Stereotypes at this school can be as accurate as you want them to be. UAlbany is really what you make of it. If you want to fit into the stereotypes then you can. But there are also plenty of opportunities to make UAlbany your own unique place.
It's true but it's also changing. SUNY Albany admits 1/3 fewer applicants percentage wise than it did 20 years. It has the same selectivity as UC Davis and it's ranked #7 among publics. A complete lack of funding for athletics is mostly to blame for the complete lack of name recognition but it's changing. This is true SUNY wide. Expect the acceptance rate to only get harder in years to come.
To a degree finances are a consideration but it's not the only factor. The fact is UAlbany has 14 programs ranked in the top 25. It has the world's best Nano College. Low cost is important but it's not the only reason. Solid programs are important.
On an average week I'll go out anywhere from 2-4 times, mostly bars. Happy hour is usually packed, mostly because there's no cover and cheap specials. But the bars close around 2am (and buses back to campus stop then, too) so that's when things die down. Also, the majority of the bar-goers appear to be freshmen and sophomores - what do upper-classmen do for fun?!
yes
N/A
From my experiences the stereotypes are accurate, but not necessarily bad. Yes, there is a large number of beer hungry students who do not go to class, but on the other hand way more of those beer hungry students do go to class and have a genuine desire to learn. Albany is the type of place where it takes a while to find your niche, but once you have found it, you forget about the stereotypical Albany student. The dorms are miserable. There is no getting around this fact. Moving off campus was the best decision I made and completely transformed my experience at UAlbany.
GOOD
No because the stereotypes presuppose that when the students are done partying they actually get some work done. In reality the school is nothing more than a scam to get us a piece of paper that will increase our earning potential. The teachers are lazy and aren't interested in students concerns. The students are disconnected from the subjects they are studying and everyone is masking their depression in a sea of addictions...
Who knows for sure. Google search: Alcohol and Social Norms
- no, plenty of people 'party' but no more than any other school -no, but alot of people are, about 1/3 -no, but a lot of people are, about 1/2
Yes and no. UAlbany kids pride themselves on our esteemed party school title, but that isn't to say academics don't play a big role. While we love to party on the weekends and the week as well, it is also clear that school comes first. Greek life is here, but it doesn't hold much status other then during rush and Greek week.
