What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Melanie

I would never change the birth of my first born child. Although it did have a hold on my decision on weather or not to go straight to school or not. But the fact that I know now how hard it is to do anything you want in life, I would say just keep doing what you know is best for you and your family. I would tell myself not to worry about what other people say and or want you to do with your life because what they have in mind for you isn't always right for you.

A transitons from highschool to college is a rather competitive transition. Its really more of knowing are you ready to be on your own and handle your responsiblities as a student and young adult, and ready to take the challenge on higher education with no one pushing you every step of the way. Finacially, there is so much you can do as a student. One way to get caught up on finacial aid is my filling out a FAFSA which is government aid money for you to particpate in school. Take a good advantage of this meaning apply for as many grants as you can get and see what else you qualify for. Look at scholarships that the goverment and your school has to offer you. It doesnt have to be academically all the time. Just looking at the talents and services you do can get you scholarships. Its very important to make sure your on top of your finacial aid. Last, academics ; once again no one is going to push you to study and to show up to class on time. Its up to you to be responsible and study, as well as turn in assigmensts on time! Goodluck!

Tiffany

Stay focused, everyone at this school is smart and you cannot get away with zero effort like you did in high school. You have to try to get the grades you want and are used to.

Jordan

If I could go back and give the high school Jordon advice, I would tell myself to not sweat the small stuff. These people who you go to high school with are going to be such a small part of your life in the long run, don't sweat what they have to say about you now. Enjoy your time and your experience now but always look forward to your future.

Jennifer

Start early!!! Do not procrastinate. If there is a college that you are interested in do your research on what type of school it is, what it offers and how it fits in line with your career path. Because you have financial needs, apply for all grant and scholarship opportunities. Be proactive with your future. Get invloved in campus activities, and participate in things that you wouldnt normally consider. Take chances and net work. Stay forcued and most importantly surround yourself with individual whom are like minded.

Julian

I would have told myself to try harder for a better grade and gpa...

Take college seriously. You can't simply "drop" a class without any consequences. It will affect you later in life if you do not do well your freshman year of college. Grades are extremely important in order for me to reach my dream of being a dentist. I wish i could go back in time and have a fresh start.

College is beyond different from high school. Make sure to not slack off in high school, high school grades and grade point average are very important when it comes to applying for college and scholarships. Apply for MANY scholarships, not just university offered scholarships, but also outside scholarships. Keep in contact with high school teachers, recommendations are always needed. Learn now how to not become easily distracted in a class room or while studying. Studying is the key to passing college, and that doesn?t mean to study the day before the exam, but every day. Not all professors have the same accent as you, so it may come a time where you don?t understanding what is being said. Record your professors lectures, not everything on the test is from the book some comes from the professor themselves. Before arriving to college make sure that your financial aid and scholarships are in place. Check to see that the university has received all required documents before arriving. Go on college visits, sit in the classrooms during an actual lecture, see the living conditions, visit the cafeteria, explore the university, it may become your home away from home.

Wow, I would tell myself to not let sucess scare the crap out of me. I have allowed graduating and doing something great in my life to get in my way and now I'm 25 and I still have two more years left. I would have to sit myself down and say that you will go through alot of things in college but keep your eyes on what you came to get. Dont let anyone shatter that for you!

Earleana

The advice that I would give myself is to focus and put graduation first. Study consistently and finish what you start and do it persistently the on the first shot. Also, apply for as many scholarships as possible and take out less loans.

College is truly what you make and education is something that you never want to stop investing in. Four years go by so fast and they are engulfed in memories with lifelong friends and moments in life of personal development. I never expected to go to a university due to the cost and high requirements but there is a college for you and believe me they want you and it will be free there is so much money available for you to attend school and gain an experience money can never give you. Factories close, sports aren't guaranteed and rap is not a growing genre however educating yourself about those areas and learning how to market yourself in any area of your interest can be found in college guaranteed. I can't stress to you enough the importance of going after your Bachelors degree does what you love and getting paid to do it. COLLEGE is the best place for you to expand your minds beyond the small city limits of Longview, Texas, there is so much more beyond the border the sky is the limit and although that's clich? you know my story now create your own.

As a high school senior, I looked at my senior year as a break from all the years I have previously been in school. With the new seniority, I felt as though I could relax a little with the enjoyment of my senior activites. As a result, I can look back and say, I may not have been as focused as I should have. Knowing what I know now about the collegiate life, I would have told myself to continue to pay attention in my senior high school classes seeing as these classes could assist me in college and also pass the classes given that I could earn a higher class rank to be easily accepted to a college of my choice.

Some advice that I would offer parents and students that would be first time college students on making the right decesion on picking a college is first deceding what region of the United states they would like to be in. The second thing is to check out the college before you attend because the websites only put the good pictures of the college or University up. The third thing is making sure that the student major is offered at the University or College. I also would advise them to do alot of research on the college.

Travis

You should start early, stay focused on the goal, be patient. Consider your options real well. Don't give up, even a little bit.

Avanti

Sometimes it's not exactly the apperance of the school that determines how well of an education you may recieve. It's always important as a parent to be open with your chil and let he/she become more responsible for themselves. Parents should know that they still serve a purpose with the student; it's time for the student to be on their on and show more responsibility. The students should most certainly remember the reason they enrolled in college. It is important for the student to go to class and take care of business. Never overload yourself but show dedication to their schooling. It's alright to have fun and party; never let it take over you and hold you back. After all of the hard work and deadlines; it will show that you never forgot what you were in college for. It the end of the day it will certainly pay off.

Ivy

The advice that I have to give is that start the research process early. Go to visit the school and talk to the administration and the students also so that you may be able to get their perspective on the school from their point of view. There are usually a lot of resources available, people just have to ask the questions and find out where they are. Take your time picking the school because your college career will define who you will be for the rest of your life.

Clarisa

When looking for a school to attend for the next four years make sure you have what you want to major in. Just getting through often leaves you choosing something for the sake of graduating. Which means you could end up regreting what you've chosen. Therefor, always remain positive! Don't be afraid to ask students how they feel about the school. To much negativity can dampen your college experience! Always look for the positive! Each semester write out expectations , goals, try to stay organized, and above all DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! This way you won't ever feel guilty for having a social life!

Trenee

Make first that you tour the school out in see if thats wat environment you can be arrounnd

dominyk

find a college that is in a place where u would want to live because your going to be there for the next few years of your life. and also make sure the school you pick has a good program for your major

MAke a list of schools and vist all of them and pick which one that you think you feel the most comfortable at and get it 110{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} !

Make you decision about which college you will attend based on what you personality is. I would advise the high school senior to tour the campus you have in mind that way you can judge whether or not that university fits your personality or not. The better fitting your personality to the university that you attend, the more successful you will be.

Jerome

Make sure that you do as much research as you feel neccessary. Parents should make sure that their children know the importance of the first year of college, and the importance of a college education in general. They should know that peer pressure will be a big issue to conquer in any college, but they should make the most mature decisions and make the best of their college years. The college experience is quite remarkable, but if you are completely prepared for it, you ensure yourself that it will be great one indeed.

Sparkle

Make the best choice and the right chocie

Chanell

Do whatever feels right to you, not your family or friends.

Ashley

I would tell the parents to encourage and support their children as much as possible, because that extra push/support does help from time to time; also, to allow their child(ren) to go to the college of their choice and not hold them back. I would tell the students to go to the school they feel the best about, and do not procrastinate on any schoolwork! If the students need help, I would encourage them to seek tutorial support or help from their fellow classmates, because they can provide a different point of view of the lecture than the professor could.

Adam

Try to find the most affordable with good teachers because if you don't make enough money it is hard to stay focused in school. Also pick a field that you want to study in, always do what makes you happy.

Julian

My advice to students is to make sure you remember what you came to college for, an education. It is easy to fall into the allure of freedom and fun; however, it is really difficult to gain academic time back that you lost. So just stay focused, all the fun never goes anywhere but time is never stationary. To parents my advice is to remember that your kids are still your kids, whether they have left the nest or not. Keep guiding them like they were still in your flock, they will need it; do not view this as an opportunity to relieve your pockets. Your child needs more guidance now than they ever did while in your care. Make sure they know that just because they are ?independent? it does not mean that further tutelage is shunned, in fact it is encouraged.

Erin

Make sure you utilize all available resources.

When selecting a college there are two primary considerations and two secondary considerations. Primarily, you want to select a college that has the best program. Secondly, discover whether campus life (relationship between students/professors, workload expectations, liberal/conservative, large/small) fit your personal preferences for a college. Once you've narrowed your choice by finding the best fit for your main concerns, you can look at the secondary considerations, which are cost, and location. While the greatest program in the world may be found in Hawaii, if you can't afford to live in that location (cost of living) and can't afford the tuition, it does you no good! This should narrow your university choices into a manageable number, and make the final decision much easier. Living on campus/near campus helps students gain the most of their college education, because it makes it easier to interact with other students, become involved in extracurricular activities, and have better access to campus resources (such as libraries/computer labs).

Jamiksi

Make sure that the parent as well as the student understand thier financial responsibility and make sure that the college offer what you're looking for in a school. Research all of the options of all schools before you make a decision on the school that you choose to attend. Do not make a decision after the student recieve one acceptance letter from a school. If the student does not get accepted to the college of thier choice, move to the state and become a resident and then start off by taking a small class that's offered and you will be able to start taking classes toward your degree without having to continue to be denied.

Clarence

Keep your mind open

My advice to parents would be to get to know your child. If she /he prefers large classrooms or small classrooms. If they need special attention is certain area, and the gender ratio as well as the race ratio. Another advice I would offer is how involved is your child's chosen major department in it's field. Meet with the professors, and financial aid couselors. Make sure you get all the information like what loans are available, what types of scholarships are out there. Once we get into school it's scary in itself so we love all the help we can get.

Jerrina

I would advised to go to the campus talk to the people on campus before you register make sure it a place that you like to be around before you register it is a lot of money going into college. I would advised talk to conuslers and admistration everyone before I would give the money. As a student you have to be ready for the challenges of life its different in High School becuase you have family members and teachers trying to make sure that you are on top of your work. In college that descion is up to you.
