What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Madisen

The stereotypes of CU Boulder students is that we are hippies, and stoners. With 30,000 people on campus, there are so many different types of students. Since freshman year, I have yet to notice a big amount of hippies around campus. The other stereotype, stoners, is interesting because I think we get that name because of the 4/20 event held on campus every year. An interesting fact about that is the majority of people who come to that gathering are people from all around the united states. It is more a bunch of random people then all CU students.

Alexandra

The most common stereotype of CU students is that we are liberal, pot smoking hippies. Another stereotype is that everyone is super athletic, fit, and leads and vegan lifestyle.

Most people think that students at CU and people who live in Boulder are all peace-loving, freedom-fighting, pot-smoking hippies. To me, the hippy that people think of is someone who believes in equal opportunities for everyone, fighting the law whenever it restricts freedom of speech, celebrating the body and following one's spirit, and wearing clothing to specifically not conform to governmental ideas of "normal". I'd say a large handful of students fit this description, but a majority of the students are not extremist. As students finding our identity, we fight for what we believe in and embrace the freedom away from home; however, we do not all become active participants in social movements or wear flowery skirts and tye-dye shirts.

At the University of Colorado at Boulder the overarching stereotype is that everyone here smokes pot and are extreme liberals. This stereotype however is NOT accurate. The people in Boulder represent a wide range of cultures, minorities, political viewpoints and social class levels. The hippie stereotype is often backed up by the annual 4/20 celebration, however most of the people who participate in that event are not students who attend CU; they come from out of town. At CU there are multiple types of Buffaloes who attend. You will come across your dedicated Greek students, Engineers, business savvy pre-professionals, athletes, hard-core republicans and many more. So whatever you like to do, you are sure to find the group that is right for you.

That we're all granola-eating, birkenstock-wearing, dread-headed, pot-smoking, hippy liberals! OR!! You're that california babe that only wears spandex, uggs, big sunglasses, and designers totes that spends all of daddy's money on clothes and drugs..... and only talks to/dates frat guys.

Ryan

That it is full of hippies and it's liberal.

Ryan

Boulder is typically seen as a left-leaning, casual, eco-friendly sort of town full of middle-class yuppies and a disproportionate amount of wealthy college students. CU Boulder has a huge amount of out of state students, most of whom are probably from upper class families (most likely from California). I've encountered a ton of these party hungry, "cookie cutter", parents-are-paying-for-my-education, jaded college student clones, but with such a large student body, there's also a significant chunk of just about any other demographic you can imagine.

KJ

Some stereotypes about Boulder that i have heard before are that it is a place with many Hippies, outdoorsy people, and those who have stayed around the University setting. Boulder students are known for being open-minded, loving the outdoors, and big partiers.

Ashley

Brittany

major party school

Quinn

Our stereotypes would be liberal, nature loving, pot-loving law-breaking Hippies in a party school standing next to a party neighborhood, "the Hill". (... at least that's what I heard about Boulder before I came here). I've also heard of other things like there is a mountain range right next to the school and people can ski or board there, and Boulder is a different country within Colorado with different rule like pedestrians have the absolute right of way.

Travis

It's cold and snows all the time since we're in Colorado. And also that everyone's a hippe out here.

Alex

The stereotype that we're a huge party school is true, you can always find a party any night of the week, but you don't have to be a part of that scene if you don't want to! There's so much great stuff to do around campus and around the town of Boulder that it's easy to avoid the party scene when you want/need to. Most people think that Boulder is a hippie town with a lot of pot-smoking and partying. Some people think all the girls are the same around here with their California beach blond hair, UGG boots and fur hooded coats. The weekends start on Thursday night, not Friday.

Kelsey

laid back, smoke pot, like to party, athletic, outdoorsy

Tim

That we get high or drunk all the time with our hippie friends.

Abby

We have a few stereotypes. One, is that we are a huge party school. Four years ago, we were rated the number one party school in the nation. Another stereotype is that Boulder has a lot of hippies - which is hilarious because it's not true. I would say another stereotype we have is that CU is mostly California kids "university of California" is the joke.

Whitney

Students at Boulder are always partying, drinking, never studying, and growing out their hair.
