The University of Texas at Austin Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Makayla

That the campus eateries don't really tend to the fact that students don't have a lot of money for food. All of the eateries along the street just outside the campus are rather expensive, and I feel like the school or zoning should make more of an effort to promote cheaper, even healthier options on that front. In addition, the shops within campus (besides the buffets/cafeterias) are overpriced in all of their products. I understand that the university doesn't buy direct so their needs to be some money added to compensate, but it still seems that all of the food is well above its retail value, making kids spend more on top of their tuition.

My school, like for most, has been my greatest companion to my new-found "adult" freedom. Unlike most, however, my school is exactly 1,264 miles from home. Although there are so many things to love about this University, if I had to choose one downside it would be that it doesnt take but a handful of students from out of state (10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} to be exact). Although I took that percentage as a challenge, I wish more "out-of-staters" were accepted and had the opportunity to see how amazing life at the greatest university in the country really is.

Andrea

The worst thing about University of Texas at Austin is that since there are so many people here, you can be easily looked over and forgotten. If you think you are good at something, there are a thousand people here who are better at it than you are. If you have lived your life being the big fish in a small pond, coming here you will know be a tadpole among a sea of sharks. It can be a reality check on many levels, it is up to the you whether they are up for that challange.

Chloe

The University of Texas at Austin was a wonderful school. However, as with all schools, there were downfalls. Some organizations that I was involved with (and made incredible memories with) had members whom were blatantly racist and held ‘Old-South’ viewpoints. In so, they were diminutive of more liberal or open-minded ideas. This could, at times, be hard to hear or experience.

Emily

I would say that the lack of financial aid or scholarships available is the worst thing about the school. College is expensive and Texas doesn't help much.

Erika

The most typical complaint about The University of Texas is the size of the school. Some of the classes are big and it is in an urban city that has a lot to offer, but to some it may be a disadvantage. I would say keep an open mind and take advantage of all the resources it offers to prevent from getting lost in the crowd.

Kathleen

The worst part about the Univeristy of Texas is the size of the school. The size of the student body as well as the size of the campus can be overwhelming. The large campus makes it easy to get lost and it's a long walk between classes, however with time the campus becomes familiar and there are shuttles to bring you around campus which helps with the walking.

Caroline

The worst part about The University of Texas at Austin is that it is somewhat difficult to make new friends if you are not heavily involved in social activities.

miranda

There are simply too many people for each student to receive personal attention. When it comes time to register, talk about financial aid, study abroad, or go to the campus health clinic there are always long lines, loads of paperwork, and generally a huge amount of waiting and hassle. The situation with student housing is similar, and it's difficult to get a place somewhere nice. There is a giant dorm called Jester where basically all freshman and a lot of unlucky older students get lumped together when the rest of the places run out of room.

Brianna

The worst thing about my school, for me personally, is the competiveness between the distinctive schools. Because UT is such a large school, everyone cannot be accepted into a specific major. Instead of most medium-sized schools that allow you to change your major at any time, UT makes their students apply to a new major. This process sometimes holds student’s back or leaves them with the only option of finding a different major if they are denied acceptance. Another aspect that I dislike about my school is that you cannot minor in Business; instead you earn a certificate.

Melanie

I consider the University of Texas at Austin's immense size the worst thing about my school. Its size is intimidating and its auditorium class sizes only justifies that that is the worst thing about UT and most students can end up feeling like just a number. The amount of students is usually too much for one professor to handle which is why most usually acquire the aid of several teacher assistants. But, the worst thing can also be considered its best quality because the large campus and class sizes can expose the students to different cultures and mind sets.

Melissa

The worst thing about the school would probably be choosing what to do with your time. There's so much available it's hard to focus on only one thing.

Sebastian

The traffic if you're a commuter because there are so many people in Austin.

Nzubechukwu

Well, one of the things about my school is that the classes are made harder than they should be which has students taking the hard classes in community colleges. I would like to say although it can get really though, once a student has the mind set to make it, then you have nothing to worry about. Confidence and faith can help one through it all.

Audra

The worst thing about the school was the parking. We had to park so far away, but at least there were busses and shuttles to take to help get you into the campus.

Ellen

There are so many people, you really have to make a niche for yourslef otherwise you'll feel like just another face in the crowd. It can be disillusioning at first, but just try to open up and join a club right away.

wilson

I believe that the worst thing about school is a school who does not have teachers who are passionate about wanting to teach students. Learning is a very important aspect in a child's life. A child is nothing but an innocent pupil and schools need to be able to provide nourishment of knowledge to the child brain and become great leaders for a brighter future tomorrow. Teachers must set a goal for these students and must take responsibility in being able to teach their students in the most efficient way.

Aspen

The classrooms are too large. It's hard trying to meet with your professors if they have set office hours and you may have a class during that time. I think professors should setup alternate office hours as well.

Andrew

It's big. Very big. Professors won't know you unless you go out of the way to introduce yourself. It can honestly take 10 minutes to walk from one class to another. But the worst part is that once meet someone, it can be quite hard to ever find them again. The best way to meet people is to join a group of some sort.

Micaela

The worst thing about the University of Texas at Austin is the groups of friends because the same race tend to stick together. For example, you would see many Asians together or Hispanics.

Lauren

The worst thing about the University of Texs is the sheer size. I read somewhere that the population of the student body is well over 50,000 now. When there are events here at UT, theres not even any breathing room.

Kathleen

In my department, I feel that the students in the BFA program are treated better than those in the BA program. We are not allowed the same classes, even though our majors both include dance and I feel that the dance faculty does not support the BA program as extensively as the BFA. I am still enjoying my major, but wish that both majors could feel more of an equality between them.

Ingrid

My school can be very intimidating. If you haven't visited before actually starting school here, your in for a worldwind. So to come to a school like this, the people can be the worst. You need to be open to anything and you have to be willing to let your guard down. This school is filled with pride and expectation, and any person who comes not willing to live by that, won't last here.

Lauren

There is a large population of partiers. It seems like some of the students don't even do homework over the weekend. Instead, they drink all weekend and then don't show up to class on monday. Second to that, parking is horrible.

Arlene

The University of Texas at Austin lets the students experience independency. Many students especially freshmen faces many struggles as they have always been pampered by their parents. They make careless mistakes causing them to hinder on their path to success; however, each single blunder can be seen as a gift as it teaches them a valuable life lesson. The University of Texas at Austin may give too much independency to students, but it is how reality is in the business world, the fashion world, and the medical field.

Mendi

The worst thing is that the campus is landlocked. It is in the middle of the downtown area, so there is not much room to increase the size of the campus.

Kimberly

Sometimes I think my campus is way too liberal. There are a lot of people that are really liberal or not-religious, which is fine, until they try to demean other people's beliefs. I am a moderately conservative Catholic, and although I respect all people's choices in life, I find it unfair when they don't return the favor.

Lily

The biggest downside to attending the University of Texas at Austin are the last classroom sizes. I knew this fact coming in as a Freshman, however I still chose to attend this university, because it had always been my dream school. With large classroom sizes, students must make an effort on their own part, in order to reach out to the professor and/or TA, to get a better chance of individual attention.

Rebecca

The worst thing about UT would be the huge introductory class sizes, ranging from 100 to 350 people. With such large classes, the professor's time is stretched and it can be difficult to ask questions during and after lectures. Larger classes take longer to enter the classroom and this detracts from the professor's lecture time. In result, some professors rush their lectures or cut out important information in order to finish on time.

Samantha

The activities on campus are often hard to attend if you don't live near the campus

Amanda

The University of Texas was a huge culture shock for me. I graduated with 96 students, including myself, and was thrown into a school with an unbelievable class size. The number of students at UT is responsible for the incredible diversity as well, which was strange. Looking back, the size and differences may not be bad, technically, it was just a huge shock for a small town girl.

Nancy

The worst thing about the school might be that it is very big and hard to get to know your proffesors but if you really try and go out your way, it is possible.

Lidia

Classes too large. Difficult to establish relationships with professors and system processes.

Obiora

The worst thing about UT is the distance between your classes. Class periods vary by 10 - 15 minutes where as the school is so large that it takes longer walking to the location. The buses are also packed and dont run on time. This affects your punctuality and nothing more.

CarlosTovias

The Uniersity of Texas at Austin is very big and has many resourses, but there are very few people that know how to take full advantage of it all. There are many things goign on all the time and too many options. This can be very time consuming and overwhelming if not handled properly.

Emily

The worst thing about The University of Texas at Austin is that the campus is largely seperated by colleges or degree types and you find that co-mingling among the different colleges is few and far between. Each college has it's own library and general eating area/housing clusters which can be usefull when finding study partners and future field partners, but not so helpful when you want to branch out and discover knew things.

Alex

The worst thing about the university is that it seems to have grown too large for its own good. UT Austin currently accomodates 50,000 students and recently erected several brand new buildings on campus for a total of some 30+ million dollars; but, at the same time as it was doing this, budget cuts were proposed in the foreign language departments - the department of my major, Japanese Language. Because of this, the Russian Language studies department, one of the smaller departmnets, may not exist at UT in the fall of 2011.

Andrew

Parking is very hard to find, and many people end up paying for a parking pass to a lot that isn't very close to the college. Also apartment prices in the area are very high.

Meg

The worst thing about the University of Texas at Austin is that for most of the year, the temperature exceeds 85 degrees, and walking to class can make you sweat. I had a 15-20 minute walk to every class because I lived in an off-campus dorm and most of the fall semester days were blazing hot.

Sarah

The worst thing is the big classes. My biggest was 525. But I also have classes of only 25.

Amy

What I consider the worst thing about my school is the social life. Many are involved or want to be involved in the "crowd." It leaves students debating whether to keep studying or to go out and have a good time with friends. Although night life is a blast, many boast over going out and partying. Those who are studying see this and can easily get pressured into leaving their work behind for some relief of stress from school.

Laila

I wouldn't say there is anything 'bad' in particular at our school, but it does have it's downs sometimes. The resident halls have strict policy when having people stay the night or just come over late. Campus is pretty large, so walking from class to class can seem dreadful sometimes. Other than that, UT is great for me. I love it here and plan on staying until graduation.

Chase

The vast amount of activities readily available to participate in, combined with the size of the school, can be uncomfortably overwhelming.

Sarah

The school is so big that if I weren't in an honors program I would have lots of trouble making friends in my giant science classes.

Crystal

The worst thing about my school really has more to do about me than it does with the school. For me, the greatest struggle here and everywhere in life is money. It would have been a lot cheeper to go to another school but I wanted the University of Texas at Austin experience. I don't regret coming over here in the least. I just understand that I have to work hard.

Genevieve

Long distances to walk in May, June, August, and September seem doubly long in 100+ degree heat

yiyi

It is known for its partying.

Kory

The only problem are the hobos, or transients that roam the streets around the campus. That is not entirely a school problem, but it is the worst thing about the school. I sometimes feel unsafe while walking around at night. When I am on campus I'm not worried because the transients are not allowed on campus.

Elaine

The worst thing about my school is the fact that too many students here are only going here because they are legends or because they love the sports. There are too few students here that are coming here without the help from family and large sports related scholarships and instead are left struggling even though their intelligence should be merit enough.
