Katrina

I stumbled across Strayer University-Delaware Campus back in March of 2014 when my husband and I were commuting back and forth to Christiana Hospital. I was pregnant with our first child and my pregnancy was considered high risk; we traveled 2 1/2 hours three days a week, to Christiana, for Maternal Fetal studies. After two weeks of studies, our son was delivered via emergency cesarean. We spent one month and three days with our son in the Christiana Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) until his passing. Every day we passed the Strayer University - Delaware Campus from the Ronald McDonald House to the hospital and back. I used to wonder what type of university Strayer was. See, living in Delaware I was only familiar with local colleges such as Delaware Technical and Community College, Wilmington University, Wesley College, Delaware State University, University of Delaware, and Widner University. About a year after our son passed, I was running a failing home care agency and my husband and I were in a lot of debt. At the time, I was a Licensed Practical Nurse of 11 years. I had graduated from Delaware Technical and Community College with a diploma in Practical Nursing Studies in 2003, and from 2010 to 2011, I took some classes toward an RN-BSN until contracting Tuberculosis Meningitis (TB Meningitis). After my TB Meningitis diagnosis, I had to put furthering my education on hold. Then life happened; I fell in love, got married in 2013, and shortly after getting married became pregnant. Life handed me lemons again with the passing of our son in 2014 and a failing business a year after. I asked myself, "What am I going to do?" I was losing sleep and my heart was weighted down with grief and stress. Shortly after learning the ill fate of my business, I was watching the Steve Harvey Show. During a commercial break, a Strayer University commercial came on and Steve Harvey was talking to a classroom full of students in the commercial. I became inspired! I immediately went online and started researching Strayer University. I learned the university was formed in 1892 under the name Strayer Business College and was granted university status in 1998. I was astounded that is was a Maryland East Coast based college. It is an accredited college with 78 campuses offering a traditional classroom and an online education. I wanted to major in Health Care Management. I researched my former two colleges, other colleges in my state, and other out of state colleges that had online programs. Guess what? Only Strayer University had the program I was looking for. After two months of research, Emma Bos who is one of the enrollment specialists, at Strayer, worked closely with me to obtain transcripts and funding to further my education in Business Administration with a concentration in Health Services Administration. Even though Emma dealt with many other students, she made me feel like I was the only student she was helping. That made me feel like a VIP; so I know anyone that Emma helps is receiving the same type of one on one superb service. I just recently wrapped up my third semester at Strayer, and I have had a 4.0 GPA for the last three semesters. I am currently in the honors program, made the President's List for scholarly achievement, and have been invited to join two honor societies. The instructors at Strayer are invested in the students and want the students to succeed. The courses are well designed to encourage students to apply themselves. I can not forget the Success Coaches who help guide students each step of the way and provide encouragement and advise on what courses to take. I haven't come across any peers that act out of character either. I am happy I chose Strayer Univerity, and I'm excited about the many career opportunities post obtaining my BBA - HSA.
