Phone home as often as you want! As long as your parent/guardian is willing to accept the call (i can't imagine why they wouldn't) why not? Personally, I probably called my mom at least once a week freshman year just to check in. She wanted to know I wasn't getting into trouble or anything like that. Even as a Junior she still feels the need to ask me about my grades to make sure I am staying on top of my school work. The conversations do not have to be hours long, but If you want to call and say heyy mom/dad you wont believe what happened today!? This class is so boring etc i say go for it.....
In my opinion it isn't because I phone home at least once a day just because my mom and I are really close and your parents feel at ease and don't worry as much when you phone them.
