This school does not prepare its students for this failing economy and outsourcing of jobs. When a school says it offers an education, UCSC exlusively means it. Unless you're in a BS major, there is nothing practical here. The social life on campus is also so convenient, that people forget what relationship investment is. There is a lot of partying, a lot of talking but very little listening. I think that this reflects more poorly on the students than the school itself. And UCSC has a high depression, dropout and substance abuse rate. Enough said.

There's not that much racial diversity.

The fact that it is consided to be a hippie or druggie school when it has just the same opportunities as others.

Not enough resources and emphasis on the social sciences.

i was in a crowded major - i often attended large lecture halls and received little personal attention from professors (due to the large number of students). it was difficult to build relationships with professors which made it hard to secure letters of recommendation for graduate school.

the alternate lifestyle seems to be the predominate lifestyle, people here seem not to really go with mainstream america. I thought it would be cool when i moved here initially but it grew on me in a negative way.

it is expensive

The worst thing is the lack of diversity because there aren't as many ways to get to know other cultures as at other universities.

There is too much emphasis on getting the students out once they are a part of the UC system. The class sizes and availability leave much to be desired in order to provide a high quality education. Too much is left up to the student to figure out, often leaving them in the dark until it is too late, there were advisers, yet they were not as helpful as I feel they should have been.

that there are not enough film production classes

The students/professors are so open-minded, it's like their brains have fallen out! I'm Christian, so it seems like most people are either atheist/pagan/other, and they profess to be tolerant and open-minded, but not towards us!

It is too difficult to get into the classes you want due to lack of space. They need to make enrollment easier.

transportation

The worst thing is the availability of classes for someone when they are close to the end of their major. Certain departments only offer a few classes a quarter so you feel that you are taking a lot of fluff classes waiting for your class to show up on the schedule.

The fact that the classes are always large and its hard to meet new people in your feild of study

The worst thing about my school is just the lack of interest in helping out students who really need financial help. Other than that, my school is on top of environmental issues, is cultural diverse and accepting to all kinds of peole, and is currently working harder to expand its range.
