What are the academics like at your school?

Devon

Certain professors may know you by name, but for the most part you don't get a very personal experience with professors. Favorite class would be chemistry and material science they both were talk by the best teachers I have ever had and I loved everyday i had the class. Least favorite would be calculus 1, 2, 3 because for 1 and 2 it was talk by an asian that couldnt teach very well was difficult to understand and he moved too quickly making the difficulty increased and then for calc 3 I have a one armed russian that barely speaks english and writes so poorly that i have to take my own notes straight from the book and teach myself all the material.Participation varies usually its not very good. No students dont have intellectual convos and very few are even intellectual. Very lowmlevel of competitiveness in class b.c. everyone sleeps. Ship systems is a pretty unique class. I am a marine engineering major. Never seen a professor outside of class. The school needs to increase its requirements academically. Geared toward getting a job.

Classes are okay at best. but some professors you cannot reach except for the time they are on campus for class.

My favorite class has yet to be navigation, it is definetly exciting to learn the many things that this school offers than others dont, least favorite depends on what your major is, more than likely if the class isnt related to your major u wont enjoy it lol but then again thats common sense:) class participation is a must and also required, plus it only helps u , if u participate in class, you will understand the subject better so why not? intellectual conversation happen on a daily basis considering our students help each other study often a walk to the classroom may be full of a conversation discussing what they though about the homework and such , some students are definetly competitive you have the kids who no matter in the fact that our schooll provides the hardest classes around that strive for 3.5 gpa and achieve them, its all aout what u want to bring to the table1 the most unique class ive taken in my freshman year basic safety training! we went to firefighting school and donned full firefighting gear and fought fires, and in labs learned first aid and it was so much fun! my major at maritime is marine environmental science with a double minor in biology and oceanography & meteorology, i absolutely admire and appreciate the chair to my department because she is an amazing teacher and part of our faculty.as a freshman we take, chemistry, meteorology, math and such, and we get to do nice experiments in the lab to further comprehend what is being done in class or discussed. Definetly here is the place were professors are always available to help, they all have office hours, plus we all have maritime emails so contacting our professors is an easy task, they are always willing to help, or sit down and discuss something u dont understand:) yeah u will always have that teacher who you feel hates when u ask questions but thats everywhere right? our academic requirements our higher than most colleges out there since in order to graduate most our majors require massive amounts of credits , summer sea term for regimented license cadets and intensive internships for intern options, students are closely monitored , early reports are given in to report if a student is showing signs of struggle in academics, and are also placed in academic probation and restricted registration if the required gpa for your major is not achieved , which makes the student work ward the next semester to get out of it, it is a hard school as students may be asked to leave the school for poor academic performance, so u have to try ur best, because you will see the great results . and education here is geared for both, many students here pursue their license as to pursue their dreams to become, captains and mates aboard ships, carriers , tugs etc. and be an oficer in the merchant marines, and the opportunity to become an officer in the navy or the marine corps through the naval rotc unit located in our school .then , u have the students who study marine environmental science to become amazing research scientists, the kids who study engineering cause they dream of working at a nuclear power plant in the future, there are so many options, its all about your effort, what you put into it and at the end most probably you will be staring your dream job in the face, if u did everything possible in your hands to make it happen as an individual, lets never forget college is a way for you to be succesful, but it needs you to create your own sucess!:D

The engineering faculty has a few gems but for the most part is total shit. The upper division courses are useful although to date most of the majors are unaccredited.

The classes (besides a few lectures) are a decently small size, conducive to intimate learning. The school's overall GPA standard isn't that high. Somehow a lot of students fail classes repeatedly but manage to eventually pass and graduate. I think it has nothing to do with the faculty; all of my professors thus far have been more than proficient in teaching their subjects well. So the school has low standards. Everything is lenient. It's a good school if you don't want to try too hard for your first year, take it easy.
