College is a very important decision. I believe deciding which school to attend is very critical. It can literally mean life or death financially. I enrolled in an out of state college to get away from home, but I should have taken my time deciding where I should go. Plan accordingly and make sure you are well prepared for what's ahead of you. Learn all about loans and really decide if your dream college is worth attending. Please make sure you visit the college you wish to attend and meet people who attend that specific college to find out their different perspectives. My biggest mistake was not being informed enough about Tennessee State University and had I known more about the school that accepted me I would have made a different decision. I have no regrets because now I can inform those that lack the knowledge that I received from my college experience.

I would advise parents and/or students about finding the right college and making the most of the college experience is to start looking early and seriously. First, I would advise to look on the student abilities and talents, also what he or she is interested in, to decide which major to pick. Second, students and parents should decide on financial situation and look for it at least 2 years ahead, who will pay for college and how, do not hesitate to apply for financial aid and scholarships. Finally, based on the first two decisions, look for the college that best fits students major and area of interest, and financial situation of student. Parents and students, my advice is get serious about students future education and be concern about it early.

I would advise students/parents to do research on their school and area of interest. Personally, I came from a city called Los Angeles to the country of Nashville. The environment is totally different from my home town. Although I was upset with my decision of moving out here in Nashville, you also have to make the best of things and realize your whole purpose of attending this school was for an education. Students should always surround theirselves around positive because most of the time, people tend to lose focus and fail. I would also recommend students/parents to also surf the internet and find things like college board help you find the school of your interest. Maybe even log into myspace or facebook and find people who attend the school of their interest to find out the inside scoop. I hope this was good advice.

My advice that I would give to parents and/or students is choose your college carefully. Don't choose a college based on what your friends and family say. Choose the collge that you know that you can see yourself attending and evoloving into a better person. Make yourself feel proud of the college choice that made. Now go out there and make something of yourself at the college of YOUR choice!!!!

Research, research, and research. Ask students and faculty who attend the school of your interest about it. Also make sure that the school offers everything you want and need from it, i.e: major, minor, activities. Once you're at the college of your choice study and do your school work first to get it out the way, be nice and considerate to others, and do whatever else you want or need to do afterwards.

Denise

To try to be focused on what you want to accomplish with your education, but to remember it's alright if you change your major once you've been exposed to the various fields that a college has to offer.

Take your time and look at all options. Don't just look at who gives the most money- sometimes it is worth it to pay a little more for a better experience- academically, socially, emotionally and mentally. While college IS about education, it is also supposed to be 'the best 4(or 2 or 6 or whatever) years of your life'. Its a learning experience and its alot harder to learn if you wake up daily with a negative attitude because you hate the college you go to. At the same time don't try to take on too much debt either. this includes credit cards, school loans etc. Be VERY careful with credit cards and debit cards as well, its very easy to overspend with both especially the bank cards w/Mastercard/ Visa logos. And above all-WORK HARD- study, study, study but don't totally forget what rest and fun mean.

SAVE MONEY... apply for scholarships and never take no for a answer. I have always wanted to go to TSU ever since i was 11 years old. I knew thats where i wanted to be but you have to know that you have to make the decision for your self. Your parents cant make it for you , counselors or your peers. Your future is what you make it and it reflect's how many opportunities that you have actually taken adavantage of. As you can see I used the word "you" a numerous amount of times. This is because this the time in your life to be so selfish about yourself and it's perfectly ok!!! I love my college experience so far and I can't wait to continue on with my collegiate career.

The advice that I would give to parents and/or students would be to start your process early! Most students tend to wait to the last minute and end up missing out on scholarships or financial assistance. Also keep in mind of all the expenses that are involved because, college is not cheap. If you know that your child is not a strong believer in education, start off small (community college, online classes) so that you will not waste so much money. Last but not least, APPLY FOR EVERYTHING!!!!
