Tuskegee University Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Ebony

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, after experiencing college life, I would have stress to myself to apply for scholarships. When I was high school senior, I was too lazy to fill out scholarships. At that time, I was working two jobs to pay for senior expenses and at the same time, trying to enjoy my last year of high school. It was already stressful enough to reach college deadlines and keep up with my schoolwork, so applying for outside scholarships was the last thing on my mind. I did not realized how this mistake will affect me until the university I wanted to go to did not offer me enough money. Since I wanted to go to Tuskegee University so bad, I had no choice but to pay for half the tuition with money out my parent?s pockets. This decision put my parents in deep debt because they will sacrifice bills to pay for my tuition. Now, I am trying to apply for as many scholarships as I can so I will be able to graduate from Tuskegee University.

If I could go back in time and talk to the high school version of me I would advise myself to study hard, pick friends that have the same goals and ambitions that I have, and to not become side tracked by the short term glamors of the college lifestyle which include; parties, fraternities, and becoming involved with the opposite sex. Along with this advisement I would also tell myself to fill out as many schlorships as possible to make paying for school easier, and to practice better time management skills. Doing this will not only make the transition easier, but it will help make the time in college more enjoyable. This is what I would tell the high school version of myself about college if I could go back in time.

Aaron

If I was able to go back in time to talk to my highschool self, I would remind my self to continue to shoot for being valedictorian because I could have made it if I tried harder. Knowing what I know now about scholarships and financial aid, I would encourage myself to apply to as many scholarships as I can. Also to make sure I manage my finances well in college.

Kalyn

The advice I would give myself is fill out more scholarship. I thought that the money would just come to me because I made good grades but that was not the case. I also would have taking some class over the summer just to keep my mind focus on school and to learn better study habits, because in high school everything was there in black and white but in college you have to think outside of the box. I would have also learn how to ask for help, because before when i did not understand something I would just try to figure it out on my own. That worked in high school but not in college because it is very different and is a little harder to understand.

markita

I would first tell myself to visit more of the colleges that I applied to. I would begin researching my top schools during Freshmen year instead of junior. I should have applied for more scholarships. You don't realize how expensive something is until you need it. I didn't know I would need $180.00 math books. I would tell myself to do alot more research in general. I really wouldn't change anything else that I

Upon visiting myself as a High School seniour I would let myself know that college isn't about the fun and partying its a learning experience, its about being able to adapt to your surroundings and know who you are. The knowledge that is attained in the classrooms is nothing that we haven't learned before, its just a reaffirmation to what we already know and building upon our previous experiences. College is a test of endurance and a test of how well you know yourself and what you believe in. The most important part of the transition is to be able to stand your ground and stand up for what you believe in. Always believe in yourself and trust your instincts. Don't let the little things worry you and never get upset about things you can not control.

Melvin

I would definitely tell myself to fill out more applications for not only scholarships, but for schools. It would have been nice to have more of a choice without having to drastically search for funding. Since, I was a more well rounded high school student instead excelling in one section, such as sports, I had more difficulty finding large scholarships. Though, I did find small ones, those that I did find barely covered books for one semester, so I didn?t bother with them at all. If I knew then that I would be better off just applying for them because they add up, I would be so much better off now. I?d be less stressed and have more time to focus on school.

Jamon

I would tell myself that you will have to be ready to take on major responsibility. This isnt high school anymore, you are about to face the real world. You are going to be on your own, without your parents supervision, you cant go crying to your mom or dad complaining about everything. You have to step up to the plate and take matters into your own hands. There is no time for you to be lazy, if you want to be successful you will have to work for it, put in quality time to study. failure is expected by losers and ignored by winners. There are only two options to commitment, you are either in or you ae out, there is no such thing as in between. Ability is what you are capable of doing, motivation determines what you do and attitude determines how well you do it. Therefore take advantage of each and every opportunity that is put in your face and gasp it because you will never know if you will be able to get that opportunity again. Allowing yourself to do these you are bound to be successful if you just keep your head on straight.

Rashad

I would tell myself to try harder than what i did because college is a big transition in life from a young teenager living under my parents arms. I can achieve anything with some effort put into it. Just work and Believe in yourself and have the will to succeed in whatever i decide to do in life.

Dexton

The first thing I would tell my self is to eliminate all the people that are not trying to better their selves in life. Then, I would tell my self that I need to make the highest grade possible on every test and homework that is giving to me by all teachers. Next, I would make sure that I am studying for ACT and SAT so that i could get closer and closer to highest score because i know that score decides what college I can attend. I would also make sure that I turn in my FAFSA a few weeks earlier than the deadline so that I will find out earlier if I am eligible for it. Finally, I would tell my self never to stop looking for scholarships until I am done with school and most important is to never give up on education.

Lyndsey

One thing I would tell myself is to never give up. College is nothing like high school, were you have to go everyday and you will get in trouble if you miss a day. You learn to grow up, be responsible and you need to keep focused on whats important. It is easy to loose track of what you need in life, but in the end going to college is what will make you that much more sucessful in life. It will get hard at time and you will want to give up and it may not seem worth it, but NO MATTER WHAT, you cannot give up. Toughen up, suck it up and just do it because in the end it will all pay off!!

Francheska

I really have been ready for college life since I was in High School. I take things step by step to get where I am today. I have confidence in myself and my goals have well laid out. I've always been a scholar and dedicated. The hardest thing you do is make friends and try to meet people. Although, I consider myself a friendly and sociable person. The college life is one that I have been able to adapt without many problems. Although I had to devote more time to my studies.

Natasha

I would tell myself time-managment is the most important thing to manage because you should know when its time for class, when to do your school work, and when its socialization time. and once you get that down pack your college year should go well. and dont let anything get in your way of school: MONEY,PEOPLE,or Anything that comes your way.

Nikita

stay in japan for another year or so to establish an academic foundation for myself, finish that online algebra class before senior year was done, do better scholastically and learn not to procrastinate more. other than that, i wouldn't change too much about myself.

Tony

Stay fouse my freshmen year don't like the freedom being away from home get the best of you because it will catch up with you at the end

Kokayia

I would choose a college in state.

Candise

Choose a major wisely, don't play around in school. Learn what you need to know and then graduate. Don't become a professional student and when you have failed move on; don't dwell on the past.

Dana

College is an experience like no other. It is your time in life to make a statement about not only who you are but who you want to become. It is a once in a life time chance, so make every moment last. With that being said, it is important to remember why you are there. The college you chose after a careful elimination process is the one you will be with for the next four or maybe five years and graduate with a Chemical Engineering degree. You will encounter people and situations that you have never experienced before. The only advice I can give is to be smart, and think twice about every move you make. The parties and the boys will always be there but the deadline for that term paper is Monday! No one said that school would be easy but it will be fun. New doors will open up to you and you need to know which ones to close and which ones to embrace the journey that lies ahead. More than anything always put your best foot forward because it is a great feeling of accomplishment to see your hard work pay off.

Jasmine

I would say apply to any schools that a student would even remotely consider attending. Choose schools based on the student's major, how far he/she wants to be from home, and how much financial aid the student will/will not receive. It is easy to decide on a school but then have to attend another school, so remain open-minded and flexible because with the economy on a roller coaster, you never know what can and can't be possible.

Jeremy

When trying to locate the right and the a college that would give the best experince there are a few things that should be taken into consideration. One of them would be understanding the type of person you are. If your a person who likes to be all about your school and business, then the best college for you to look for would be one that has a very good academic atmosphere. With a college campus that really doesn't have too much activity on it but just enough to have some sort of social life. Another one would be to think about if your one how likes to try new things through out your life. If that's the case then you could look for a college that's in another state with different values then the ones that might already have. Basically the best way in doing is understanding who you are and finding a college that would fit the type of person you are.

Jessica

Start by doing reasearch and making sure that the school not only has your childs major but how good of a program it is. Then look at the location of the school, the surroundings and the safety. Then see how much tuition costs make sure the amount your paying for the school satisfies the amount of education and opportunities recieved. Make sure you create a list of possible colleges and compare them by the success rate and the tuition and the education level. Take college tours and really make sure that the student would be comfortable living and attending the college. Also realize almost all dorms have negatives so dont base the living condition on the value of education. Keep a look out for change as well because a decision on something you thought you could never do maybe the best life changing experience.

Brittany

Have a strong support system. Most students thinks that the decision process is easy, but its not. Its anything far from easy. Alot of students make a decision to attend an out-of-state school and begin to get homesick way before the midterms start to come around. Most teens today try everything in their power to get away from their parents once highschool begins, only to try to get even closer to them during their undergrad years. Having a strong support system will help along with everything else in the process, right school, classes, activities, even money.

Courtney

My advice to parents and students about finding the right college is that follow your heart and what your major is going to be. Students don't let someone else pick for you cause you never know it's really the schoool for you. You are the only one that really knows if that school is for you. Making the most of your college experience by living life to the fullest. There are times to have fun and there are times to study. You have to be responibly about every decision you make while in college and when you are on your own in life. Don't let other tell you to do something that you don't want to do. You most always remember to be a leader not a follower. You know what is right and wrong. Never forget that.

Courtney

My advice to students is to attend an institution that the student can have fun and stay focused at the same time. The advice that I have for the parents is to look at the school and it's prestiege instead of the price tag.

Oyejare

i wold say find someplace where u can grow as a person, and can see yourself becoming the peson u will have to be for the rest of your life.

Nakia

They should go visit the all kinds of colleges then narrow down the ones that you like the best. THey visit it again and always go with your gut or heart and make sure the colleges have your major.

Denice

Make sure above all, the school fits you. It may have your intended major, but make sure the campus and the people are perfect for you.

Daviette

Make sure you think long and hard when considering which university to attend. Consider everything from where the school is located to how diverse the student population is, and of course most importantly the academic ciriculum.

Amber

Selecting the right college is similar to selecting a second home. When parents are with there children visiting these schools it is important for them to ask their child, ?Do you feel comfortable here?? In my opinion this has to be one of the most important issues to consider because a lot of students go off to college alone and of those that do some of them are going to an out of state school, so feeling comfortable will help both the children and parents to be more at ease as they start the journey into college. As for making the best of the college experience, communication is very important parents should always be in tune as to what their child is doing as well as the child being willing to share as well. Speaking from the perspective of an out of state student, having my college feel like a second home to me, and having my parents always available to talk to me made my freshman year experience a very successful and happy one. Without that I would have felt home sick and most likely would have wanted to return home after the first semester.

Britney

To make the most of your college experience I would advise parents/students to keep an open mind. College is what you make it, join organizations, be involved, and make lifetime friends. College is the period before you enter the real world, the period where you will make mistakes that will teach you life lessons. College has really turned me into a better student, friend, and overall a better person. Also, learn your balance, I have a 3.9 grade point average and I had a great social life. At school I'm able to be myself and I have a great group of friends that share the same interest as me.

Shanneka

Don't wait until the last minute to take care of your financial aid. Even if it is your first choice, you won't be able to attend that school unless you can pay for it. So, DONT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!

Nicole

The best advice I could give someone (student or parent) would be to actually visit these campuses. Actually being able to see yourself on the campus is important as well as exploring it. Talking to actual students is important as well, because though faculty members work there, the students will be on the end that you are on. Eat in the school's cafe, vist and ask about all dorms, not just the ones shown to you for more then likey, those are the ones you will be put into. Make copies of all paperwork and have them at ready. That's the best advice I could give any parent or student.

Davi-Anne

Make sure you do you research about the school. Even if you come to visit, try to speak to students that already attend the school. Not the people giving you the tour. Never judge a book by it cover.

Iman

I believe parents should allow their children to visit whatever schools the child is interested in and a few others that the parent believes would be appropriate. Visiting a school gives the child more insight on the environment and education experience. The parent should also be willing to allow the child to attend any school desired regardless of distance. Always thinking of what's best for the child, not them. Once enrolled in school, the student should be open to unfamiliars and optimistic about everything. College life isn't easy, but it can be a plethora of fun and learning experiences that help in the developement of a successful human being.

Destini

I would tell students to make a list and write down all the things that interest them about a college. For example, write down the size, surrounding, quality of education, campus life, people, etc and go with the one that is the best option for you. Life is what you make and your college experience is going to be the best time of your life. No matter how good or bad the experience may start out try to make the best out of the situation. You have to remember that you have to make your own fun. Live it up in college because you will never get these valuable years back.

Lashawndra

Be open and willing to accept things that aren't what you exected.

Arianna

Selecting the right college enhances the student?s ability to make the most out of their college experience. It is important to know the students goals, interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Different colleges and their communities play key roles in the development of such features. It is also important to consider the cultural aspect of the decision. Choosing a historically black college or university entails a desire to learn more about one's history and culture. The students desire to remain close to home or to go as far away as possible is also a critical factor in the decision process. Some students are more susceptible to home sickness than others and with this come weight gain and depression. If the student knows he must come home often, it is best not to go far. With all of these things taken into consideration the last thing that MAKES a college campus is the social aspect. Choose a place that fits the student?s interests in society and social events. Becoming involved is easy and very vital to the future success and happiness of the student?s college career.

Jeremy

If you feel that you have to have someone to go to the same school with you, then make sure its someone who is going in the same direction you're going. Don't choose the one that's going just to get away from home and wanting to party all the time. Remember you have to get an education, its the one thing that can not be taken away from you. While in college be sure to have a good social life cause it won't be anything else like it. Have fun as much as you can be never go over board with it to where you'll start to forget about the work you have to do the next day. A college experience should the one the best times you experince in your life time and it's also where you make some of yourlife long friends so please choose carefully.

sarah

I would tell the first time freshmans to attend th the pre-orientation sessions at the schools. Always go and visit the the campus and the communtiy before offically making the place you will be the next 4 or 5 years. also, look at the graduation rates, and see how many students graduate on time or in their specified years. I would tell the parents to make sure all fincial aid is take care of. Help their child keep all loan papers in order and organized. parents have to realize that this is their childs first year of college and some of them will not be organized and on top of things like they should be. a student really dont catch on the hang of things untill their sophmore year, thats why we need family support. parents should make sure that they have all contact numbers to every department of the school (bursar, fincial aid, childs academic adviser).

Angelo

I would really reccomend to parents and their children choosing a college to go and visit the college and to not take a guided tour. Walk around by yourself and really take the campus in for yourselves. Talk to the normal students to really find out what the school is like. If the child has a lot of distractions at home for instance family and friends, then choose a school that is a little aways from home so that you can focus on your studies and will not be running home every weekend. Also try and find your own identity quickly and effiecntly so that you will not waste time dealing with drama with your peers.

Corwin

When making a choice about what schools to attend keep this few thing in mind; distance, location, cost. Distance because if you like me you dont want to be to far from your family but far enough so the can't just pop up on you with out telling you. Location because you want to know whats around the school like shopping malls, grocery stores, and what kind of communite is around the school. Im sure you would not want to go to a school with a communite that has a high crime rate.

JeMetra

When coming across the decision of choosing the right college, make sure that they capus fits your academic needs and as well as perosonal needs. Make the your campus of interest fit you!

Britische

I would say make sure you at least have a top five choice of universities to apply. You should visit each campus and ask students of that campus how life is there. Ask details of the positive and negative aspects, and then make your final decision.

Angela

To select the best choice for your future school, make sure as a parent or student that it is the best fit for your child or you as a student. By making a selection as far as a four year university, schools are expensive and selecting the wrong school in this economy could cause damage on your pocket. A student will also succeed in an environment that he/she likes.

Michaela

Learn all that is offered and never take advantage of your education although your feel it is unnecessary to learn. Parents make sure that your allow children to pick their own school and do not force them to get an education if their wish is not to attend a college at all.

Rendle

In choosing a desired college, visitation is a must. Some people choose colloges based off the hear say method. But upon entering they find that the schol is nothing that they thought it was or heard it would be. I feel the students make the experience for the school worth while or not. For example, here at Tuskegee Uiniversity, our students enteract with each other, we sing songs and chants and most of all are focused on what we are here at school for. We are the reason Tuskegee is the way it is, although the administration assists us in get what we request, they play their role well. A college should be a place where the student finds him or herself. To understand what path they will start and continue down on. This is a time for the student to become a man or women based on the struggles that come with adulthood and leaving the parents wing. As the Bible says, "When i was a child i thought like a child and acted like a child, but when i grew older i put childish things behind me." And this is ultimately what will occur while entering in adulthood.

Ashley

Students should make sure they are going to or applying for a college that has the following essentials: great academic environment condusive to learning; support system that will help keep students on track (friends, family, tutors, etc); a school that will guarantee you financial aid to assist with the cost of attandance; somewhere the student will feel safe and comfortable; and the assurance that once you earn your desired degree(s) you have a job waiting for you upon graduation. Parents should let the students make the defining decision on which school they want to attend based on their knowledge of the institution. Parents should also be supportive of their child's decision to further enhance their life by bettering themselves with the acquisition on knowledge.

Tammica

The advice I would give to students and parents alike would be to make sure you/your young adult is fully prepared for the change of environment that college includes. While college is a great opportunity both academically and socially, it is also a huge responsibility. It was in college that I learned most of my independence. Even if you believe that you are ready for the transition you should make sure that college is the right avenue to travel. College can be a fun and rewarding experience if you adequately learn and take full advantage of the opportunities availabe for you and prepare yourself in advance. If you are prepared both mentally and academically college can be an opportunity any individual can both enjoy and profit from.

Jazmine

i would encourage students to pick the school that they feel will support their goals and that the school is just right. Pick the school that will support you financially. Also, it's important to pick the school that offered you the most money for a scholarship. Make sure that students actually visit the school of your chioce before making any decisions because the school of your chioce may not be whqat you had expected it be. So make sure that you pick the school in which you feel at home and comfortable.

Andrew

Start early, continue to search, trust God.
