In regards to the whole school its seen as a majority Asian, which does in fact make kids feel like they need to be really smart. It also gives people the impression that there aren't a lot of parties because its a science school. The students themselves are only stereo-typical based on which Quad you live in. For example, people commonly believe that students who live in Tabler use a lot of drugs because we're the Arts Quad.
The only real stereotype I've heard was that Stony students are all stoners. That since there's nothing around, everyone gets bored and does drugs.
asian invasion, "stoner brook", some of the smartest students in the Northeast.
People believe that most of the students that go to this school are rich. They also believe that Stonybrook is an expensive school and not worth it. Some others believe that in the area outside of Stonybrook, there is nothing to do.
People think everyone is from Long Island.
We tend to be a little quite on weekends.
everyone is studious and doesnt have a social life
I have heard a lot of students complaining about campus services/activity/policies etc.
The large number of commuter students contributes to a lack of close-knit campus community. In addition, the largest percentage of students on campus is comprised of international Asian students (their aloofness and un-acculturated nature contributing yet again to a lack of campus community). Thirdly, there is a feeble social scene and few, if any, weekend activities - making life for those of us living on campus slow-moving, at best.
There isn't really a typical Stony Brook student. There's a lot of diversity - in ethnicity, intelligence, and work ethic.
Stony Brook students are usually considered very smart, and very studious. I'm always proud to brag about what school I go to because I love to see people's reaction. It never gets old when people say 'that's a really good school'. But they also think it's a minority school, and always make jokes about it.
They're all foreign.
It's full of Asians! You can't walk around the campus for 20 seconds without running into one. Weekends are absolutely dead. Can get depressing at times. The campus looked like a prison, parts of it still does, but has greatly improved the past 3 years. Academically, it is reaching beyond and has a fast progressing. It's a good experience overall.
Professors are there just for research and could care less about the students. The campus is no fun for students, no parties. All foreigners.
Stereotypes consist mostly about the overwhelmingly large Asian student population. The Asian community can make someone who doesn't speak an Asian language feel like they are living on another continent. Stereotypically only non-English speaking people stay on campus over the weekends.
A ton of asians, teachers you can't understand, and huge classes.
They're all Asian.
That as a white person I would be the minority. That Stony Brook was Asian centeral.
I DON'T HAVE ANY. BEING A MATURE A/K/A OVER 30 YEAR OLD STUDENT, I THINK THAT EVERYONE AT STONYBROOK, INCLUDING PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS, ARE THE MOST OPEN MINDED, COURTEOUS AND CARING PEOPLE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. I LOVE STONY BROOK, THE STUDENTS AND STAFF, THE ATMOSPHERE, THE LEARNING. IF THERE IS A HEAVEN AFTER EARTH, I IMAGINE IT AS STONYBROOK.
its boring and the students are dorks
Stony Brook professors= Nerds, some nice, some not that nice... science classes can be challenging! Stony Brook Students= Smart, fun, competitive...
Stony Brook students are, for the most part, not much fun and everyone goes home on the weekends. Most Stony Brook students do not speak English well.
Stereotypes about SBU - There's nothing to do on campus, mostly a commuter school, About SBU students - That they all cluster into groups (based on race) and are narrow-minded, people are unfriendly
Some people think that nothing ever happens at Stony Brook and that it is a "suitcase" school where everyone goes home every weekend. Also, others have also described it as a party school or one where everyone is a science major.
I wasn't aware of any before attending, in fact I had never even been to Long Island. However, once I arrived and moved in, I quickly realized why Long Islanders have such a bad rep! Most of the student body was composed of them.
I'm not sure about general stereotypes we are very diverse.
The majority of Stony Brook students are known to be Pre-Med, especially the freshmen class.
Everyone is Asian, everyone commutes, it's the most boring school.
That Stony Brook is a commuter school. That every other person is from Asia.
Stony Brook is looked at as a party school with really smart students
Everyone is asian, and it is a boring. Everyone goes home on the weekend.
That the school is huge, the dorms and classrooms are over-crowded, the buildings are old. On the plus side, the school has a good reputation, especially for the sciences.
They are mostly Asian, they go home on the weekends, they smoke a lot of marijuana
Black people are always discriminated, always they are accused of stealing stuff. Indians are always considered smart, but the reality is, a few aren't.
We are from Long Island and that we decided to attend Stony Brook either because we failed to make it into NYU.
That it's a huge party school and we drink/smoke too much
Some of the stereotypes that i have heard are that most of the student population is asian. Also some people have told me that there are a lot of drugs on campus, they only think this because of the way SBU used to be. Another is that some people think it is a commuter school and very few students stay on the weekends so they feel they will not geet the true college experience.
Everyone goes home on the weekends. Below average intelligence. Lots of really Fobby Asians.
- Stony Brook has an ugly campus. - Stony Brook is boring. - The food is not good. - Food is expensive.
A stereotype about Stony Brook is that Asians are a major population of the student body and that they all tend to "cling" to each other and don't really spread their wings and experience other races other than their own.
machines. competetive. commuters. all bizness
very diverse school, lots Chinese and Indians! the whites are the minorities at this school
-Stony Brook is filled with Asian students -Stony Brook is a good school -Stony Brook is in the middle of nowhere -Stony Brook is dead on the weekends.
that stony brook students are very smart and the stony brook is predominantly asian. stony brook is comprised mostly of commuters furthermore creating a dead campus on weekends
One stereotype about Stony Brook students are that we are all unhappy with Stony Brook campus and see it as a terrible place to dorm.
That we are mostly asians and that nobody stays for the weekend.
It has alot of Asian students
Stony is a party school
Probably the most common stereotype about Stony Brook is that a large percentage of students leave on the weekends. Many say that Stonybrook is largely a "commuter school." I would also say that many feel Stony Brook students are "unhappy" here.
Stony Brook is a commuter campus, students have no school spirit. Administration is inefficient and professors don't care about their students.
