What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

As one of my teachers stated, "All beginnings are hard. If it's not hard, it's not a beginning." Coming from a close knit high school and breaking into a new college can seem daunting and overwhelming at times. That's absolutely normal. All fresh starts are a challenge as we attempt to navigate a new system in unfamiliar surroundings and find a niche for ourselves. However, with a smile planted firmly in place and a positive attitude, barriers can be taken down and everlasting friendships can be formed. Challenges build us and teach us lifelong skills to overcome life's struggles. So as a beginner college student, expect some bumps in the road, especially in the beginning. Despite the bumps, or perhaps because of them, persevere and never give up. Planting a tree is not easy, and taking care of it as it grows requires loving care and attention. While starting out in college, let go of the minor issues that crop up and invest in your future by concentrating on classwork and allowing time to network with peers and professors. The fruits reaped down the road will be ever so sweet because of your investment.

I would have planned out more carefully which classes I will need and made sure to first complete those that were a prerequisite for graduate school before taking classes of my choice.

The advise i would give myself is to attend all my classes . If there's one thing i have learned in college is that alot of the classes are repetitive of subjects learned in high school maybe with a little more detail. My experience while attending college has showed me that its not neccesary to over study if you just follow what professors tell you to study grades will be better. I personally feel i rushed myself to live an adult life far too soon , so i would also advise myself to live one day at a time. . I would also tell myself to research career options , what would i have to know in order to achieve career goals. There are so many choices of things you can learn that i would advise myself to get involved with anything and evrything that was free that could build me a better life experience profile. I would also tell myself that reading is very important . You open your mind to all sorts of information and also it keeps you ahead of the game. Its never to early to plan for the future you dream of .

Going back in time, I would tell myself to relax and that everything will work out for the best. The credits that I took in high school will all get tranfered to college and are accepted. But, I would also encourage myself to take more AP classes because it definately helps when persuing a specific career. I would also tell myself to keep in mind that college is nothing like high school and you need to give yourself a couple of months to transition. Also, if you have any questions or if you are having a hard time with something, go to the older students because they are more than happy to help.

To make the most of the college experience, students need to be motivated to learn on their own. If they do not have internal motivation for growth and learning than they will not benefit from college. While it may be difficult to find the right school for you, meet with a counselor who can help you through the process.

To find the right college is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack, but if you have the right tools (financial plan, housing plan, etc.) then the needle is really a hammer. Do as much research beforehand as possible before choosing the right place. If the college lets, definitely sit in on a class or two or three. Make sure you speak to the finiancial office even before applying. Hang out in the neighborhood so you can get a feel of what it will be like walking around there and so you'll know before hand that you are giong to be comfortable there. You should even talk to the teachers, and especially the students, because they are the only ones that will give you the honest truth about the school. Find out about the extracurricular activities that are going on there and make sure they suit your desires and needs. Walk around the actual school also to get a feel for the environment and the facilties. Last, but definitely not least important, make sure that you will be able to afford the tuition, as many students are unable to do so due to lack of funding.

The minute you start looking for colleges, know what it is you want to do for the rest of your life. Too many parents tell their children that they have until their sophmore year to really narrow their choices down. I completely disagree with that attitude. You need to hit the ground running. You need to make connections and need to see what your future profession truly encompasses. College is like the superbowl. There are tons of oppurtunities to get off track and forget what your goal is. Forget the parties and the craziness and focus on that degree because that will get you into any party you want in the future. Too many people live for the moment when they should be preparing for the moments ahead.

For your child, finding the college for him/her usually means the one where most of their friends are going and where they can have the most fun. For parents, it is all about what school is the most affordable and where can your child receive the best education. The right college can be found through a comprimse between the two. The importance of life after college has to be made apparent to your child before their college life ever begins. Let your children know that college should indeed be the most fun filled time of their lives, but no matter where he/she ends up going they must take their education seriously...or else they will end up dancing the jig for nickels and quarters outside the 7-11 on mainstreet next to the bar that smells like a 1000 cats.

My advice that I would give parents and students is to be relalistic on your goals you want to accomplish. It is okay for parents to want the best for their children, but they have to remember you cannot live your children's lives. You should go to college to pursue your own dreams and aspirations not your parents. The skies the limit; don't be afraid and go after what you want. There may be a day that you say to yourself should have, could have, or would have, you have nothing to loose. Reach for your dreams.

One thing I must say is that, a student has to go with their heart and take up a major that is appealing to their interest. As time goes on and college education is in the works, the student will explore studies that could change his or her mind of what they want to become a professional in. Researching background history on each college chosen is very important and can be very crucial to the education one will receive.

What I advice to parents is to make sure all details about their kids college, and be very sure what their kids wants and needs, the most important here is that our children get in the right college, because on that depend their future.
