University of Arizona Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Anna

The UA is a large university. Therefore, it can have the disadvantages of a big school (large class sizes, etc...).

Sara

That tuition keeps increasing and how much more difficult certain majors are than others. It is difficult for individual students to pay for school, especially in the financial situation America is in today.

Megan

Recently it seems to be overcrowded.

Katharen

I think the worse thing about my school is that it seems too bad sometimes. If you do not have a major picked out or it is a larger college such as communication. You are just one of many, instead of beginning treated as an individual. This can make student feel very lost and unwanted so they transfer school.

Michael

It is too easy to fall through the cracks. The drop out rate is over 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, and it seems like the advisors don't care at all. Instead of trying to lower that number, they seem more intent on adding more and more students each year, and to let the mediocre students continue to drop out.

Kayla

The distribution of credits. Certain classes will be worth more credits than they should given the designation guidelines provided by the University. Other classes are worth only 1 credit when they take up more time than a 1 credit class should given the guidelines. This disadvantageously effects the course load taken by students each semester by not being an accurate estimation of time commitment.

Justin

The amount of resources (physical space, parking, academic advisors, faculty) is very disproportionate to the needs of students.

Eytal

the heat

Ambie

Not enough security as far as campus housing

Andra

The emphasis put on football and Greek life.

nikky

bad advising, large lecture classes, poor availability of courses

Stephanie

I think the worst thing about my school is the big size of the classes. Some of my really important major classes have hundreds of students and it gets hard to find some time to meet and discuss questions with my teacher. Sometimes there are so many people who come to office hours that you it's more of a waste to go and wait then to find some other form of help. It would be nice to have a better relationship with my teachers.

Amy

Being one face in a sea of a million faces can be good and bad- It is very easy to slip away from studies because there are so many students. Also, the gen eds that are offered do not really provide much of a "general education" rather classes that you just have to get through.

Lisa

I believe the worst thing about the campus is the violence and crime in the Tucson area. The University of Arizona is in a poor neighborhood of Tucson and many students have had peeping toms, break-ins, sexual harassment, and muggings. Although they are working on crime and safety all the time, the Tucson Police should be focusing more on crimes and violence in the area rather than giving students MIP's. It is more important to catch bad people than pull over kids walking home at night time.

Kyle

The worst thing about this school would have to be the test dates of some of the classes and how they schedule tests on the same day. I believe this should never happen because it is hard enough to complete the school work while studying for two tests on the same day.

Genevieve

The lack of originality, the school is full of clones wearing mini skirts and ugg boots. Basically, it's all sorority and fraternity kids, they are at college to party, not learn.

Kalli

I really love the University of Arizona, but since I'm from Chicago, Illinois, I would have to say the distance from home. Sometimes I get homesick and wish it was easier for me to see my family more often. I also don't like how Gen-Ed professors don't seem to engage the class and they often don't seem passionate about what they're teaching. Otherwise, I have nothing negative to say about the university.

Ramona

Well, I would say the worst thing about my school would be nothing as I have never had a complaint with their methods. I find the classes interesting and so far all the classes I have taken were very worth my time and money. Overall, I am happy with this school.

Evony

The worst thing that I encountered while attending this school was the level of difficulty when it came to getting into the classes you needed in order to obtain your degree. On many different occasions the class would fill up so quickly and it was hit or miss attending the first day of class to see if the professor would sign you in. It was definitely frustrating and quite a hassle.

Michael

They keep raising tution, and it is horrible. Espeically during a time like this when our economy is in no better shape than some of our wallets. Yet, as a matter of fact, UofA has planned to raise tuition yet again for the 2009 semester and forward. College students who are on loans, or have limited financial aid will be at risk, and students like me who are out of state will just end up paying more out of the a$$. The tuition increase for out of state is around 2,300. Yes, getting an education has a price...

Erin

The worst thing about my school would be the huge greek life, if you're not involved in a sorority or fraternity, then you are a minority. The greek like if also very harsh in choosing whom gets to be apart of which house. They also discriminate against who has how much money and what you're parents jobs are.

Itzel

The size of the classes tends to be as high as 500.

Anne

Some of the people are rude snobs.

gabriel

heat

Louis

The worst thing about the U of A is their financial situation: tuition continues to rise every semester astronomically while class sizes grow, professor availability diminishes, and TA appointments dwindle. Basically, they?re charging more and more, but giving back to their students less and less. This is very unfortunate as the school potentially has wonderful, notable, and diverse resources for their students, but rather than being implemented, the expression of these resources is being inhibited due to budgetary reasons.

Jamie

it's not in the best part of town.

Joseph

Underage drinking is major concern on the campus. It is frustrating to see young students struggle with their school work and home life because of subtance abuse. It also makes living on campus more difficult at times.

Melissa

The University of Arizona does provide students with numerous opportunities to further their studies. However, be prepared to seek them out on your own. The community on this campus is large and very competitive. If you want to get ahead of other students and be a better candidate for future careers, you can't be lazy and expect opportunities to find you. The same goes for classes. You need to be self-motivated and willing to dedicate a lot of time to studying. Since classes are so large here, your teachers will not help you unless you initiate.

Andi

Classes are too big, there are a lot of really terrible teachers, and the school promotes censorship of our newspaper.

Laatra

Freshman classes tend to get caught up with the social aspect of college!

Kyle

The walking distance to each class.

Jonathan

The Greek life on campus. The people involved tend to be apathetic towards their educations and goals, slidding by on thier parent's money and ambitions. Tucson citizens are given a bad name from these students.

Maya

I would consider class availability the worst thing about my school; its a constant battle to get the classes I need .

Ashley

The budget plan at the UA is continually revised but never responds to student concerns. Buildings are constructed with high-tech equipment, modern architecture and sophisticated landscaping while older buildings (where students spend the majority of time) fall apart and are in desperate need of renovation. To decrease the cost of expenditures on employee salaries, experienced faculty are laid-off while less experienced faculty such as graduate students take their places. The majority of my undergraduate classes were taught by graduate students who'd rather be writing their theses than teaching. The budget supports the school but not the students.

Katarina

The worst thing about my school is budget cuts. Although I assume the rest of the country is going through the same thing, I don't want it to happen to mine. We are getting less money for school, letting more kids into our school each year, cutting discussion sections for big lectures, increasing tuition fees, and many more.

Rob

The classes are someone what large in lower level clasees to weed freshmen out

Aileen

I really have no complaints about my school. Even though i think its expensive it is still one of the cheapest universities in the U.S. compared to other universities. I like the peope here and the teachers and faculty as well.

Robert

The worst thing about the University of Arizona is the parking situation. This university is rapidly growing and parking spots are not. If students can't find a place to park, they can not get to class, and if they can not get to class how can they succeed in college? This by far is the biggest problem at the University of Arizona.

Andrea

The way they spend their money. Because they do not put it in the classes or the studetns but into sports facilities.

Sirandon

The class size for freshman and Sophomore classes. Fndamentals are being tought and I believe that students would do better academicly if the had a better foundation.

CJ

Sometimes the lectures are too large.

Arlene

The worst part about the University of Arizona is that most gen ed courses are taught in huge lecture halls. It is easy to feel like you can miss class without gettin in trouble, and therefore missing important information. Many students feel lost among so many students and it is nearly impossible for a professor to know all 400 students. A lot of students miss the small class sizes of high school. The good news is that there are only very few lecture halls that allow that many students.

Julie

The worst thing about the University of Arizona is the fact that it feels that no one truly cares about their education. When sitting in a lecture hall of 600+ people, it feels no one actually wants to be there, including the professors. The professors are rarely enthusiastic about the topic they are teaching and the students even more rarely show any interest in the topics. This overall apathy towards education is contagious to an entire classroom or lecture hall of and takes away from the college experience.

April

Parking, Classes are too big

Kara

Walking from one class on one side of campus to a class on the opposite end in 100+ temperatures.
