University of Delaware Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Jen

sometimes

Kathryn

For the most part I think some of them are true but it is hard to judge.

Megan

These types seem to have a big presence at the school but a by no means the majority. There really is a group of people for everyone.

Jen

Yes, for the most part, but there also is a pretty big population of in-state students.

Kristen

definitely not.

christine

i believe a majority of our students do come from financially stable homes and i also believe UD students have traveled a lot.

Bill

For the most part yes. I would say Greek life has grown tremendously since I came here in 2005

Anna

ooo ye!!! ask anyone!!!

Ryan

I would say that the majority of our students are white, and they definitely like to party.

Kristen

not really. not everyone is. some are, i suppose, but it's a standard college.

Lauren

yes, mostly

Molly

Yes

lauren

i'd say these stereotypes are pretty accurate but not everyone is like that.

Megan

not really. UD is a party school if you make it to be, but it doesnt have to be and the judicial system is becoming a lot more strict.

keith

no

Allie

Yes about the hot girls but we are no bigger party school than any other large university.

Jenna

Yes.

Emma

yes for the most part

Ashley

pretty much

Alison

not entirely

Megan

Not 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} accurate but believable when you see and spend time with the student population

Alex

Not really. We know how to party but that's not all we do. There are lots of people with money, yes, but not even close to everyone is rich.

Alex

used to be a party school - they are cutting down a lot by closing bars and restricting greek life and althetic team social events. there's a lot of diversity, but the same types of people generally hang out together and don't intermingle.

Melanie

Hmm, there are definitely a decent amount of NYers, and I'd say a fair share of Guidos, but not a ton. As for sororities and frats, some of the stereotypes ring true at times. And I did feel that there were plenty of goodlooking people on campus!

Peter

for the most part yes

Kyle

Most of the students are from Delaware and middle to upper class. However it's not very difficult to find a niche as long as you look hard enough. The mixture of personalities is great.

Brian

For the most part, yes. But the apathetic part gets overblown.

Jimbo

Yeah... we're friggin college students who aren't hippy bums. Get over it. There are groups for people interested in those things, but thankfully Delaware isn't too caught up in them.

Elena

To an extent. I think all colleges are party schools - even Harvard, MIT and Yale. You're going to have a party wherever you have 18-year-olds on their own.

Cody

There is a significant lack of diversity on campus and the majority of students do come from Delaware, Maryland, or New Jersey.

Meg

I think so.

Alexis

Statistically there are a lot of students who are from Delaware. One, it is cheap for them to attend and in the past UD has accepted many students applying from Delaware. While the cost will remain cheap for these students, admissions is making it very hard for Delaware students to be admitted. UD is a big party school, but I feel this comes from the fact that there isn't much else to the state. Sorry to say it but UD is the state...besides DuPont. There is a ton of stuff to do at UD which does not involve drinking and partying. If you look beyond this stereotype you will find an abundance of activities in just about ever area of interest. And Yes, UD is a big school, but definitely manageable. After being at UD for awhile you realize that you create your own, smaller community within a larger one. I feel it is the best of both worlds: You have the big school there if you want it, and then you also have every chance and opporunity to make a smaller community for your friends and yourself.

Jeff

I wouldn't say they are 100 percent accurate but there is a lot of drinking which goes on around campus.

Jen

I think the stereotypes are pretty true. There are some more "normal" or genuine people, but I do think the stereotypes are pretty true.

Adam

For the most part

Julianne

Partially. Many students are actively involved in organizations that are politically involved.

emily

not in general, no

Toby

For the most part, yes. There are a lot of Jersey kids who attend this school. An in-state student is a stranger in his hometown.

Liz

while that stereotype is probably the majority of students here, I think that is the case in any college campus.

James

From my point of view, as a student, these stereotypes are fairly true. The college seems to be a school who puts in the effort to make everyone feel welcomed and taken care of.

Dan

Yes, the majority of students are apathetic toward world issues, and only really care about what they are doing for the weekend. There are typically problems between students and townies, however most of the time the townies are the ones who provoke a fight.

Andrea

Somewhat -- the majority of the student body is definitely white, with somewhat of a divide between students, but it is getting better. There are students who are extremely involved and passionate, but I do feel our school generally has fewer protests/demonstrations which people care about and less of a political energy than other schools.

Lindsey

YES! Everyone here is so friendly and has so much school spirit. The campus is beautiful and every building is brick. The kids are pretty preppy but not too much.

Corrie

somewhat...we could use more diversity here

Laura

The school is mostly white but I don't think everyone is as lazy and apathetic as people think. There are a lot of interesting students from different backgrounds who are doing important things with their lives and to help others.
