SUNY Maritime College Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Devon

I'm simply going to answer all the suggested questions Im not really sure what groups are the most popular but as far as sports go i would say football, lacrosse, swimming, and soccer are the most popular sports. I am on the cross country team. If your interested in cross country let me know, but ill be brief. I love the team its a lot of fun, really good people, and you'll have a lot of cool experiences like Saturday practices in central park. I would not say people leave their doors open because theft isn't exactly uncommon for freshman, but I am not anal about always locking my door. Athletic events are decently popular, the sports I mentioned usually get to the playoffs or at least have some good rivalry games attended by a decent crowd. We do have some guest speakers dating scene is pretty limited so good luck I met my closest friends through indoctrination, I was part of their section for my first year and one is my roommate. Trust me the one thing about maritime is that the only way you wont have a group of friends is if you try not to make them. If i'm awake at 2am i am studying, however some people would be sneaking back on campus Big events: homecoming, ROTC Ball, semiformal, Mug-o-ween, not much else school has a dry campus policy, NO PARTIES Frats and sororities=non existent Last weekend I had a cross country meet You do pretty much anything if you leave campus GO into NYC and find fun things to do

popular teams on campus, football, and swimming as they have been the ones to achieve national recognition but our school includes many sports such as volleyball, baseball, basketball ,lacrosse, soccer etc.. I am a freshman on the volleyball team, have to say this season the camaraderie between the girls was amazing, we always supported each other and gave it our all it is a definite worthwhile experience to be involved here, alot of students in their dorms trust their suitemates or roomates to not take their stuff around here but some of us still lock our doors cause obviously everybody in school is not always a student and we dont know what other people besides us might be up to.the dating scene i wont lie, the male to female ratio is not in advante for the mles as there are not many girls that ateend the school compared to the amount of guys who go here, but its not impossible, if im awake at 2 am , i might be studying with a classmate, playing dominoes with the guys, having an amazing conversation with my roomate, watching a movie etc.. events that happen every year, ring dance for our juniors, spring ball, Marine Corps / Navy ball etc.. how often do people party? good question depends on who you are, many people leave to the city, have dance nights in the rooms . our school doesnt have any fraternities or sororities so i cant speak to that. last weekend , i chilled on campus with my friends, played dominoes, watched movies etc... since our campus is a dry campus- meaning no drinking allowed on it!!! lots of people watch movies, go to the city, sleep over classmates houses, go scuba diving(those licensed of course! etc...

The varsity sports vary in quality although the sailing program and waterfront is premier.

Our football team went undefeated this season, which left an almost tangible sense of pride and comradeship. A lot of students go to football and hockey games. (Especially those against Kings Point, our rivals.) Like I said, there's the game room; it has darks, fooseball, ping pong, pool, and a tv. We have "Thursdays in the TIV," usually a comedian or comedian. Parties don't exist; a bunch of people chilling, drinking beers in a room does exist. Probably the coolest campus-wise events are "Mug-O-Ween" and Mug Rebellion. Both involve the first year regimental students, aka Mugs. Mug-O-Ween is the Thursday before halloween. Everyone that isn't a mug or isn't in the Reg gets absurdly drunk in private (again, no real parties) and goes through the Mug decks (floors) which are decorated as haunted houses. This year, I followed 4 shots of crappy vodka with zombies crawling around my feet and drunk, consensual, friends with benefits sex. The haunted house was the best part of my night. Mug Rebellion, as it may hint at, is when at the end of the year, the Mugs get back at their squad leaders and IDOs (I don't know what it stands for actually.) with practical jokes which usually get way out of hand. I've yet to experience it, but I look forward to being a bystander keeping some degree of peace. There' also ROTC ball, since there's a Naval Reserve base on our campus. For the girls who get to go with their young men in dress blues, it's probably a romantic's dream come true. THE GAZEBOS ARE WHERE IT'S AT! We're supposed to smoke cigarettes only in the gazebos, which doesn't happen at all (especially when it's this cold out!), but that makes them a social gathering place. The gazebo is where I met all of my friends. In the winter, if it snows, students build snow up around the sides and turn it into gazigloo! It's the general meeting spot for everything. There are several on campus, but "the" gazebo is the one near New Dorm.
