Angelina - 05/17/2020

The United States Naval Academy is an institution unmatched by any other. Since it's a military institution, the trials that all students face are constantly physically and mentally draining. Even though much of it, especially the first year, is exhausting, the unique part of it is the culture of the people. The 15 credit hours per semester policy, high academic standards, the Physical Readiness Tests every semester, peer ranking system, and the military obligations that come with being at the Academy take a toil on every student in one way or another, but it brings everyone together. Regardless of if someone was prior enlisted, went to the Naval Academy Preparatory School or another university before, or came directly after graduating high school, everyone comes in on a clean slate. There is no easier place to find lifelong bonds and friendships that carry long into one's naval career and beyond.

Sean - 02/28/2020

The United States Naval Academy is a place where students arrive with hopes of reaching and extending beyond their perceived potential. There are many opportunities for leadership and development in preparation for service in the U.S. Armed Forces, and we are constantly held to high standards in the areas of morals, mental attitude, overall aptitude, and physical abilities. However, the Naval Academy can be a hard place to attend, especially coming straight out of high school because of the restrictions of common freedoms, the disciplined environment, and the overall culture struggles at times. Nonetheless, I am happy with my decision to attend, it is a place that aligns with my own intrinsic values and a place I will forever cherish.

Connor - 11/11/2019

The United States Naval Academy is known for producing highly qualified Navy and Marine Corps Officers. The school is restrictive, as it is a military school, and it does not allow for off Campus Housing. Academically, USNA is very competitive to even the Ivy Leagues. The school has small class sizes averaging around 12, and it 's academic support programs are unparalleled. There is always someone to help you if you need help academically, physically, or mentally. I have never felt unsafe as the school is fully guarded with the city of Annapolis. If you need a break from your room, you can visit Downtown Annapolis during your time off. The food is not always the greatest, but the experience at USNA is unparalleled. I would highly recommend attending the United States Naval Academy.

Tough school to get in, but rewarding. The people are what make it worth it. The professors are always well-qualified and will often go out of their way to meet with you and help you study and succeed. There are lots of programs in which you can get tutored, such as midshipmen tutors and also they hire people to come and teach afterschool.

United States Naval Academy FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at United States Naval Academy?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for United States Naval Academy is 9%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020 , _____ students were offered admission. The number of males who applied was _____ vs the number of females which was _____.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If you want to find the right college for you, you have to go see it for yourself and even spend a few days visiting. When you visit, immerse yourself in campus life, attend classes, stay in the dorm, and eat the food. Only after experiencing the aforementioned will you be able to truly decide what college you would like to attend. Not everyone is made to be a "Division I" athlete or go to the "Big State" just because they are a legacy or all their friends are doing it. Some of the best colleges and universities across the nation are small and often secluded. The most important thing to remember is to follow your heart and follow your instincts. If you step onto a campus and suddenly feel a sense of belonging, a sense of pride, and a desire to be there, you're probably in the right place. Once you're at the right college for you, the sky is the limit.

  14. What are the academics like at your school?

If you love science, math, and engineering, then this is the place for you. I was never interested in any of those subjects, and am currently an economics major, but still have to take many required technical courses. While calculus I is calculus I anywhere, it's still very different here at the academy. If you are very strong in math or science, the required courses will still probably give you a challenge. You must remember you do not have as nearly the amount of time normal college students get to study, so factoring a full courseload on top of a plethora of other activities is stressful to say the least.

  15. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Most popular things here are varsity/intramural sports. The catch is everyone HAS to participate in at least some sort of sport. But intramurals are all what you make of them and can actually get pretty competitive. Glee Club has definitely picked up, along with many other activities that you would see on a civilian college campus.

  16. What is your overall opinion of this school?

In my opinion the best thing here is the friendships you form with your classmates. Yes, the education, while very challenging, is extremely valuable, but I think forming friendships and learning how to lead those around you is the most important.

  17. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Some more than others. When I was at Annapolis in the 1990's, there was a counter-culture that resisted many of the strictures and themes the school attempts to inculcate into the Midshipmen. Finding one's place in this tug-of-war between being a rule-following "team player" and expressing one's individuality is a process that breeds self-awareness and has been a central component of the Naval Academy experience for generations. One stereotype that is not true is that Naval Academy Midshipmen are necessarily politically “conservative.” Most Midshipmen (and military personnel) I have known were fairly apolitical, and those that did have a strong interest in politics were moderate in their views. A poll taken of midshipmen during the fall of the 2008 election revealed that Midshipmen supported Barack Obama in greater numbers than John McCain (remarkable given that McCain is himself a Naval Academy graduate). Another misconception is that one has to be physically combative or war-like to succeed in the military. Although one cannot be absolutely morally opposed to the use of force under any circumstance and serve in the military, many of the most peace-loving people I know have a military background. That said, the “warrior ethos” is an important component of leading a military unit. Above all, I would say that people from the Naval Academy (along with many who served in the military) are among the most trustworthy, reliable, practical, and pragmatic individuals you will find. The training gives one the ability to look at problems objectively, from the standpoint of what works best, and to execute on ideas with integrity and velocity. This is a valuable life skill.
