"UCR is never anyone's first choice." That is what my peer mentor told me during a one-on-one meeting with her. It might sound disheartening or rude, but it's not necessarily untrue. I know it was true for me. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to go to a UC, but as a child I would dream of UCLA or UC Berkeley. While it was not my first choice, I wasn't devastated to be attending UCR; in fact, I chose it over other schools that I had previously ranked higher in my 'List of College's I Want To Attend'. I am so glad that I decided to go to UCR because I am truly having the best college experience that I could have ever asked for. Like most freshman, I was terrified of what my professors would be like and obsessively looked them up on ratemyproffesors.com to try to ensure that I would get the best education I could. I did not find all of them, but I had nothing to worry about. All of my professors were very kind and patient and always available during office hours if anyone ever had questions on any of the materials we needed. I even had great experiences with my TA's, who could relate to my struggles a bit more due to them still being students themselves. Going to their office hours, especially my math TA, helped me understand the what was going on in class a lot better. The university is also filled with resources that can help improve anyone's college experience. Some examples include the tutoring at the ARC that really helped me in my math class, the 'Coffee Chats' with experienced individuals that really got me thinking about my future in business, and the destressing activities during finals week that made dealing with the end of the quarter more manageable. As for the more fun things, I live in the dorms, more specifically Aberdeen-Inverness, and it is honestly one of the best decisions I have made. All the dorms have their up's and down's and are all very comfortable, but I am biased towards A-I. It has it's own residential diner, which is very convenient, the gym is right across the street, it is a very social place, so it is easy to make friends, and it is the closest to the actual campus, which makes it very difficult to be late to class. The food at the residential restaurants and at the restaurants on campus are all very tasty and there is a lot of variety so it is difficult to get tired of it. However, if you do, there are plenty of delicious places to get food in the University Village, which is a very short walk from campus. Even better, there are plenty of great places to eat in the Downtown Riverside and Moreno Valley areas, all of which are short bus rides away. The bus is free for all UCR students to use, which is great for first-year dormers, as they are not allowed to have a car. All in all, I think that UCR unfairly gets a bad reputation. The education, the resources, the housing, and the social life are all great, from what I have seen, and I am so excited to spend three more years at my university.

I find the University of California to be a great place of higher education. I am not expecting an expensive campus (it's a state school after all) or any "big name" professors, and even with our those things UCR does impress me. The students on campus are INCREDIBLY polite, almost to the point I felt that striking up a conversation was incredibly easy. Clubs and Organizations are fun, but never feel oppressive with their commitments. Overall, find UCR highly enjoyable.

I personally live in one of the living-learning community that is offered on campus and it has helped me a lot on the transition as I was provided a community that is supportive and trustworthy and I font truly ever feel alone. there are also a variety of mentor programs to participate in your first year and even as a transfer which surrounds you with a very inspiring community. The staff on campus are often available and are even willing to make extra office hours that work around your already busy schedule. Overall it has been an amazing experience for me and I'm so glad I chose to become a Highlander.

University of California Riverside is a diverse campus that offers many multi-cultural organizations and outstanding academic opportunities. Students feel a part of a whole while on campus, rather than feeling just as an individual in a large crowd. With it's welcoming environment, UCR is a great university for any individual of any background.

UCR is a very open community. Anyone is accepted on the campus and there are a lot of clubs, organizations, etc. that are eager to have students be involved in. The class size isn't too drastic and the professors are available and helpful. Overall, the environment isn't too bad to be in.

This school appears as a satisfactory place to learn even though some sizes of the classes might intimidate. The food is definitely an upgrade over high school and the sports are neat.

Initially when I was accepted into the program I didn't know what to expect, because not many people liked the area and the things to do around town. I on the other hand loved living in Riverside. The community was great and it was definitely a step up from where I grew up. I loved living in the dorms and being able to meet new people. I joined a club during my second year there and I was able to land a job soon after because they helped me with my resume and gave me advice on how to have a successful interview. Overall a great school, and I will always recommend applying there.

Riverside is a beautiful campus and is surrounded by overall great people. The atmosphere and is great and the staff does whatever it can to make it the best campus possible. While the classes you want may be hard to get, it's a public school, it is no different anywhere else. It's an incredible experience and to anyone that is interested in going there, it's a great choice.

UC Riverside is known for it’s diversity and welcoming atmosphere. As soon as you step foot on campus you will feel welcome and at home. The professors are always available through their office hours and are willing to reschedule if you cannot make it. There’s a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities you can join. I have struggled to find classes because there are many students at this university but I still believe the academics are great. There are also many research labs you can work at to gain experience which is definitely a plus!

What is your overall opinion of this school?

I honestly really love going to school at UCR. There's so much diversity and everyone I've met is very sweet. Although Riverside itself is pretty sketchy, the campus isn't like that and is really beautiful in my opinion. Most of the teachers are great and I've grown to love English even more than I did in high school. I'm not that active in clubs and student life activities, so I wouldn't know that stuff, but there is lots to get involved with on campus for sure. I think that most people just forget about this UC, but I think we have so much to offer then what people would expect. UC Riverside has made a lot of positive changes to the campus that other UC's have been influenced to do such as us being the first UC to even have an LGBTQ+ center as well as supporting and representing other communities at our school and providing a safe environment. I love it at UCR for everything it has given me and I hope others feel the same.
