Syracuse University Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Daniel

The social divide between Greeks and non-Greeks. I am Greek, but it's absolutely ridiculous that there is so much rivalry over who has a set of letters and who doesn't. I mean, some of my best friends are non-Greek, and I am in no way ashamed of that. In addition, some of my Greek Brothers whom I've introduced to my non-Greek friends have become very compatible. The whole situation makes no sense, and is very indicative of the school.

Cecelia

The school is mostly a party school and many people seem to be un-academically focused. It can make the social scene very tired and annoying

Victoria

The price. Although it is a wonderful school, Syracuse is a private university and thus, the price is a bit steep.

Somiya

Syracuse University is a great university, yet it has neglected the advancement of the social science departments. Physical sciences, engineering as well as gymnasiums have recieved massive funding and have obtained wonderful equipment, tools, etc., but this funding is not spread throughout other departments in need. Another concern is the large class sciences for physical science courses. Asking questions and receiving assistance in a lecture hall is nearly impossible, when it is needed the most.

Jideofor

The weather. I always have a cough, cold...

Melissa

The worst thing about my school is the intense work load. On an average night, I don't sleep until two AM. I am a hard worker, and try to get everything done to the best of my ability, but it is so different from high school where I need to put my best into everything I do. Professors seem to grade extremely harshly, even when I put so much effort into my work. Only rarely do I feel as if my hard work is paying off.

Katelyn

The students tend to put a big emphasis on socializing - if you're looking for an institution that is heavy on academics, certain programs, such as the architecture, business, and pre-law are very academic-oriented and usually have more serious students. Most other students are big on parties, sporting events, and the extracurriculars, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but more often than not, abundant alcohol is the focal point of socializing.

Ya-Ting

communication between diversities.

Jamal

Link Hall is old and dirty

Rachel

The worst thing for Syracuse University is the method used for dining. As a student progresses, there are more meal plan choices and varieties, but as a freshman, we are required to have one of three dining hall meal plans. Although lump sums might be easier to process, it is perturbing to "waste" an entire dining hall meal swipe just for a bowl of cereal or a small salad. Most students have fourteen meals a week, so to balance it out is a difficult task.

Christopher

I think the worst thing about my school is the fact that it is very segregated, students usually only hang around with other students of the same ethnicity.

Erin

Again, the focus of greek life. It's 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} at SU. Also, there are a crazy number of "JAPs" at SU--Jewish American Princesses. AKA rich Jewish girls from places like Greenwich, Connecticut. Very stuck up, very elitist.

Chasity

Definitely embracing our diversity. There are so many different cultures that inhabit SU's campus, but we students sometimes refuse to infuse ourselves in with different groups & learn more about ourselves from other people.

Esther

Social life is one of the aspects that I consider the worst thing about my school. It is not difficult to make friends here; however, there are not many activities to do around campus when you are hanging out with friends. If you want to do anything, you would have to go downtown or off campus, but that is not always possible, especially when you do not have a car. Life can get somewhat boring on the weekends when you have nowehere to go and nothing to do. It is a bit suffocating at times.

Kimberly

The segregation here is almost blatant, so few of our events and groups are racially diverse. It's a sad truth.

Annalisa

I think the worst thing is the divide from the Syracuse community. There is a major highway (I-81) that literally separates the college campus from the low-income urban community of downtown Syracuse. As a result, a lot of students never see a reason to venture off-campus.

Angelo

The worse thing about Syracuse is the cost since it makes it hard for poverty stricken people to attend

Stephanie

The worst thing about my school is that sometimes you are stuck with professors that aren't very helpful. This may happen in other colleges as well. There are those times when you are challegned in a class and struggle. I struggled so much in one of my classes. Asking for help to my biology professor was like a slap in the face. He would literary make you feel stupid and always telling us that his class is impossible. I don't let certain classes like this drop my self esteem, instead it encouarges me to work harder.

Yelena

The openness that people lack towards other cultures.

Jeury

Honestly, there is not much negative things I can mention about SU. If I had to mention something I would say its yearly financial aid package. It feels like they offer you a great financial aid package your freshman year, to bring you in. Once your enrolled, while the years pass by your financial aid package decreases immensely. This is my major disagreement with SU as of now.

Oluwaseun

The worst thing about this school, I believe, is students don't take full advantage of the resources offered. These resources open so many doors, and create so many oppurtunities, its a shame that some of them aren't being total tapped into.

Bill

The worst thing about my school is the area surrounding it. While downtown Syracuse offers some interesting places to go to, (restaurants, bars, record stores) there is simply not enough to get me to go down there all that often. As a result, you must be absolutely secure in the fact that staying on campus for the majority of your college life won't be a problem. If anything needs work at Syracuse University, it is the city beneath it.

Steven

The worst thing about my school is the weather. Syracuse is extremely cold during different parts of the year as well as being very dreary due to the constant weather conditions. As well, for a Division I school, we have an extremely poor football team. It would be nice to go to a school like Penn State that really has pride in their winning football team.

Colleen

While walking to classes is great excerise, it can get really cold. You have to be prepared for all sorts of weather, and it can be hard to stay dry if it rains. The Syracuse winters can be harsh so you have to bundle up like an explorer from the north and feel a little silly, but at least you're warm. But if the weather is all i have to complain about, ithat's a good thing.

Tim

hiring proffesors that have trouble speaking English

Jonathan

How there are not enough division 1 sports for men

Amber

The worst thing about Syracuse I would definitely say is the weather, which is something that obviously can't be changed or influenced. After so many months of snow and cold a general depression seems to loom over students but as soon as spring comes the morale is lifted considerably. Besides that, I would say the cost and expenses of the school are a downer, as it makes it very difficult for middle class families to afford without extensive loans and debt.

Mallory

Too much of a party school- too many frat parties, too much underage drinking.

Ankur

Syracuse University is a big school. Because of this it isn't hard to get lost in the crowd. Many of the core classes are in huge lecture halls and teachers have to have multiple TAs to help teach classes. If you don't make an attempt to stick out and talk to your teachers they won't be able to help you. This can make it difficult for students who are the most outgoing such as myself. As always the teachers are there to help you so its really important to get involved and make yourself known.

Guillermo

The weather. When you wake up and it is cold and cloudy it depresses you.

David

The worst thing about my school is the attitude of anti-intellectualism that more than half the student body seems to have. There are many students who seem to want to party and do anything that facilitates partying; what is unfortunate for these individuals is that they have separated both genreal knowledge and book smarts from the perverbial list of things that are considered fun.

Marissa

The worst thing about Syracuse University is the parking on campus. I am a commuter; I live about a half an hour away from campus. I have to park a few miles away from campus and take a bus in every morning. In the evenings, I am allowed to park on designated lots if theyre not full. However, on game days and weekends these lots are closed and there are not enough busses to get to campus on time. Freshmen are not even allowed to park on campus. This part of Syracuse University needs some work.

Breanna

Coming from NYC, I would say the worst thing about Syracuse is that its not much of a "city" town. Outside of the campus there isn't really much to do or anything really going on. Once you leave campus there isn't really a night life here to look forward too. The majority of good activites take place on campus

Matt

This school is nice I like it a lot but the weather is known to be bad. However, it's my first year here and the weather has been pretty nice. It hasn't gotten too cold and it hasn't snowed yet even though it's already mid-November. I also heard that it is cloudy most of the time here, but so far most of the time it has been sunny. But next year is a new year and it could be completely different.

Chris

Probably the same item mention above.

Nathan

The weather is not the best. Its kinda cold and rainy a lot.

Ricardo

Honestly? The only slight downside is the cold weather/winter, but its not even that bad. Syracuse gets a lot of hype for terible weather, but its very tolerable if you're prepared.

Christine

Everyone is the SAME. Atleast for the most part all the girls dress the same, act the same, and talk the same way. I don't. Thus, I don't fit in. Because I refuse to conform I get strange looks for say, wearing jeans instead of leggings and not having a blackberry, and being Catholic instead of Jewish. Not only this but all the girls are stuck in some kind of high school mentality with all the drama nonsense, which I hate and refuse to participate in.

James

In my opinion, Syracuse University does not have any downsides. While the location of the university leads to some security issues, the school itself is amazing. The only bad aspect of the area is the increased amount of assaults committed against students. Currently this year there has been about ten armed robberies. This is the only issue with the location of the university, but there are no issues with the university itself.

Timothy

Completely unbalanced on focus, giving all the resources to worthless departments like the varsity sports teams and Newhouse where it's extremely rare for anyone remotely useful to graduate from these areas, and ignoring the useful departments. The school is horribly disorganized, extremely overpriced, and unfriendly to people from middle-class families who aren't part of any varsity sports.

Anna

Some of the buildings are really old and should be updated and remodeled. The engineering school really needs a makeover.

Kari

The worst part about Syracuse University is the weather. During the fall and winter it is very cold and is often raining or snowing. It is uncomfortable walking to class in the rain and the snow and ice make it difficult. When walking to class I really have to bundle up in many layers which is annoying once I get to class and the classroom is hot. I have to take off most of my layers and there is no where to put coats and scarves and gloves that won't get everything else wet.

Karen

There are a couple of dorms here that are rotting away, windows are getting rusty as are the bathroom sinks, walls are getting dirty. i feel like they should renovate these dorms rather than building a new dorm, which they are currently working on. I just feel like they're going to end up bulldozing the old dorms and just making new ones to compensate all the ones they will eventually remove.

Tuso

The worst thing about Syracuse University is the Centro bus schedule at night and on the weekends. When night falls many students have to walk to the College Place Bus stop to insure their safety. The buses run really slow at night and on the weekends.

Matt

We are diverse on paper, but socially we are segregated.

James

The worst thing about my school maybe the lack of diversity in the foods in the dinning centers.

Katelyn

For me the worst thing at first was the size of the university. Being from a really small town (and a small high school to go along with it), the size of campus and the number of people on campus was kind of intimidating to me at first. Campus very quickly becomes managable though, and you get to know other people very quickly.

Jack

One negative aspect of Syracuse University is that the school is located in the city. For me, being from Vermont, it has been a big change that has taught me a lot. The city of Syracuse is not very clean, exciting or safe; however, it does have the positive quality of drawing in events such as division I football and basketball as well as incredible concerts like Phish and Girl Talk. For some people, another negative aspect of the university is the weather. In Syracuse snow, rain, cold weather and occasional sun are all typical weather patterns.

Winston

The school is not very diverse in the people who are here. Ther are many different people of different backgrounds but most of the people are cut from the same cloth.

Eric

The class is predominately upper middle class, to rich, and even though there is a significant non-white population, it is predominately segregated.
