Texas State University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Torry

For the frat guys/ girls yes.

Katy

Absolutely not!! It's a persona that people make. It happens everywhere though.

Whitney

These stereotypes are untrue and unfair. Students at Texas State, as in all schools, enjoy6 going out and yes - we can usually find a fun place to hang out most nights of the week. Recently, the school has made serious attempts to correct our image and be more respected in the academic community. As a matter-of-fact, in the last four years, students proposed and passed an act that changed our school's name from Southwest Texas to Texas State University. It may be true that a lot of us (me included) had planned to go to UT, but many people I have talked to agree with me that TxState turned out to be such a welcoming, spirited, fun and professional community, that we forgot all about prior plans.

Carly

All universities have parties, Texas State doesn't have more or less than other schools. The academics standards have tripled in the last 5 years.

Cameron

Some of them are exemplified by certain greek organizations that know these stereotypes exist and try to emplify them i guess.

Andy

some say so, but I believe those claims to come from people unfamiliar with the school.

Alex

Yes, there are parties every day of the week.

Sarah

Yes and no. Yes, student here go out and have fun but what school doesn't have students who go out and have fun-probably none.

Alex

Great students- yes Party school- same as every other college

Cody

Absolutely not. Like all colleges, there are parties and if a student wants to find trouble that is most certainly available to them. However, I have found Texas State to be a school with endless opportunities for students and a faculty that is dedicated to your intellectual growth. It has also been my experience that recruiters from many of the finest companies in the world recruit talent at Texas State.

Brittany

Yes sometimes they are actually.

Irina

I think it depends on the people you surround yourself with. As a Music major, I spend all of my time at the Music Building and it's almost like a second home. It's nice how everyone in the building knows everybody. As far as the stereotypes go, I would have to say that it is inaccurate. We really are always kept busy doing something involving music. There might be a party every now and then, but to say that we're a big party school...I'm don't think the music building atmosphere fits into that stereotype.

Toby

For the most part these stereotypes arent accurate. Many TX State students are top-notch scholars who truly care about the quality of their educationa and are willing to work hard for their degree.

Brian

Not any longer. I began at Texas State in 2003 and have seen huge changes in the character of students just since then. Great changes have been made toward making our academic programs more competitive, which will make all of our diplomas worth more money after we get out of here.

Courtney

Yes!

Meggie

No see above response. Don't get me wrong we play hard but we work hard too!

Angel

Neither of these are true. I was accepted to the University of Texas but found their political science program to be less than satisfactory for my needs. We are the most politically active school in the state of Texas. I have worked on countless campaigns since attending this University and it has opened several doors for me when I graduate. I party very little and am way too busy to sit around and get wasted. College students party wherever you go to school but I wouldn't say we do it more than any other University.

Toby

NO, that actualy this school is one of the hardests schools to get into in the state of texas and that just because we can sit next to the river doesnt make us a party school, people are just jelouse that we have a river and that we are smart and can party at the same time!

Arielle

As with all stereotypes, there are some that fit the generalizations made;however, they are just that - generalizations. There are many students at Texas State and many orgainzations that do not fit those stereotypes.

matt!

We do like to party, but we aren't like a waste of life like I've heard use described as. We do party harder and better, but we can still handle our school work, jobs and lives. It is actually easier to get a job if you are a Bobcat because you aren't cocky and think you deserve to be CEO straight out of college. We know that everyone has to start somewhere and work their way up. We are willing to work.

Toby

I'd have to say NO. Yes, TX State students do drink and have fun, but I would not say we are huge party school. I would say that we are an amazing community of people that truly care about one another.

Brandi

While I would agree that it's about 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students who attend Texas State, it really is a diverse campus. You can find stereotypical Frat boys and Sorority girls, but you can also find intellectuals, alternatives, beatniks, activists, hippies, artists, etc. Since the university is in such a central location in Texas, there is a good mix of everyone, from gender identities and political stand points to race, religion, and sexual orientations.

Riley

To some degree, yes. As far as the drinking..but I think this mostly applies to students who just turn 21 and are away from home for the first time. A lot of freshmen tend to go crazy when it comes to rebellion from parents for the first time and do some stupid shit. Also..you're in COLLEGE people. Grow the fuck up. The supply of alcohol is NOT going to dry up overnight. Yes..you're only 21 once, but you have the rest of your life to drink. The goal is NOT to destroy your liver in one night. Also..as college educated people, I'm really surprised at some of the stupid shit I hear coming out of students mouths as I walk by or overhear things. This IS a predominantly white school, but fairly liberal though. Most people are open minded and liberal..but there still is a large degree of things I see and hear that makes me wonder just HOW much attention to pay in class to things like "white privilege", "diversity", "gay acceptance", the difference between sex and gender, the acceptance of transsexuals in today's society, ect. You may not think so, but the REAL world is going to slap you in the face one day if you think that your world that you've built around you is the only one out there. Learn to embrace diversity NOW or otherwise when you get into the working world, you're going to look like an uneducated, bigoted idiot.

Kaitlin

Absolutly not. This was my first and only choice and I couldn't be happier. The level of difficutly is only what you put in or how much you take advantage of the system.

Jesse

No and yes. I'm sure there are quite a few students who came here to party. I had a chance to go to UT, but I decided against it. I think Texas State has more to offer than it is portrayed, and compared to earlier years, students actually care more about their studies. The university is growing rapidly; our student population totals more than 28,000. It is working on gaining a better image by being more competitive and raising admission standards. Our athletic department is improving, and our football program is currently taking steps to move into a larger division.
