University of Connecticut Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Emily

My classmates are both motivated academically and socially; they have an interest in the world around them and their place in it.

Michael

A real mix, you can find the loser druggies, or the engaged academics, and all points in between, at the University of Connecticut.

Alyssa

My classmates are interested in learning and are scientifically inclined.

Sarah

I am a Physics major, and I am also in the Honors program. If I had to describe my classmates in one word, I would say "MALE." As a girl, after the Fall 08 semester I will be the only undergraduate female in the department. The Physics department is great, though - they do everything they can with the resources/funding they are given, and they really care about their major students. Sometimes, my classmates are unmotivated and skip lectures and labs, but for the most part (often with some encouragement from me) they come to classes, work together, and succeed.

Molly

They are hard-working and supportive and smart.

Gregory

Many of my classmates are very intelligent but do not work as hard as they can.

Michael

My classmates are self-interested individuals that care only about their grades.

Vanessa

Classmates are friendly, helpful , open to new ideas and willing to learn.

Reed

Very friendly, accepting, inviting, and always looking for fun things to do and joyful ways to spend time with eachother.

Jessica

My classmates are hardworking, determined, helpful and most importantly, my friends.

Mary

My classmates vary from diverse and accepting to ignorant and unknowledgeable; it's all who you meet.

Alicia

Energized and ready to learn. He is eager to learn what the professor has to offer him.

Moya

My classmates are usually open minded and ready to learn.

Alison

We all come from very different backgrounds.

Christopher

Fairly hard working, but still like to hang out and have fun.

Micah

my classmates are enthusiastic, fun, and very friendly.

Mary

My classmates are focused, impatient, and smart.

Laura

Because i'm a Liberal Arts major, my classmates are all extremely different in their viewpoints, skin color and backgrounds. People tend to get shy in smaller classes so most of the time it's sort of awkward unless you make it your intention to talk to someone sitting next to you or around you. A lot of people tend to cling to their friends that they already know, so it can be hard to meet people through classes unless the teacher does some sort of classroom assignment where you have to sit face-to-face with someone.

Jonathan

The are very diverse in their way of thinking, and are willing offer their views of event, situations, and/or class subjects.

Anthony

My class mates are focused in the class room and in their studies but when it comes time to have fun we are second to none.

Kate

A fun group of people who love what they do.

Ellen

My classmates are very bright and come from all backgrounds which creates a wonderful mix of students.

AJ

pretty good groups on campus. alot of cultural organizations as well as social, religious, and professional groups. The body of students is pretty diverse. Alot of ct white kids but also large population of diverse ethnic groups and also hot girls (especially when it gets warm out).

Jenn

LGBT community is there and active making money is a huge incentive to be there drinking is huge

Alex

UConn is very diverse and everyone bonds with everyone.

Jessica

I have had experiences with those outside of my own race, mostly through classes, and some I am still friends with today. This past year, I also had roommates who were lesbians, and it was one of my favorite living situations since I have been here. They were a great relief and very accepting of me, listening to the reasons which led me to randomly live in the same apartment as them (previous roommates proved to be the worst people to live with). I felt very comfortable living with them. I've become great friends with them and I wish I could live with them next year. I find that UConn is the best place to interact with students different from yourself. It has led me to learn a lot about myself as well other people around me.

Brett

Antisocial people would feel out of place. There's lots of diversity. Some cliques form quickly, but most people try to mix it up. Most students are from Connecticut. Most aren't politically aware. (I'm not, sadly.) The great majority are left.

Dave

i dont think that anyone would feel out of place at UCONN because it is very diverse, most kids are from connecticut

Annie

I think most people would fit in well on campus. It is very open and the people very accepting. Kids usually wear sweats to class and it is a very relaxed environment.

kat

the uconn student body is pretty chill. dont be ashamed to wear sweatpants and flip-flops to your classes. most uconn students are from ct for obvious reasons, but you can definitely find students from all over the us, and the world for that matter.

Amy

I think very quiet students would feel out of place at UConn because it is a very loud and spirited community and if that's not your thing- avoid UConn at all costs. Also, as an out-of-state student going to UConn, I felt very out of place in the beginning because most students that go there are from Connecticut. Eventually I started to smooth things over and just act like it didn't matter.

Julie

I would say for the most part, UConn is made up of middle-class white students, but there is a wide-range of cultures, ethnicities, and religions. The cultural centers are popular on campus.

Bethany

There isnt a lot of diversity on campus, and if there is I have not noticed it. About 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} are kids from CT, from wealthier backgrounds. The 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of us from out of state seem to blend in, but when you meet someone from your home state, somehow there seems to be a better bond.

Diane

There are groups on campus for pretty much everything except white straight males, but they can always join other clubs if they need to feel included.

Pete

Nothing too major to say here.

Hunter

Basically UConn is all white people. Yes there are minorities, but when you look around you will mostly see white people. The minorities and LGBT communities all have cultural centers which is great because it causes us not to feel overwhelmed, and disconnected. However, different races tend to interact. Most of UConn students are from Connecticut.

Michele

UConn's student body is pretty diverse. There are many cultural centers located in the student union, for one thing, as well as an international center. (Insert shameless plug for the UConn Italian Club here!!) Sure, there are a lot of small-town kids here, but by senior year they learn all about diversity and other cultures. They admit it takes a little getting used to. It never fazed me, though, because I'm from a fairly large city.

Jess

A lot of different types of groups in my years emerging at UConn, everyone intereacts but Greek life tends to stick to itself, high school-ish

Melissa

On campus there is something for everyone, you just have to look for it and if there is nothing that pertains to your lifestyle or background you can always propose a new club or group to the student government board. when going to class the most common thing is sweatpants and a hoodie. there is no need to get dressed up to go to lecture, i laugh at those people because it is apparent they are superficial. Students are from all over the world with all different financial and social backgrounds. most upper-middle and middle class students attend but there are students from the other economic classes.

Victoria

I work in the Health Education Office at UConn. I have found that UConn has a very diverse and accepting population. Groups such as Sexperts, the Rainbow Center, and other cultural centers encourage acceptance of diverse individuals and give all students a place to feel at home. I do not believe any type of student would feel out of place at UConn. There are groups for many different lifestyles and the student body is pretty accepting in my opinion.

Jenn

everyone is an ignorant liberal. no one has a real reason for liking who they like. everyone is from rich connecticut or mass. they also have never experienced anything outside of the tri-state area.

Blake

The student body is mostly white, upper-middle class, privileged CT residents. But there is some racial/ethnic diversity and there are some out-of-staters, mostly from NJ and NY. There are African-American, Puerto-Rican/Latin-American, LGBT, Asian-American, and Women's cultural centers so everyone has a place to go if they want. The stereotypical UConn dress is very preppy, girls wear Uggs, North Face jackets, designer jeans and Abercrombie/Hollister. Guys wear the male equivalent. Everyone owns at least one item of clothing that says UConn on it. By and large I wouldn't describe the population of UConn as a bunch of intellectuals. They're average kids who prefer keeping up with NCAA tournaments to being informed on presidential debates. As a whole I'd call CT kind of a right-wing state, but by virtue of the fact that UConn is a college it has more lefties out of those who are actually aware and active. As far as future hopes and ambitions, everyone hopes to make money, but UConn doesn't offer as much job security as other more prestigious colleges. The economy sucks and will continue to suck anyway.

Renee

Most people are from Connecticut. It is a predominately white campus. When you walk outside, you see northfaces and uggs. Everyone looks the same, but there are people that stand out. I know people that complain of prejudice.

Emily

There are so many groups for cultural, ethnic, and social differences that I dont think I'd be able to count them, but they all seem fair and respectful in my experiences. In terms of what people wear, I see a lot of people with North Face jackets and vests on, but in such a large school there are still a bunch of people who dont wear those things at all. Quite honestly, the vast majority of people dress for comfort because they're going to be spending all day walking around campus. Most UConn students are from in-state, but there's still a good chunk of out-of-state kids. What I didn't notice was a large discrepancy in financial backgrounds, which I found comforting. There is a decent level of political activity on campus, but again, due to the size of the student body you always have some people who are really active, others who aren't, and those who make an effort but aren't intense about it.

Rachael

UConn is one of the most diverse places I have ever been, because when I walk into the dining hall and glance over four tables, I rarely see or hear two similar people. From majors to ethnicity to musical taste, everyone has something different to offer, and we all gravitate toward each other.

Sean

The majority of uconn students are from CT, with a speckling of students from NY, MA and NJ. There is not a lot of personality diversity at uconn. If you don't party/drink you will really have a hard time finding a place at uconn amongst people you can really connect to.

Megan

There are so many groups on campus that someone could find themselves joining. There's a strong LGBT presence as well as different cultural centers for all sorts of ethnicities. There are clubs and fraternities/sororities to join, study groups you could form, or just friends you could make from classes that you take. The only kind of student that would feel left out at UConn would be the student that stays in their room and makes an effort not to interact with the people outside.

Lauren

very friendly people. not stuck up active campus

Rory

There is a good mixing of student's races, sexual preference, and religious state. When it comes to money, sometimes its clear the rich kids stay with the rich and the not rich kids are with the non rich. Most students would considered themselves liberal, but if they were asked about politics, they wouldnt be able to answer questions about why they are liberal...mostly just "Bush sucks, thats why." Most of the students are from Connecticut for sure.

Stephanie

Most students wear whatever they feel comfortable in to class. On any day you can see people dressed up or just wearing pjs or sweats. It all depends on the person.
