What are your classes like?

Katie

At Uconn Stamford my classes are unique and personal. Most of my classes have a lot of participation but I have also had lecture courses. On average, I would estimate, there are about 50 students per class so they aren't too big and impersonal but you still have the opportunity to stay in the background.

Be prepared for large, impersonal lectures for the first two years. Most classes have a discussion component, but they are usually run by TAs who don't have a clue, or don't care.

All of my classes this semester are great, especially my classes in my majors. One of my classes is in a very large lecture hall, but I'm converting the class to honors credits, so I meet with that professor weekly one-on-one to continue honors work in the course outside of lectures. My other large lecture class also has a discussion section once a week, where I'm in a class with only 15 other people and a Teaching Assistant. In discussion, we go more in depth about the topics we're discussing in lectures. My other three classes are much smaller classes. Two of them are honors courses, which is why they are smaller, 18-student courses. My other class that is small, with about 20 students, is a non-honors course. It's my current favorite class, and is a Sociology/Human Rights 3000-level course. One of my professors from last semester suggested I take the course, and I'm more than grateful that she advised that! Classes at UConn vary in size, but no matter what, the professors are more than willing to meet with you outside of class to help you understand the material better!!
