SUNY Maritime College Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Mary

I have a strong sense of pride concerning SUNY Maritime College since my father attended this school well before me. There is a strong bond that is formed through the years of attendance here and a completely different atmosphere compared to every other college.

The best thing about Maritime is the experiences you get to have as a student. If I could change anything about the college it would be the professors. I think the size of maritime is perfect not too big or too small. Most people have never heard of the school and they are either really interested to hear more about its uniqueness or they don't care. Most of the time I'm in my dorm there isn't much to do on campus. The college town of Maritime is Manhattan located across the east river. Terrible administration. Too many controversies for me to address just one of them. I would say Maritime lacks school pride. I would say the most unusual thing about the school are some of the students, I have never seen weirder people in my life only maritime could have such weird people. I'll always remember my first cruise. Most frequent complaint is probably the food.

In general, I would say do not come here. Unless you feel like getting bitched at by total fucking nerds who believe that once they put on a fake uniform that they hold some sort of supreme power. I came here to travel, which I got to do. But I realized there are many other ways to do that. The campus is very small, not too much off campus to do. Everyone leaves on the weekends and this place becomes a ghost town.

The best thing about suny maritime? the friends you will make:) our school is just the right size were you get to meet everybody and not be just one more student in the school. i spend most of my time on campus because i live three hours away and going home is not a luxury i can afford , but trust me you wont be the only human left on campus its a great opportunity to meet up with other students and make new friends:) our college town, new york city people love visiting the attractions on the weekends and the bus leaves right from our campus to train stations so its pretty convenient and a way to explore the city and the luxury of new york and have some fun. Suny maritimes administration and faculty is amazing beyond a doubt u will always have those teachers you dont like, or the teacher that u never understand what they are teaching and then you have the amazing teachers that you cant wait to go to their classes day after day! remember we are college students, the time about whining about teachers is over, we make our own school schedules, so pick the teachers u like and that you will most likely enjoy workin with, a fellow classmate might have suggested the teacher, or your roomate might tell u they are the best at teaching the class, listen to the suggestions they are always right ! specially when the suggestion is coming from an upperclass student at this college, they have been there longer, they would know the ins and out of the school:) biggest recent controversy on campus lol just fun we had a miracle snow day and we had a humongous snowball fight hat included our regimental students and our civilians playing capture the flag in a foot of snow! they are rare and unique moments at our school, where u see a student smile cause they managed to sucessfully skate in their uniform shoes across sidewalk ice , etc.. to some of us like me for a part of the year this is our home. school pride is developed here, and definetly encouraged, some of us have it and some dont , but it is definetly found when we play against our rival Kings pint in any sport:) the one experience i will always remember is going through indoctrination with my fellow classmates to join the regiment. true its a strenous time, its the time were most of us realize being alone and away from our parents is hard, u will cry and be humbled and remember that you are no better than anyone else but a team, and trust me you wont get through if u try doing it all on ur own, u need ur classmates, as a team u will make it through every day for two weeks and have the strongest friendships as you stand at graduation stating the oath to ur school knowing u made it, and that the people who helped you through it are standing right beside u:)

Bad food, bad classes, bad quality of life. Don't go here.

Maritime is a love-hate experience. Everyone in the regiment complains incessantly about it but in the long run, they love the experience they're gaining from it and the deep bonds they are encouraged to make. For civilians, life is considerably easier, but also much more boring because we actually have free time. There are plenty of Division III sports which everyone is encouraged to join. (They're walk on.) If you're not the athletic type, there are other clubs but none of them seem that exciting. I know of chorus and a few religious groups. If you're into things on the water, the power boat club or sailing team or club are great. (There's a scuba club too.) We have a lot of boats (and the ship!) Other than that, there's a game room that isn't open late enough. There are study lounges in New Dorms (the civilian dorm) but there's nothing to do in them and the heat and A/C don't work. I think it's done on purpose to discourage people from hanging out. People get away with drinking on campus even though it's supposed to be dry. Even when they get in trouble, it's usually a slap on the wrist, or demerits if you're in the regiment. It's always 5 o'clock at Maritime. There's also a group of stoners. I don't know if it existed before I came, but we're here. We're peaceful; we don't bother people but housing is trying desperately to get rid of us. Let them try.
