What is your overall opinion of this school?

The only reason I went to UConn was because it was close to home and easy. I really DONT like it at Storrs, its boring and there really is nothing to do.

Lauren

the people are really nice and friendly. the academic advisors aren't very helpful. a lot of the buildings/dorm are made to look nicer on the outside than they actually are on the inside. nice landscaping on campus.

Rory

Perfect size, not too big, not too small. People from connecticut are impressed when you say you go to UCONN, but anyone outside of the state is not. Unless they're basketball fans. When it comes to sports, school pride shines the brightest, to the point of unsportsmen like conduct against other school, but thats just the passion. The biggest complaints are the prices for how little is given. Expensive state school just makes everyone on edge about money.

Stephanie

While many say that UConn is huge and that its confusing to get around the campus, after your first day of just walking around the campus seems to shrink. It seems that you can get anywhere in 5 minutes. I use to think that I would never figure out how to get around but I have an easier time getting around here than my hometown (which I've lived in for 18 years).

Alix

Opportunity, opportunity, opportunity. Uconn is definately what you make of it. You have a wide range of options in terms of getting involved, its impossible not to.

Its a nice large university that feels like a small atmosphere...its kind of secluded but a good college town with everything right on campus that you could need. Overall classes are large which is good and bad at times. There is great school spirit seeing how we are a Division 1 school and many students are proud to be huskies...there is even a lottery for bball tickets. the housing situation however SUCKS especially for older undergrads...someone needs to come up with a better system.

Mel

The school is very large, but everyone finds their own niche. I spend most of my time at the library or just hanging out with friends, or participating one of the countless programs happening pretty much every evening. There's enough school pride for basketball. Football pride is building.

Shannon

Like I said earlier, UConn is a great school with a lot of really smart people. The campus is huge and I wouldn't have it any other way. At first I wanted to attend a smaller college & was really upset when I had to attend UConn because of money issues, but I am so glad Marist ended up being too expensive! I have visted my friends from highschool at their colleges and they aren't that great compared to UConn. The campus is like its own town and it makes the college experience that much better. Everything you need is on campus & the buses make it really easy for those students without a car to get everywhere. A lot of people are really excited when I tell them I go to UConn. The most frequent question is about basketball. Everyone on campus has a lot of school pride too, even I have some pride for this school and that usually isn't really my thing. I am a senior now & I'm planning on taking an extra semester to get the rest of my credits, but when I leave I am going to be really upset. I am going to miss all of the great friends I have made and all of the fun things we do on campus.

Jesse

People can't get over the fact that the campus is "huge". Yah, Uconn is basically the city of Storrs, CT: Look up 06269 and you will get "University of Connecticut", but don't be intimidated by its size. After the first few weeks on campus, you'll know where everything is and the only thing intimidating about it will be how long it takes you to get to some of your classes-Uconn does have it's own bus system!

Stephanie

The best thing about Uconn is all the activities it provides. It presents you with so mony new oppertunities that you may have never gotten the chance to engage in until you came here. There is a rock climbing gym, that I had to experience. You go there for a training session where they teach you how to climb the wall with and without a harness. There are shorter walls and taller walls and instructers all around willing to help when you go to climb on your own. They also offer a skydiving team which, although I havent tried, I think is incredible. They also offer interesting inturmurals such as innertube water polo. Now how often would you get to participate in that? Not to mention one activity that is comming up that I am very excited about, oozeball. It is mud vollyball. You sign up a team and participate in a tournement, where you recieve a tee shirt and a team picture. Plus there are little things all over the place, machanical bulls and moon bounces, and stuff a bear which is like build a bear and tons of oppertunitys to get free uconn gear and accessories. I think although Uconn is large, it is the perfect size. It is not gigantic. You can walk the length of the campus within 15 minutes which is not to burdensom. Yet it is large enough where people become familiar, yet it is easy to avoid those people whom you do not like. I like that when you go into a dining hall or into a new classroom, not everyone knows every dtail of your life. Who you have dated, hwo your grades are, what groups you are involved with, what state your from. I transferred from a small school in New York and I hated how after the first semester everyone in your graduating class knew as much as they could want to know about you. When I tell people I go to Uconn they think it is neat and generally tell me that they applied here or have at one point in their lives concidered going here, but didnt for one specific reason or other, not because they just didnt like it. They also always ask me if I go to the basketball and football games. Obviously football and basketball are big here. And I love going to every game I get a chance to go to. They are so much fun, the student section gets you all pumped up and the cheering and screaming is non-stop. It is a great atmosphere. The one thing I would change is that process of class and house selection. The time you get is random so you could really benifit or really lose out. I also dont like that you really dont start taking classes in your major until junior year, you take mostly General education requirements freshmen and sohpomore year. So how do you know you will even like your intended major if you dont get a shot at it until your third year of college. Im a business major and havent taken a business class at Uconn yet. what happened if once i start takeing classes and reaize I dont like them? I guess I wont be graduating on time. I spend most of my time on campus in my room doing homework. During the week I have to really buckle down so I can have free time on weekends. Although Uconn is great and I couldnt imagine being anywhere else, it is alot of work and you really need to dedicate alot of time to it. You need to read the book and go to ofice hours in order to really do great. I also dont reccoment skippin class although it is very easy to since attendence is not usually taken. Skipping just once class can put you so far behind and cause you to miss so much important information I think the teadhers and everyone here in administration are great. If you ask them a question they will do there best to help you. They really are looking out for their students. The one thing I must say, they are strict on deadlines so make sure you follow them! The recent controversy on campus is housing selection. Apparently they let to many seniors remain on campus so every other class is getting the shaft in where they live. I lucked out though and had a senior pull me into a nice living facility. i cant complain. Uconn is everything I could ask for.

Uconn is a very quite campus, away from many interfering and tempting big city activities. yes there is a lot of pride, sports is big too. Campus is beautiful.

Andy

Uconn is great for a big school. The campus is great and even though some may think it's too big to walk around all the time there are buses running most of the time that take you pretty much anywhere you need to get. Different organizations are always holding different activities to do throughout the week. It's easy to meet new people by joining a couple extracurriculars. There are places to get food into the wee hours of the night. The sports teams are well known and celebrated. The school has a really good reputation for academics and is the number one public university in New England. One of the bad things is the surrounding towns. There aren't a lot of towns around here that have much to do. Sometime you just want to get off campus and go do something, but to get to the next town takes 10-15 minutes by car. It would be nice to have the option of walking off campus to go do something.

Chelsea

I love UConn! Students here work hard and play hard. No matter what you're looking for, a person to study with, someone to order a pizza, or play a pick up game of soccer, they are easy to find. I do wish UConn had more of a college town feel, but they are working to build one in the next few years. Our new president, Mike Hogan, is really available to students; there is always an opportunity to get dinner with him or get to know him some other way.

Natasha

My school is wayyyy to big right now. When I tell people I go to UConn, people automatically say "Wow, very large campus isn't it?" And yes, for the 128425th time, it is. Most of the time I spend is either in my room, or at the lounges in the students union, I can concentrate best in those places. The UConn admisnistration is a bunch of uptight men in uncomfortable conservative suites. I'm sure they do a lot of work, i could only assume the up-keep of a college is really intense, but they just dont seem like friendly people, (or individuals if i might add). Well the biggest controversy to me if the fact that UConn cuts so much slack on athletic players. Overall there is a lot of school pride, i must admit i have purchased a famous navy UConn hoodie or two in my years here.

Emily

The best thing about UCONN is that it is big enough that you can certainly find something to enjoy. However, it does not feel like a large school because everyone finds their own niche. While walking to class I always see friends amongst the 20,000 students. I feel that the size of Uconn is absolutely perfect. When I tell people I go to Uconn most say that it is becoming a very difficult school, and that is the truth. I am from Norwalk, CT and all the students from Norwalk are in my opinion very intelligent. I want to estimate that there are 30 students from my class, while the freshman class has maybe half that many people from Norwalk because it has got that much more competitive. On campus I spend a great deal of my time studying in the Homer Library and at the Student Union eating and for meetings. There are a couple places to go to off campus that I like such as Margaritas, Changs, Sara's Pockets, and Wooster. A "college town" will probably surround Uconn soon. Until then there are a couple of fun places and Manchester is just 20 minutes away. ( Manchester has a mall, Evergreen Shops, and many restaurants). The Uconn administration is pretty good. I have complained about the mail room and they immediately replied saying they would fix my complaint. Housing is difficult, as it is at most colleges. I find the school of business very efficient also. There is A TON of school pride for basketball. The football games are very fun. Soccer is increasingly becoming bigger, and I forsee baseball becoming very big as well. An unusual treat at Uconn is Dairybarn ice cream which is made at uconn and is delicious. One experience I will always remember is Huskython and Spring Weekend.

Megan

I think part of what makes UCONN such a great school is its large amounts of diversity, and all of the extra curricular activities it has to offer for students to get involved. I believe that in some ways UCONN is too large, but they do a very good job of making it seem like every individual is a great attribution to the school. I spend most of my time on campus (besides in classes) in my dorm room, or the dorm rooms of friends, and also at the Students Union. I think another really great thing about UCONN is that there is an extremely large sense of school pride amongst all of the students who attend the university. The main thing that I know I will always remember is becoming a member of Pi Beta Phi.

Maureen

UConn is in the middle of no where. Despite this, the number of people on campus make up for this. It is a definatly a sports school. Everyone knows what is going on in college sports. Storrs is definatly not a college town. However, they are trying to build it up. It is annoying that you have to drive 20-30 minutes to get anywhere. Huskymania is apparent no matter where you go. Basketball tickets are nearly impossible to get but football tickets are easy to get and a lot of fun. There is always a bunch of kids that go to the games and tailgating is always a good time. It is really easy to get involved on campus. I usually only go home a few times a semester. Everyone pretty much stays on campus.

Justin

UConn is a very big school but it is a good size for me. it is a really fun and entertaining school with good athletics and a lot of school pride. it does not have a college town as it is pretty much placed in the middle of nowhere, but the campus is really big so it does not need so much of a surrounding town. The Uconn administration has been helpful in the example of advisors, but with dormitory administration they have not been helpful.

Mary

Best thing is the classes, not to easy, but not really tough either. I'd change the student body. Too many kids from CT go here, that don't deserve to be at a school that is almost impossible to get in from out of state. See, when you're out of state and you tell ppl you go to UConn there are amazed you got in. But if you're from CT and tell people you got in they say "don't drink too much". It's ridiculous.

Tori

The best thing about UConn is that there are a lot of opportunities of classes to take and clubs to join. If I could change one thing it would be the town surrounding UConn. For me, it's a little bit too large here. When I tell people I go to UConn, they think I'm from Connecticut or they think that I only go here because I didn't get in anywhere else. I spend most of my time in my dorm or in the theater buildings. There is hardly anything valuable in the town surrounding UConn. The administration is hard to navigate, you have to do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions before you can actually get the information you're looking for-- lots of red tape. There is definitely a lot of school pride here-- On any given day, at least every third person you walk by is wearing some UConn gear.

Jody

UConn overall was a great university. There isn't much to do after classes, but uconn's working on it. They have been trying to get students more involved but at times you just want to get the hell out of school related and take a drink. There is a ton of school pride, we have a bunch of sports we are top in the nation, we have a college radio station anyone can join, overall it's not just sports though. There's a ton of clubs from Skydiving to apple picking.
