What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would advise parents and/or students who are trying to find the right college and make the most out of their college experience to first apply to at least three different colleges. It is important to keep an open mind and not be set on one particular school without having other options. Also I think it is important not to make your decisions solely based on finances because there are scholarships and financial aide available. In order to get the most out of your college experience, I would advise students to get involved as much as they can. It is important however not to spread yourself to thin and try to be involved in everything. I would say the most important thing to remember is chosing your college and experiencing everything that goes along with it is something very important and not to be taken lightly.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell the students to think very carefully about what they want in a school. The size and location do matter. It is important to decide if they want their school to have the same values they uphold. They need to look at what they want to study and what activities they want to partici;ate in and keep those things in mind when selecting. i would advise parents to be as supportive as possible. Money is a very important factor but support of the student and encouraging them to follow their dreams is so much more importants.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

this sounds shallow i know but i wish i had known the food would not be all that great. i could have at least been prepared instead of disappointed

Make sure and take all areas of the school into consideration before making a decision. You may like the people at one school, but it's a waste of time if the academics are weak. When I was deciding on schools I only looked at the soccer programs. I based my entire college choice on which team and program I liked them most. I quickly learned that there is a lot more to school than sports. I transfered after my freshmen year to a school that I like academically, I liked the team, the people, and the campus. I was so much happier at my second school. Make sure and do your research on each school and base your decisions on the whole package, not just one area.

What's unique about your campus?

I consider the community at Union to be the best part of school. Everyone on campus is friendly and looking to meet new people and friends. I have made better friends in a year than I have my entire life. The school is small enough to meet people, but not so big that you get lost in the crowd and feel overwhelmed.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

As a student, you need to evaluate why you want to attend this university. Is it because your girlfriend is headed there? Or because you heard that they were the number one party school? When you are choosing a school, though social life can play a factor, the most important criteria that the university should meet is that it is a place that can better your future. An institution with a supportive community that will enable you to pursue a career that you love, prepare you to be the best you can be in your career path, and allow you to truly enjoy your time as a college student. This does not always require a high price tag or a prestigious staff and it might mean hunting for scholarships. Don't spend the rest of your life regretting that you could have stayed out of debt by recieving the same education a little closer to home than you initially preferred, but also don't take a chance regretting staying at the school your parents always wanted you to attend when a different school might have enabled you to have the job you always wanted.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

My professors actually care about me. To them, I am a name and not a number.

My classmates are people who are very concerned with helping and ministering to people around the world and community. They love to relax and have fun by hanging out around the area. My classmates are also very involved with school work and work very hard at what they do.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

When deciding what college to attend, have a list on what you would want in a school but realize that it is impossible to find the perfect school. Visit the schools and talk to former and present students of the school to see what they think of the school. When in college find the people that best compliment you. It may take a while to find that group of friends. Make sure your school work does not suffer when with your buddies. This is a rare oppurtunity you have in life, make the best of it.

What kind of person should attend this school?

Anyone who loves community and having many people to be around. Someone who does not mind working hard on school work and loves to be involved with very thought provoking conversations. A person who wants to grow as a better person should attend Union University.

Union University is best known for being Christian-based. It is a university founded upon Christian morals and values. Union strives very hard to incorporate faith into the classroom and the overall experience at the university. It truly lives up to its reputation.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Advice I would give to parents/and or students would be to pray about the decision you are about to make. It could be the most important decision of your life. It will determine the quality of education you receive, what friends you make, and/or the type of career you begin upon graduation. Weigh the universities pros and cons. Try to find which one will fit you best. Each school will posess different qualities that could appeal to you or not appeal to you. Ultimately, take the decision seriously! It is very important and is more than just about partying. You are preparing yourself for the rest of your life. Parents, give your child wisdom and guidance, but ultimately leave the decision up to them.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing at my Union is the quality of food we get for the amount of money we pay for it. On average we pay about $7.50 per meal and the food is not of good quality at all. It is often tasteless. Sometimes it makes me sick just to look at it.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would encourage both prospective students and their parents to research the schools in which they have interest. College visits are a great opportunity to get a first person perspective in addition to the opportunity to ask questions that may not have been answered in the college brochure. It is also a great idea, once you have chosen to visit a school, to request to stay overnight with a student. This gives the prospective student the opportunity to gain an understanding of what a typical day for a student at that college looks like. Host students are also an excellent source of information that may not be presented on a campus tour. A great way to make the most of your college experience is simple: get involved! Join organizations not only on campus, but get involved in the surrounding community. Not only is this a great way to make friends, but it is also a wonderful way to expand your horizons and worldviews.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

There is nothing that I can think of that I would have wished to know before coming. The things I have learned and experienced have been, for the most part, positive, and part of a growing experience.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I think that Union University could improve in the area of racial diversity. The university is currently a mostly white university, but has been taking the initiative in recent years to recruit students from other backgrounds. The situation is improving, and the university is doing a great job, but it is not yet where they desire it to be.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

Union has a strong focus on the integration of faith and learning. Here, you recieve a great education within the subject of your major, but you also learn how to live as a follower of Christ in today's world. Union offers a place to shape your worldview and align it with biblical principles. It's an excellent place to learn and grow in every area of your life.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Finding the right college and making the most of the college experience is all about balance. After reducing your list of schools to the ones that meet your desired criteria, a campus visit is the most valuable resource for a prospective student. No amount of research can capture the essence of a college like being on campus. My first choice was quickly changed when the actual flavor of the campus paled in comparison with my third choice. Choosing a college where you feel comfortable and meets your basic standards will position you to be able to make the most of your college experience. Once there, budget your time and get involved in things that interest you. Many students daily overbook themselves and leave no time to enjoy these precious years. There is just as much danger, however, in allowing fear to inhibit you from seeking out the many opportunities available to grow, learn, and experience things that will shape your future. The right balance of academics, wellness, social endeavors, and extra-curricular activities is vital to making the most of these years.

What kind of person should attend this school?

Someone who is motivated to do really well and seek a degree should attend this school. More than that, though, someone who is committed to Christ, and desires to learn more about him, and how to live a life that honors him first should attend this school. Also, someone willing to be patient and submit to some partially strict guidelines should attend here.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Dont be afraid to shopp around. Take aspects of each that you like and look for a college that combines them. As a new student, make sure to stay at college the first several weekends to get involved and meet people. It is very important to form a core group a friends, and then branch out to experience different people.
