Im going to summarize my initial experience and then my overall experience after being here for two years. I was originally a transfer student to Stony Brook. The school was extremely abusive to me for my arrival. It began with orientation. Everyone student gets a orientation date in the summer. Freshmen get there dates first then transfer students. As such my orientation date was mid to late july. At orientation this is where you would make your class schedule. Being current students and now freshmen have made their schedules practically every class I needed was already closed. So my first semester was a waste of classes. I had a feeling this would happen in the beginning of the summer so I asked to have my orientation date moved. When I asked if they could move my date up the person laughed at me and said how about I can move it back for you if you cant make it. After orientation, the dorming situation is what also killed me. Being I was again still a transfer student if you want to dorm on campus transfer students dont get priority for housing. I lived almost an hour away without traffic. The school in long short would not give me housing and my first semester at Stony Brook I had to rent off-campus. My landlord ended up suing me but thats a different story. The school told me to get on the waitlist, there was 3000 people ahead of me? My second semester, I got lucky and was able to get into the newly completed dorm. I got in there because people who wanted to move in did not go through the same pathways you would for other dorms, so I was able to skip the waitlist and the bureaucracy. Once I had dorming and was able to make an actual schedule that would fit me I started to like Stony Brook. There are alot of nice people. Overall I would say about 60% of the students here are pre-med and a huge amount of students at Stony Brook University are international students from Asia. Now to summarize my overall opinion of Stony Brook after being here for two years. I'm satisfied with Stony Brook, it's not a bad school. The education is overall pretty good depending on the subject. Classes can be very huge though. It is not uncommon to be in a 500 person double floor lecture hall where every seat is filled for intro sciences. Do not take any class lightly overall most intro classes are considered "weed-out" classes. The classes are designed to be very difficult and graded not fairly. This is intended to discourage students who are not serious. Once you get passed this the upper level classes aren't that bad. The school overall is not a bad place to study and get a degree from, but I wouldnt have come here if i could have done it again. The school is too international for me. It is extremely common to here chinese or korean as you walk around and many students are not fluent in english. Not sure truly why they are here studying. The professors dont care about the students overall and wont help you. If you are not an international student you are a New York Resident, primarily from long island. So if you are out of state, like california, you may be uncomfortable. There was one point I was alittle late on paying my tuition, the school alerted me that they sent my balance to a private debt collector. Keep in mind, I paid over half what was due and it was only 45 days after. So you can make the decision if you want to come to Stony Brook. It is a very challenging school with a decent reputation. You can of course be happy here, but this has been just my experiences.

I transferred to Stony brook because of the vast opportunities give on Campus. I’m involved in a few clubs and have an internship on campus. The food definitely needs to improve and school spirit. I’m trying to make the best of my time here at Stony Brook and if you willing to look, you will find many activities of your interest.

A beautiful campus, encouraging faculty, copious extracurriculars, and challenging classes all combine to create a well-rounded, and affordable college experience. The campus is clean and safe. There are multiple and varied meal options of decent quality available.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

The teachers I've had were all very passionate about their respective topics. It's really easy to talk to the professors too; most are willing to stay after class if you have questions or concerns to want to discuss. The dorms are a hit or a miss, but overall are pretty good. There are a lot of people at this school, so it might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but if you go to clubs you can meet people in a smaller setting and make great friends!

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Stony Brook is definitely the place to come if you are a serious science student who wants minimal distractions and is willing to work extremely hard in order to be at the top of your class; this will not come easily. However, there are also plenty of groups to join and activities in which to participate on campus. The overall culture of the school is a bit detached, as everyone is busy studying, but there is also some fun to be had.

Stony Brook is an exceptional University for STEM majors but, as a business student, there isn't much focus on business at Stony Brook. I would recommend anyone in science or math related fields to enroll but for business students, I would recommend a school which is better known for business.

Academics is competitive all year round. Professors are really helpful and want you to succeed. Class size may be intimating but it gets smaller as you get more into your major.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Stony is honestly a great school. This school has some world-class professors who almost always make time to work with students outside of class. The dorms are pretty good, and cooking dorms are available which is pretty sweet. The food services aren't anything special but they're still good with a variety of food options, including for special dietary restrictions. The people tend to be more standoff-ish, but if you join at least one club you'll make friends in no time. Go Seawolves!

What is your overall opinion of this school?

It is a good school for medical, pre-health, engineering, and math students. Many classes are made extremely difficult with professors that do not teach very well. It is a very big research school so this is understandable, but teachers should show some more concern for their students rather than making the exams extremely inconsistent with what is taught. The social scene is what you make of it and join clubs helps and parties help with that.

Easy to get lost in if you're a new student. Once settled in, the school is actually rather nice. As for classes, it's best to be prepared to print a lot of material/notes/powerpoints provided on lectures beforehand. Note to newcomers: t's important to check Blackboard and emails DAILY for announcements and/or clarifications.
