Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

It is a lot smaller than most of the other schools that I considered. It offers great opportunities for engineering students and business majors by partnering with NASA and other organizations to offer internships as well as career opportunities for UAH graduates.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I believe college can be a wonderful learning experience for students. I would encourage any potential college student to explore all of his or her options before deciding where to spend the next four years. They should examine the atmosphere surrounding the university, the attitudes of the professors, as well as the quality of the education offered in his or her field of interest. Once a student has chosen a respected university, I would encourage him or her to get involved. Granted, college is about getting a degree and furthering one's education, it is also about learning to make new friends from different origins in a new environment and fending for yourself in the real world. Sitting alone in a dorm room is no way to enjoy a college experience.

What kind of person should attend this school?

Someone who is athletic, likes a small school, and makes friends easily would feel very at home at my school. UAH would be perfect for someone who is interested in pursuing a degree in engineering, considering the school's partnership with NASA. It also has wonderfully accredited nursing and business programs as well.

What's unique about your campus?

I like the classes as well as the extra-curricular activities. The campus is very nice as well.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The dorms could be worked on as well as the university food.

The best advice to give would be to find a college based on what you want your college experience to be. You want to go to a college that is fun, but one that also encourages education. You can only be a young adult once, and need to live life to the fullest. If you stay cooped up in the dorm room studying and never have a social life, you will regret not having at least a little fun years down the road. If you party every night and never study, it might harm your ability to find rewarding future careers. The balance between the two is made up of time management, wisdom through experience, and the willpower to stay focused on the education at hand.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The housing rules make students move out of the dorms during every break. (ie. spring break, christmas, etc.)

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My first choice when trying to detemine where to go to school was the bigger party school where all my friends went but after thinking about what would be better for my future I decided on the university of alabama in Huntsville. It is a smaller campus with a big university feel. I am able to focus more on my studies and take part in fun activities that ace provides to the students for free like watching movies on a big screen or going ice skating its always fun. Now that i have been in school for three yeas and see where my friends are compared to me I see that I am closer to graduating than many of them are. I am happy with my choice and wouldn't change it for anything.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Any engineering student almost everyone is an engineering major so you will be able to find a lot of help. Most people end up taking the same classes together so it is easy to make friends. Since it is a smaller school so you get more one on one time with the teachers.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

How pretty the campus is and how everyone i meet is an engineering major just like me.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

It is never early to start looking. Do not just allow your child to attend school in the same town. I recommend your child getting the experience of opening and making relationships by his/her self. Look at more than one school.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I wish there were meal plans with the local restaurants. The cafeteria is too small to handle the student popualation and more would participate in the meal plans if local restaurants were participating.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Some one who is extremely shy and does not like to participate in class. There are many activites always going on, and professors almost always ask questions or require presentations in front of the class.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

When choosing a college the student should first look at the school that best fits the degree they plan on attaining. This first step should give the student a short list of colleges. Then the student should look at the price of attending the prior mentioned colleges, this cost analysis allows the see which college is the best buy. The final deciding factor should always be a visit to the college, in which the student gets a feel of the environment (social life, teachers, accommodations and the city in which the university is located) of the university. Thank you for your consideration for this scholarship Sincerely Jason Haraway

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Pick a field of interest and find out what the school has to offer in that field. Some schools are more oriented in certain departments than others. This does not mean that you have to pick your major yet. Think about if you would rather live at home or on campus. Visit the school and decide if it has a good learning atmosphere as well as suitable campus housing. Keep in mind that the total costs should be affordable and that you should be able to pay off any student loans on time. Also see if the school accommodates all of your needs such as a special diet or any disabilities. Apply to more than one school of your interest and see how much money in scholarship each school is willing to award. Do not pick a school just because of your favorite football team, unless you are planning to play on the team and know that you will make the tryouts. Education comes before athletics. Finally analyze all of the criteria and pick a school that will guarantee you the best experience and a valuable degree.

What's unique about your campus?

UAH is a fairly small school, so everyone knows each other and the students can get more attention and help from the faculty.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Pick what is best for you. Do not do what your friends are doing. You will make new friends, friends that will last a long time. The way to be the most involved is to go Greek. Be in the sorority or fraternity that you fit into. Your sisters or brothers will be your life long friends, and most likely be in your wedding. Enjoy it, do not rush through it. Take it all in and grow because of it.

I suggest that in order to find the right college for a particular student, the student and parents research several different schools in depth. The colleges that they look at should definatley have acredited programs in the student's desired major. This ensures that the student will be taken seriously in the modern competative job market. The size of the school should also be taken into consideration when choosing the right college. It is easy for professor to overlook a particular student in a large school, so if a student needs help academically, a smaller school is probably better. Another thing that should be taken into consideration is the social activities that students engage in at the campus. If most people at the campus have similiar social intrests as the prospective student it is more likely that the student will make friends easier. Making good friends quickly is very important and can make the difficult transition to college alot easier. Ofcourse these are just a few of the issues that a person faces when choosing a college, but these are the issues that I feel have the most impact on a student's success at a particular university.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish that I had known more about what people did around the campus for fun. Students here often just enjoy playing video games and watching tv. I like going hiking and camping.
