SUNY at Purchase College Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Matt

Yes! Purchase is typically known as an arts school, but it's much more than that. If you are someone who's primary interest is studying Literature for example, and also love acting in many school productions, then Purchase is a perfect fit for you. Here at Purchase, students are really zoned in their primary interest of study, but also love pursuing other interests (such as the arts). In my mind that's what it means to be an "arts school". It's that students do so much more than what's required!

Genearlly I think these stereotypes are accurate, but in healthy quanities: we're definitely not JUST an art school. Certainly that helped draw me to the school because I'm both liberal and creative, but I think overall it's the perfect "habitat" for people; our students are bright, interesting, eclectic, and fun. If I didn't think that was true, I wouldn't go do to school here.

I think for the most part they are - the campus is very diverse and pretty liberal. But I think it lends itself to attracting a lot of different people whom one might not normally come into contact with in their everyday lives.

In some cases, students here are really artsy. Our conservatories are awesome, so we bring in a lot of talented artists (both visual and performing arts). But we have really good Liberal Arts programs, too (history, biology, economics, etc.) that attract people who aren't as interested in the arts. The best part about the school is that you can take challenging courses while being surrounded by art constantly, regardless of your major. Purchase is definitely diverse! Our school attracts so many different people from so many different places, so you can constantly meet people from other cultural backgrounds.

While we do love to fight injustice, we aren't a bunch of "hippie". The student body is composed of people who stand up for what they believe in.

1. Purchase students are crazy- but not in a bad way. Purchase students are fun, crazy, exciting, creative, and have open minds. If that's crazy then I want everone to be crazy! 2. All students at Purchase ARE NOT ARTISTS. While we do have conservatories we also have majors in the social science department, and natural science department, humanities department. 3. Purchase is NCAA Division 3, Skyline Conference. We have sports like soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, softball, baseball, swimming, fencing, yoga, basketball, track, weightlifting, rock climbing, and much more!
