Overall, I enjoyed my time at Binghamton. For the most part, I felt like my professors and TA’s were available and accessible. After getting past introductory level lectures, my classes were relatively small and I was able to form some good connections with both professors and peers. There are plenty of activities to get involved in, and I met some great people. One downside is that sometimes it feels like university administration does not do enough to address important student issues; but the campus community is very vocal about advocating for issues that are important to them. The dining hall food was definitely mediocre as well, but did improve a bit during my time there. As a vegan, it was difficult for me to find decent options for a while; but they’ve slowly gotten better. If you're looking for good food, you can always check out the Food Co-op, which is a student-run cafe that serves lunch every weekday. I lived on campus for all three years that I attended and had a pretty good experience. Some dorms are better than others, but I lived in the on-campus apartments (Susquehanna) for two years and really enjoyed it. We had a full kitchen and single rooms, and weren’t too far from any campus locations (if you don't mind walking a bit). Having the nature preserve right next to campus was probably one of my favorite things about Binghamton. It was a great place to go to relieve stress or hang out with friends. I would go there in my free time to search for fossils or view wildlife. Within a brief walk from the main campus, I was able to spot birds, beavers, salamanders, a porcupine, deer, frogs, snakes, and a fox. There are also plenty of interesting places to go off campus, including a variety of parks and nature preserves, restaurants, shops, a skating rink, and a weekly farmers market. I would recommend Binghamton to anyone considering, especially if you're planning to attend a SUNY school.

This is my opinion but poor ratings problem remote state school surrounded by zilch. No college town. A town with zilch but the school and sky high crime. Brain drain city. Universities should be places that you can trust. Don't trust this school and people who run it. If you are from a marginalized group and you end up being harmed, you will have no recourse. Others commented on this. Sociology may be the worst but I bet the others are as bad. This is a high risk school for many reasons. If you think crime low you are wrong. If you are hurt or worse on campus, forget getting help. And they keep a lot hush hush so nobody knows what happened. Even when a murderer was on the loose students were not informed. Students are not informed about dangers on campus. You think they file police reports on all the crimes? There is no report from when I was victimized so can't trust their crime stats.. You think NY State would be honest. forget that. Their PR is far from true about everything. Do not believe the crime stats reported on line or by the school. One chart says there was only 1 murder in 2018 but there were 2. If they can't get that number right you know other things are off too. I was victimized, reported what happened and no police report of that. Forget getting help or truthfulness by them. Look everything up yourself. Do not believe their dishonest PR. Sites reporting BU crime stats cover irrelevant Vestal crime stats. The social stuff and classes are in Binghamton where crime rise has been spectacular with rate is 798.2. This year Binghamton was rated 2nd only to Buffalo in terms of crime rates for NY cities. It is a dangerous place. It looks impossible cause it seems rural and peaceful. There is huge gang activity. The rates are also deceptive because the crime is focused primarily in the places students spend time with almost no crime in other areas. The crime stats in where students spend time are far higher than the totals suggest. It is unsafe and forget getting someone to help if something happens.

I believe that Binghamtkn js a pretty decent school depending on your major. The arts department could definitely use more attention but for business and STEM, the school has a lot of opportunities

Jasmine - 04/18/2023

There are a lot of positive's to attending Bing! I greatly enjoyed the course availability and the class sizes. The scenery is beautiful and they try to modernize as much as possible. There are a decent amount of student activities and clubs to get involved in! The weather can be a downside as can the lack of diversity.

SUNY at Binghamton FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at SUNY at Binghamton?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for SUNY at Binghamton is 40%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020 , _____ students were offered admission. The number of males who applied was _____ vs the number of females which was _____.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My college experience has let me come into my own. In high school I was an indecisive, shy girl. However, my time at college has made me outgoing, strong and independent. College has forced me to grow not onlyt as a student but as a person too. I have been able to take control of my life and live the way I want. The seperation from the norms of home put me out of my comfort zone yet has made me flourish. As a high school student I never would have dreamed that I would have the confidence to study abroad in the upcoming semester nor would I have believed I would be double majoring. Overall my college experience did not change me, but it let me develop. I honestly do not think the most important part of the college experience is the classes, it is the experiences you have, the people you meet and the memories you will have. I will carry college with me forever because I know it has made me who I am today. I am excited to see where the next year and a half of college will take me!

  4. What are the academics like at your school?

Class sizes at Binghamton are very small. Even for Freshman classes they usually adverage between 20-40 students. Unless you take big lectures, you are likely to be in small discussion classes which means that your teacher will know you name and get to know you personally. The students that go here are hard workers and the class averages are generally high, so don't count on curves. Being a Human Development major I'm in a major that's is greatly changing. The HDEV classes are small and requirements are changing so definitely keep ontop of what your major requirements are.

  6. What is your overall opinion of this school?

The school is very large, but it has good major programs and the class sizes are small. On the flip side of this, since classes are small signing up for the classes you want to take can be a problem. Look forward to taking some early/boring classes the first semester or two. The school has a good reputation with people though, and employers supposedly want to hire students from public colleges because they are well rounded individuals. The dorms are fairly comfortable, and the city surrounding the college has plenty of shopping and entertainment opportunities.

Going to Binghamton is like going to an Ivy League except it is affordable and the atmosphere isn't as intense. Students here are just as intelligent and hard working but much more down to earth. 14. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I had really believed that it was okay to not have a major coming in as a new student. I pressured myself a lot to come up with a major because I thought that would make me more successful, when really I chose the wrong major and became unseccessful. If new students just register for courses that interest them, their interests will spark and an idea for a major will eventually come along without the pressure of forcing yourself into one.
