What sets the University of California, Riverside apart from the other UC's is its diversity. There is no stereotypical student at this university because it is one of the leading campuses in the nation when it comes to diversity. It is the most diverse university out of the 10 esteemed campuses in the UC system, and it is the fifth most diverse university in the nation. Every type of personality can be found at UCR. There are fraternity students, brainiacs, athletes, fashionistas, artists and most generally, your average, down to earth, friend. If a stereotype must be chosen, I would have to choose simply that, because the students at UCR are incredibly inviting, understanding, and affable.

More than likely, if prospective students were rejected from other campuses and did not like UC Riverside, they would enroll in state universities or community colleges and transfer in order to save money. After all, tuition is skyrocketing and if UCR had no deeming qualities of its own, even those rejected from other schools would not come here. What amazes me about UCR is that a significant amount of the student population are the first in their entire family to ever go to college. It is one of the things that I am most proud about our campus. In fact, I have a good amount of friends who were accepted to schools such as UCSD but essentially chose UCR. I have even met people who went to UCLA for a year or two and decided that they didn't like it, came to UCR and loved it. I won't say that most people here love the school because we really don't have much school pride but the stereotypes that are generated are definitely not as true as they sound.

Before having entered this school I heard talk that it was a "party school" and was heavily attended by sorority and frat members. Ethnically, I have also heard this school being labeled for its high population of Asian students. Also, as a school in the UC system, it seems UCR has a common reputation of being "easy to get into", meaning most people think of it as less prestigious academically than schools like Irvine or Berkely.

It is a common misconception that all people who go to the University of California at Riverside go as a last resort. In actuality, the University is prestigious in it's own right and lives up to the UC standard. Because Riverside has 8 other UC schools in California to compete with, there has to be stereotypes of each school, and for Riverside I most often hear: "All they do is party." While I do see that the college kids know how to have fun socially, not all of us party! There are frat parties, rush parties, and kickbacks here and there, but there is a clear distinction of people who do like to party, those who are well-balanced, and those who simply do not. There are some really good students here who take leadership positions and get those straight A's but are often hidden due to Riverside's reputation. While this stereotype is partially accurate, I would say there is a very good balance of good students as well.

Arveen

That they went here because they got rejected from other UC campuses. It's partially true but there are several capable students here that chose Riverside for commuting reasons as well as the scholarships they offer to students with potential.

UC Riverside is infamous for being know as the home of the "UC Rejects," Prospective undergraduate students have the notion that UCR students are unknowledgeable and ill-prepared for the UC system. The fact of the matter is that this is a complete fallacy. UC Riverside is full of the nation's brightest and most capable individuals. Oftentimes UCR gets a bad rap, but that negative repuation is neither warranted nor true. UCR is full of smart and highly educated individuals who will go on to graduate and make a difference in their communities.

Brittany

I feel like this couldn't be LESS true. Many of the students here work just as hard and harder as the students on other UC campuses. People greatly under estimate the offerings of UCR. We have students of all shapes and sizes, ethnicities and backgrounds. No matter what university you attend, your experience is what you make it. I couldn't be more proud to be a highlander.

Giulliana

The stereotype at our school is that students are not all that smart. However, I have found that to be the total opposite!

Nolan

The stereotype of UCR students are that (most of )the students are failures who couldn't get into higher ranked UCs such as san diego or los angeles. This is not true because a lot of us picked UCR for location convenience, major compatability, scholarships/grants, family etc.

Albert

UC Rejects. Because everyone that decided to go the UCR got rejected from every other school. Which is somewhat true in my case haha. The stereotype is somewhat accurate but not entirely. I've met people that got accepted into top tier schools like UCLA, Berkeley, and Stanford(rare). But due to financial struggles or residence issues, they decided to go here. I mean, there are a LOT of brilliant people at this school. The underlying meaning behind the stereotype isn't true.

Albert

As a high school student, many seniors of our graduating class wanted to get into top-tier universities such as UC Berkeley and UCLA. UCR was always viewed as the “dumb school” by most high school students and this created a negative stereotype for our campus. There was this constant perception surrounding my high school that UCR students were forced to attend UCR because they didn’t get accepted elsewhere. Hence, the name “UC Rejects” was born. In some sense, this is true because I for one didn’t get accepted into any UC besides UCR. So I guess it’s true that I was “forced” to attend UCR. However, many students at our campus chose to attend UCR because of their accessibility of financial aid. UCR students receive the highest amount of financial aid compared any other UC campus. The demographic of our school consists of the most low-income students. And our return to aid for fees and tuition is at 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}. Other UC campuses portion only 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of their fees for financial aid. Therefore, there is a larger pool of money for financial compensation that our university can grant. From my experiences of talking to students on our campus, many that got accepted into well-known universities such UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSB, UCSD, etc., made the decision to attend UCR because of the amount of financial grant the school offered. The UC Rejects stereotype is accurate to a certain degree, but people who hold that perception don’t realize how great UCR actually is.

James

Many people believe that everyone at school parties, does weed, and that we are the rejects of the UC system, but there are many other people who do not go to parties, do not do drugs, and work hard in school. There are many more "nerds" than people think; there are actually many bright students at this school who got into other UC's because they would prefer to be at the top of their class rather than the bottom of a higher tier an because UCR provides more financial aid to assist students in furthering their higher level education.

Theres a stereotype that the majority of students at UCR is Asian -It is not! Although in the past it was estimated that about 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students were Asian at UCR, that is incorrect. Our campus is extremely diverse with all kinds of ethnic clubs! I myself don't want to separate myself by my ethnic background, but its comforting for some to actually be around their own kind when in a foreign school away from home.
