What are the academics like at your school?

Danielle

Class sizes, especially for the first couple years are pretty big. Despite this, you can always go to the professor if you need help. They may not know your first name, but this does not decrease their desire to help you learn. There are great places to study on campus. The library, Student Union, and cafes are great, to name a few.

My largest class has been over 250 and my smallest about 8...it really depends what class you take and how often it is offered. I would say about 5{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of my professors have known my name during my time here...not many TA's (teaching assistants) knew my name in discussion sections either...It is incredibly optional whether you want to go to class or not but as i have learned the more often you go the better. I do have to study a lot outside of class...basically every night for a few hours...everyone here seems to either be really smart or an athlete...I'm an HDFS major (Human Development and Family Studies) and the classes I've taken thus far have interesting titles but seem to be lackluster in content. The most interesting class I've taken here is yoga and the least is probably history or english. I think UConn's academic requirements for graduation are incredibly fair and pretty easy to accomplish in 4 years if you have your act together. I feel like I have learned a good amount but I'm not entirely sure if I'm ready to translate all that into a career...but these days getting your undergrad is like getting a high school diploma...so do good as an undergrad then shoot for grad school. UConn is a good place to do that.

Classes are pretty big. There's a wide range of students academically. You get those that study all the time and those that party all the time.

Shannon

UConn is a huge school with a lot of people, but the classes definitely do not suffer because of this. I am an English major and all of my English classes have never exceeded 30 students. Professors in these smaller classes learn your name & are really easy to meet up with if one has questions about anything. There are bigger lectures too some with about 300 students. In classes like this the professor obviously does not learn everyone's name. Although the classes are really big the professors still have office hours to meet with students, so that is not an issue. UConn has really great classrooms too that can handle the large class size with no problem. There are televisons that make it easy for everyone to see the lecture notes no matter where they are sitting. I do see some students speaking with professors outside of class & it is a common thing for students to meet up out of class to study or for group work in various places around campus, like the library.

Jesse

Do Uconn students study a lot? Yes...and no. Depending on major, involvment in extra-curriculars and social life, among other things, a student night have sleep with their books next to their heads-osmosis!!!! in our dreams;)- or scan a page before an exam. As an engineering major, I have to study constantly if I want to get the grades I need to be successful after school. In fact, many people in different majors have told me how much they look up to engineering majors because of our hard work and dedication. Other majors may be more fun, but engineering majors definetly get the respect on this campus.

Professors will know your name if you go to office hours, if you dont, then they have no way of knowing you. You also have Teachers aides in discussion sections and they will most likely know you because they are they ones that grade you and often times attendence and participation play a role in your grade for the discussion portion of class. My favorite class was sociology 107 because it was easy, yet interesting, and I got a W class overwith. My least favorite class is economics because it is very challanging and you not only have to memorize concepts, but you need to understand them. The Teachers aides in economics are also generally foreign so they tend to be difficult to understand. I study all day everyday, with the exception of a few hours here and there and weekend nights.

marisa

We study all the time. Professor take the time to know you and memorize you r name.

Andy

There are a wide variety of class settings here. Some are huge lecture halls where the professor will never know who you are and there is no class participation which isn't always good if the class is difficult and you need extra help understanding the material because then you would have to go to office hours which I find uncomfortable and inconvenient. There are also small classes of up to 30 students where there is class participation and the teacher would actually recognize you and know your name.

Chelsea

Most professors really do care about their students. If you show interest in a class or subject, professors will really love you for it. The most unique class I've taken was called Walden: A History. It was a small, discussion based class, with a field trip to Walden Pond and no exams.

Natasha

My professors don't ever know my name especially in lectures or in normal gen ed's. One exception are the art, because they want to learn about their students. They go through the trouble of learn ones strengths and weaknesses, and help students learn how to become better artists. I enjoy having intellectual conversations. I was always like that with my family. But most the people in Uconn really don't have useful conversations. It's mostly a conversation on the phone to a parent wondering why they can't wire them money for a new pair of hideous UGG boots....UGG....the name says it all people. I am not a creep so I dont really spend time with teachers. Uconns academic requirement is kind of pointless. When will I ever need to use the Borda's method in an art field. I rather get trained exclusively to my major, and try other classes IF i wanted to. and im sure science will never be involved with my field...*shiver*....

I currently have smaller classes and in those my professor knows my name. I enjoy accounting 200 because my ta is humorous and helpful during office hours. I also like my greek leadership class which is taught by students and Greek administrators. Students study a great deal. Some majors are certainly more difficult and time consuming, but all my friends across their majors study frequently. Class participation is frequent in small classes, not so much in lectures. I am a recently declared finance major and will start my finance courses in the fall as a junior. While I am done with my gen eds I cannot take finance classes because I do not have junior standing, and this is frustrating because i am currently taking classes I do not need to take. I go to office hours for some classes, but often email my teachers with questions. For the most part they reply quickly and are helpful. The general requirements are for the most part interesting or helpful classes. For example I am taking public speaking which I think will help me in the future.

Megan

I think in small classes the professors do a good job of remembering students names, but outside of that, not so much. Class participation is generally a large portion of a students grade.

Maureen

In your basic gen eds, the classes range from 100 to 300 students. It is kind of intiminating but no one will ever know your name and it is a good time to d the daily crossword and sudoku. Once in your sophomore or junior year, as you get more in depth in your major, the classes become smaller and the professors definatly know your name. They actually care what you have to say and are very accesible and want to help you succeed. I have never had a problem with getting a professor write a recommendation for me. I am a human development and family studies major. It is geared towards people who want to work with children or in social services. There is a wide variety of internships available on and off campus. One of the best classes to take is human sexuality with Marysol. However, a fun class, not in my major, was floral art. It is offered through the plant science department. It is really easy and you get to take home different floral arrangements every week.

Justin

UConn is stressing acadameics more and more every year and the classes and work load are getting tougher. I on my own do not study every day like i have heard is necessary but a lot of out of class time, effort, and work is necessary to do well in all of your classes. I have not had any business course classes, just Gen Ed requirements and some have been nice classes, others have been very boring and uninteresting.

Rory

Classes are big for the most part, I've probably actually spoken to maybe a couple professors in 4 years.

Mary

Classes are really large exspecially when you are a freshman and sophmore since you're taking gen ed's. But as you take classes relevant to your major it get's better.

Tori

Some of my professors know my name, others don't bother, and some classes are so big (100+) that it's impossible. My favorite class is a small honors English class where I have the opportunity to learn a lot because I am one of about 15 students. Students study depending on what classes they're taking- Honors students study a lot but to others it doesn't seem as important. Class participation and intellectual conversations depend on if you're an honors student or not. If not, participation and intellectuality are unlikely. My department, theater, is very close-knit- The professors are close to the students and like to make sure they're doing well in their classes. Academic requirements are easy to fulfill and make students well-rounded. Definitely geared towards getting a job, if anything.

Jody

The classes are completly dependent on your major. I am doing engineering and I know my friends over at other universities that use the exact same books we do, so it's not that we get a better or worse education. Since I'm doing engineering once i got to sophmore year my class size was about 30 kids, and then junior and senior year it ranged from 10-30. In other majors though, liberal arts one i hear it's very packed some times. So if you do something easy to have fun at school you probably wont know any of your professors names, and they won't know yours unless you make a actual effort too. If you do something hard, they will know your name, and you will know theirs. I assume that's the same at every university though.
