creative. Its such fantastic thing to be a part of. I'm constantly surrounded by talent and beauty and I'm very lucky that I go to school in such a lax environment.
