Stephen F Austin State University Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Sarah

Make sure you know how far you live from campus and how you're going to get there. Biking 2 miles seems like a breeze but in Texas heat, it is far from it. Biking to class should only be an option if you live closer to campus.

Chelsea

I wish i would of known about the weather and how much it is different from Houston. I packed for a cold winter but at times it was colder than what i would have exprected. Also i wish i would have known how involved our campus was in school activities and organizations. I had seen alot going on at freshman oreintation but i hadn't taken the time to see what was being offered at our school.

I wish that I had known just how much activity the campus had. When I toured the school, there was very little talk about on-campus activities, and I almost didn't attend Stephen F Austin because I wanted a more lively campus. However, now that I am a student, there is almost always an activity going on, even during the middle of the semester when things usually die down.

It's going to be overwhelming at first, but everyone will get adjusted, make new friends, learn so much in a lifetime, and become a SFA Lumberjack! The best thing is to be optimistic to a new environment and the best will come to you. I believe that anyone that wants to go to college should try to apply here and see what I get to see in the fall. i see plenty of people that care how the individuals turn out. You feel like a special individual not just a number.

Stephanie

I wish I had known how hard it was going to be to leave home better. Everyone gets maybe just the smallest butterflies but everyone gets them when going off to college or the moment of the parents going back home after you're moved in. I thought I was ready and be more than ready to be on my own here when my parents went home but I wasn't as ready as I thought. So overall I wish I had just known myself a little better and more ready to go out and meet new people.

Johnathan

I wish I had known about the second cafeteria by the time I had gotten to SFA. Also I had wanted to know where all the part-time jobs were.

Heather

I wish I had known more about what I truly wanted to do career-wise. After receiving one degree and starting another, I have finally decided what I would really like to do. However, it is extremely common for people to decide after they have been taking college courses for a period of time. I was pleased to find that there are many helpful people at Stephen F. Austin to help guide you in the right direction.

Krystal

I wish that someone would have explained to me the large difference in community college and a four year university. Previously I attended a community college and the classes weren?t much different than high school. Instructors took care of students individually, gave curves, and tailored the class to students. At Stephen F Austin I haven?t heard the word curve even mentioned. Instructors have helped me through the classes, but their expectations are much higher.

I wish I would've known how to study for college. My studying skills are totally different compared to how I studied in high school. I also wished I knew what kind of good organization this wonderful college has to offered. I would've joined one at the beginning of the school year. I wish I had known that I would've persuade all my friends from high school to attend Stephen F. Austin. The school seems so much like home and that I really didn't expect. I wish I would know about all the sorotity the school has.

Chelsea

I came to college as an interior design/art education double major, and I wish that I had known that interior design wasn't what I wanted to do as a career. As a result, I lost fifteen hours that could have been devoted to art education., which has also kept me from being able to take electives since those Human Sciences classes now count as electives.

Shelby

This school offers alot of fun things to do, but be sure to check into the more wholesome ones or you will soon be going down a slipperly slope.

I wish i had learned to study in high school. It would have made college so much easier.

Jessica

I wish I would've been a little bit more organized with time, and learned how to manage my time better. I think it's mostly due to being alone for the first time, and not having someone tell me when to do things and when not to do things.

How long it would take to adapt to the small town

Angela

I wish I had known how small the town is.

I wish I knew how good the Communication Department was before I came here so I wouldn't have wasted a year trying to figure out what major to decide on.

Doug

How small the town is

Robin

Nothing really. We found out everything we needed to know at orientation. The hardest thing for me was finding all my classes for that first time. So I guess what I really needed to know was just to know how to get around campus better.

The only things I wish I would have known before going to SFA was how the small town compares to the big city I'm from and how homesick I was going to be. However, in my case, I believe I would have be homesick no matter where I ended up going to school and the small town just contributed to my homesickness more. Now that I've been home, I loooove the small town and all the close friends I have been able to make and get to know so well, and I can't wait to go back!!
