I feel the academics is very hands on and beneficial. The professors are accommodating and passionate. The main campus location and student housing is not very secure. The initial entry process is difficult and lacks much needed guidance and the scheduling is very inflexible. The administration helps each student with professionalism and courtesy.

Overall my opinion of SUNY ESF is that it's an amazing school. ESF was once the Forestry Department of Syracuse University, but eventually broke off to give lower income students a chance to study the world of environmental sciences. To this day we still share the campus with Syracuse University. As a result, students at ESF get the best of both worlds, meaning that we are able to be a part of a classic college experience with the huge games (lots of team spirit; go cuse!), and all sorts of extracurricular opportunities- yet we also get to enjoy a smaller community at ESF (only around 2,000 students) where we get an excellent academic experience due to the smaller student to teacher ratio. It is amazing to see teachers walk past their students and know each of their individual names and lives. You don't tend to get a relationship like that with your teachers at a much larger school. Not to mention everything is hands on learning here at ESF, so you are sure to get the best academic experience possible, with lots of different campuses and labs all over upstate New York. AND ALSO! ESF has the number one graduate rate of female engineers!

I recently, along with many of my friends, have transferred out of SUNY ESF. I went from being an honor roll student in high school to practically failing everything at SUNY ESF. I have since transferred into Stockton Univeristy and am back on honor roll once again. I had a terrible experience at this school. My schedule was difficult to keep up with and the classes move through information very quickly. I don’t remember anything I’ve learned from that school despite how many hours I poured into it. It is much more enriching to take the time to learn something meaningful than to move through as much material as possible in such a short amount of time.

Amazing people and full of those who want to help and support you or even just strike up a conversation about the environment or science in general. The bus trip I participated in to visit the college before I started attending was very life changing and made me feel like this college was perfect for me.

    SUNY ESF is undoubtedly the best environmentally focused school in the northeast where the classes and teachers encourage students to excel in a career-related field immediately after graduation.

  4. What's unique about your campus?

    The best thing about my school is the attention teachers across campus can give to students, even at the freshman level. The faculty in my department, Environmental Resources and Forest Engineering, take a considerable amount of time out of their schedules to work with the freshman class, talk to us about their research, involve us in department projects and events, advise us in selecting courses, and making us feel comfortable in what is a very difficult major. I would have had a much harder first semester if the faculty had not made us feel so welcome .

  6. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

    Our school, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, is certainly known for it's great concern with all and any environmental issues. Students are often labeled hippies, ecofreaks, environmentalists, and activists. Despite this mix of stereotypes, we are best known for the immense progress we are making and the innovations that come out of our school that help conserve and protect the environment. Despite the small size of the school, we are well-regarded for this. Our faculty are often contacted by private companies and municipal govenrments to advise or work on large engineering, conservation, and remediation projects.

    The cold winters. I am not used to winters since I'm from the south and we don't have such winters.

    SUNY-ESF is certainly for the environmentally-conscious student, and those that are truly interested in making a difference in the world. There are opportunities for those looking to enter creative, innovative, and meaningful employment fields such as environmental studies and policy, forest biology, and landscape architecture.

    We are one of the top 100 schools in the US.

  12. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

    My school is a strict environmental school so it's hard to find classes outside that and clubs outside of environmentalism. We have Syracuse Univeristy to make up for that lack but because of budget cuts we are being limited by the number of SU classes we can take.

TUITION & AID

All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA. Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
