University of California-Merced Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Precious

UC Merced is a great campus and the faculty is super nice and willing to help whenever you need it, but if I had to pick the worst thing about UCM, it would be the food. It's hard to explain unless you've had it. Of course, it isn't like they're feeding us garbage but you'd expect more seeing how you pay $35,000 to go here.

Erika

The worst thing about my school is it's lack of night life.

Jennifer

Not a problem with the school itself, but the city needs a little more college friendly/young adult friendly night life.

In my opinon, there are more good things than bad. One thing I would point out as being the worst thing about the University of California is the number of majors it has. I understand that it is still a relatively new campus and thus may not provide as many options. This will probably change in the future, however as of today, the degree options are relatively small compare to other campuses. Because there are not as many majors available, the options to explore many feilds are limited.

Samantha

In my personal opionion, the worst thing about my school is simply the location. It is really the only negative thing I can say about this University. The school is located in the middle of nowhere and is surrounded only by farm land. This location also offers unpleasant weather, however, there are always ways around the unpleasant parts and it is always possible to make the best of any situation.

Ashtin

The fact that it is new has its ups and downs, like it is unfortunate we do not have a legitamate sports program.

Nereyda

The school is in the middle of no where, it's really hard to get yourself anywhere without a car. The closest fast food place is probably 6-10 miles out.

Charley

Maybe a larger dinning commons, because the one that is currently there is not sufficient for the amount of kids. Moreover, the school did not provide enough housing for incoming freshman, forcing many people like myself to live off campus freshman year.

Noemi-Rocio

The worst thing about this school is that the on campus facilities such as the dinning commons are not off-campus friendly. They don't have a good food selection and students without a dinning plan get charged a lot more for food.

Amanda

That there are no teaching or medical majors.

Una

I suppose the worst thing is that my school is located "in the middle of no where." It is true that Merced is indeed a farmland. It is true that there isn't much to do outside of the campus. But future students should keep in mind that it's not what the school or the surroundings have to offer to you, it's what you choose to offer and how you choose to live the experience that really matters.

Jose

The worst thing about my school is the current grouping of classroom. The contrustion of the new buildings has not been completed yet, making the classrooms of bigger sizes very quick to fill up. Once the new buildings are completed then the classes will be assigned to their rightful room.

Jennifer

The worst thing about my school is sometimes also its best qualitiy and that is its rural location. It's rural location allows students to focus on their studies without worries of social activities. However, it's rural location is also hard on students because of the lack of social activities during the weekends when some students would like more to do.

maria

I would consider the fact that there is not much to do outside of campus.

Vinh

The worst thing about my school would be it's lack of interesting things to do. There aren't enough activities around here to keep the students occupied over the weekends, so a good amount of them end up going home a lot of the time.

michelle

It's too small. The students are immature and the new classes of freshmen tend to get even more immature.

Jacob

The worst thing is also the best thing. The school being so new means that is lacks the prestige of more established schools. UC Merced is no Harvard, but that is also what is so beautiful about it. It is like a newborn baby, it takes time before it gets bigger and makes a name for itself. However in the interim, the students that are here flourish with the programs available. Despite there are no sports teams, there is a comradery here that is unrivaled, and only made possible due to its size.

Travis

The teachers that are moving in and out have never taught before. This is unfair to the students because they get lower grades for a teacher that teaches the coarse material poorly.

Jessica

not enough student!

Raul

Bad weather and in the middle of nowhere. It is also far apart from the grocery store, good restaurants, theathres, etc. Their transportation service also sucks.

Maggie

It is difficult to meet people outside of class.
