What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Paige

Always a party. Greek life is cool.

Katie

Sports teams are popular on campus but Greek life is very strong. My sorority works very closely with a lot of groups. Football games are very popular but not so much basketball. On a tuesday night at 2am i'm either asleep, studying, or trying to fall asleep. There are a lot of traditions and events, one being chapel fest. I would say people party mostly on the weekends. Frats and sororities are great at delaware but not the only important thing.

Amanda

I'm in a sorority and I love it. Football games are very popular. People party a lot. Sororities and Fraternities are popular but you don't have to be in one to have fun or make friends.

Shelby

Greek life is probably the most popular type or organizations on campus but they are not that bag. Im not in a group. students in dorms do leave their doors open and socialize. Football games are pretty big but nothing else really. The dating scene consists mostly of getting drunk at parties and hooking up. I met my closest friends freshman year in the dorms. At 2 am on a tuesday I would either be studying, reading, or watching a movie. Homecoming and chaplefest are the biggest events that happen every year. Most people party 3-4 nights a week. Fraternities are sororities are a presence but they are not the only thing going on. Last weekend I went to a bunch of parties, went to the mall, studied, and watched TV. You can go to a movie on saturday night or stay in and hang out with friends. Off campus there isnt really too much to do but philadelphia and baltimore are not that far and there are fun things in the cities.

Nick

Most popular groups are greek life and athletics (varsity and club). I call for UD and ask for donations and there are lots of different people at the job, but we get along well. Depending on the dorm, they will leave their doors open (freshman tend to). Football is huge. Dating seen is usually hook-up/party based. Or you get introduced by a friend. I met my closest friends freshman year and got along with them best. If its 2am i am either watching tv/ on facebook / or studying the day before a test. Homecoming is big each year. People party 2-3 days a week. Greek like is bigg-ish but not necessary to party. Last weekend went to parties friday and saturday and did homework on sunday. Saturday night without drinking you can go bowling, watch a movie, go out to eat. You party off campus.

Erin

Sororities and fraternities are very popular. I am not in one but my roommates are and i have met a lot of new people through them. Yes some students leave their doors open in dorms. My freshman year i wasnt in one of those dorms, the doors slammed shut. It depends if you are in one of the more social dorms. My sophmore year was like that. I met so many more people, including my roommates now.

Erica

Greek life is very popular on campus if you are involved in it! However, if you are not involved in it, there is also a lot to do as well! Most students leave their doors open in the dorms, almost always and almost all the time! People party whenever they have the chance. Usually towards the end of the week, wed, thurs, fri sat, but drink after a long day of class, or a stressful day at work. Sports are really popular and people get into football and lacrosse alot.

Connie

I think that sororities/fraternities or club sports are the most popular organizations on campus. I play club lacrosse with 31 other amazing girls. It is so fun to have these girls who you have something in common with on the field and can hang out with them off the field.

Alexandra

Fun if you know people judical affairs is lame

meg

The mos tpopular gorups on camous are Greek Life by far. I'm involved with UD club Rugby- I think it is a great way to make friends, get involved, and stay active. It depends what dorm you're in whether or not students leave their door open. The most popular sporting event is football, but for tailgating. Students hardly ever attend other sporting events. Dating scene is pretty much non-existent. I met my closest friends through my dorm. the footall games are always fun and the spring brings all the "fests"- chapel, wilbur, skid, etc. some people party throughout the week but thur-sat are big nights.I went out to a party last weekend. Sautrday nights can be spent out, or at the SCPAB movies or HEnz Zone- there's not much else to do.

Jen

greek life. do it.

Kathryn

I am involved in the sorority Chi Omega. It is a very well respected, classy organization. People might have a distorted vision of sorority life but i live it first hand. I live in the sorority house and it can sometimes be too much. I dont like a lot of drama but i think that is just part of being a girl. I am a very social person and i do like to party but my grades are very important to me. I have formed amazing bonds with people outside and inside my sorority so i feel very lucky. I wish i went to more sporting events because it was such a huge part of my life in high school. Honestly there are things to do other than drinking but for the most part i feel like thats what the majority of this campus chooses to do on the weekends.

Megan

I'm in a sorority so I am very partial to Greek Life. I think Greek Life at UD makes the University smaller because you meet a lot of people and get very involved. In the dorms all the doors are always open, there is a very friendly environment. Freshman floors are family. There is not much a dating scene but hooking up is huge. it is not uncommon for hooking up to lead to relationships and plenty are people are in some stage of a relationship.

Jen

Greek life and sports teams are prevalent as social centers, especially in parties. I am in a sorority which I pledged sophomore year and since then it has given me so many social opportunities- not just on the weekends but all week long. Most people meet their friends through clubs or on their floor freshman year and stay friends throughout school. Most of all, Delaware is a party school in every sense of the word and on any given night (even Mondays) a party could be found.

Kristen

frats and sororities and sports teams. my sorority is full of some of my best friends and I love everything we do together. I lived in Rodney and Harrington and mine was rarely closed. I go to every football game. I dont know about the dating scene in general. in my freshman dorm and through Chi O. trying to fall asleep or next door talking with my best friends. people party on the weekends usually. I think you can be in greek life and then it feels like its a big part of your life but if you're not in one it's not a huge deal, none of my rommates are in one. i went out with girls in my sorority.

christine

greek life is pretty big in UD. im involed in Chi omega. i think that dorms are 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} open, 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} closed. athletic events are somewhat popular.

Ryan

Greek life is pretty popular on campus. I am in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and I love it. When i lived in the dorms the only time my door wasn't open was when my roommate and I were both out. The athletic events aren't that popular outside of the football games. I met my current girlfriend here and we've been dating for 7 months. I wouldn't be awake at 2 am on a Tuesday because of my 8 am class on Wednesday morning. My closest friends are ones that i've made through being in my fraternity. People party a good amount here. Freshman year I partied much more than any other year. There are plenty of things you could do on a Saturday night besides drinking, I just think most people prefer to drink from a social aspect.

Lauren

Greek life is fun. Students only live on campus for 2 years. Partying is usually thusday-sat nights -- for juniors and seniors its tues-saturday night : )

lauren

a lot of popular groups on campus are fraternities and sororities and intermurals and club sports are very common too. i'm involved in one of our schools dance clubs and in a sorority. the dance club is great and is student run and gives everyone a chance to get involved and continue dancing through college. my sorority is amazing and it's the best decision i made in college. all my friends in our dorms left our doors open and were very social but other places to live i've heard horror stories of people being extremely anti social...it all depends on what dorm you live in. athletic events are averagely popular (except football is very popular). guest speakers and theater is not something i do personally but still is averagely popular among students. Dating scene? There really isn't people just meet out at parties and that's that usually. dating is so hard in college. i met my closest friends through my dorm floor. if its 2am on a tuesday and i'm up i'm studying. traditions and events that we always look forward to are homecoming and greek week. people party friday and saturday nights, tuesdays and thursdays are popular too especially at the bars. fraternities and sororities are important to me but its not a fact that everyone who is social joins greek life, like i've heard at some other schools. last weekend i went to a party and saturday i went on a bus trip to a bar. saturday night things that don't involve drinking - there's the movies and a bowling lane and we have a mainstreet with places to eat and places that sponsor local bands. the student center hosts movies. there are things to do that don't involve drinking. "off campus" isn't really the typical off campus. everything is in walking distance (within 10 min) even if you're technically off campus.

Megan

sports and greek life are very popular. I am involved in Chi Omega. doors are usually open in dorms but not constantly. i met my closest friends because we all lived on the same floor sophomore year. if you dont want to drink on weekends there is movies, mall, bowling. if i am awake at 2am on tuesday i am on facebook. athletic events are not too popular but i wish they were

keith

most popular team is football...students in dorms do leave their doors open...people party every weekend...you can go bowling on a saturday night and you dont have to drink

Allie

Greek Life is big! But I have also heard that if you are not in a sorority or frat you don't feel left out. There are alot of opportunities available through greek life, through professional connections, and friendships. Last weekend I went to a bid party for a frat. It was a blast.

Jenna

Club sports are a huge part of the University. Each club sport is almost like its own fraternity or sorority. They pay dues, have mixers, meetings, and formals. Rarely do club sport people join a frat or sorority as well. Greek life at UD is very balanced. Many people join fraternities and sororities, but students definitely have a choice. You can be in a greek organization and have friends in other ones. There are many "fests" at UD such as Chapelfest and Skidfest. These days involve drinking on one street all day long. The money is donated to an organization such as research for cystic fibrosis. Last weekend we went out Thursday to the bars, Friday we had a party, and Saturday we went to the bars also. Every week night there are specials at different bars, like Tuesday people go to Kate's, Wednesday is Iron Hill, etc.

Emma

I'm involved in Greek life, but it's not a huge part of campus life unless you want to be part of it. There are tons of on campus events and there is always something to do.

Ashley

Greek life. My dorm was friendly and everyone left their doors open but i have heard stories about other dorms that were not as friendly. Football games are popular, but not so much other sporting events. My closest friends are from my dorm freshman year and my sorority. A few close friends from classes. Dating scene- meet a lot of guys at parties and bars or in classes. On 2am on a tuesday i am either studying for an exam or during a not so busy week i have just gotten in from the bar. the majority of people party thurs, fri, sat... sometimes more, sometimes less. there will always be something to do those nights though. last weekend i went to the bar thurs and friday night and saturday night went to a bid party in wilmington.

nicole

Greek life is awesome at Delaware. Its not a big deal if youre not involved but it definatley makes the school feel alot smaller.

Alison

good social life

Megan

Social Campus, very little commuting Lots of off campus housing and party opportunities Greek life and Athletes are the most popular and largests groups

Alex

Football is popular and there are many fraternities and sororities. Phi Delta Epsilon is an international co-ed medical fraternity. We are for pre-med students. YES! The first few football games and homecoming are packed. We have good guest speakers that need more publicity. The theater is not very popular, but is good. People do not really date casually. Many students have a boyfriend/girlfriend on or off campus, but if you don't it is more about weekend hookups. My closest friends are people I lived with in the dorms. You just spend so much time together. Cramming for a test. Relay for life, homecoming, chapelfest, skidfest. Thursday-Saturday are the most popular going out nights. There are a lot of fraternities and sororities, but you won't be left out if that's not what you're interested in. Last weekend I hung out with my roommates, studies, and went to a big party. See a movie, go bowling, go to dinner, go out and don't drink. I live off campus and volunteer off campus.

Alex

1. greek life is very, very popular, and so are athletic teams. SCPAB is big. 2. Chi Omega was a great choice - not the typical sorority, welcomes individuality and filled with unique girls who are down-to-earth, genuinely fun, intelligent, kind young women. 3. in most dorms, yes 4. football is big when they are doing well. lacrosse, too. 5. speakers and theatre is there for those who want to enjoy it. 6. dating scene is there! everyone wants to meet people and there's fun places around campus to go on dates. 7. freshman dorm and sorority 8. hanging out with friends 9. chapelfest in fall and spring, homecoming, greek week 10. every night there is something to do 11. they are popular and prevalant, but do not dominate social life, just a fun thing to add more to your social calendar. 12. bars and house parties with friends 13. go to a movie, play or sporting event 13. shopping, restaurants

melissa

I believe that Greek Life is becoming increasingly popular on UD's campus. The sports teams are also very predominant on campus. I was involved in Chi Omega, one of the 8 sororities left on UD's campus. It was the best decision that I ever made when I started at UD, and to this day it was the best part of my college experience. Students in dorms do tend to leave their doors open, depending on the dorms. Football, baseball, basketball, and lacrosse tend to be the more popular sporting events. I personally do not believe that the theatre and guest speakers are as popular. I met my closest friends in my freshman and sophomore year dorms, as well as in my sorority. I remain friends with all of these people to this day, and they are some of my closest friends in life. If I was awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I was either getting home from the bar or up studying for a test! Homecoming, Greek Week, etc are events that happened for me every year that I was at UD. People party a pretty good amoutn at UD, but I dont believe that it is any mroe than any other university. Fraternities and sororities are big on campus, but still only about 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the Unviersity. It is growing, in my opinion, and it was a huge part of my college experience.

Melanie

Plenty of sports teams-varisty, club, intramural. The pool at the gym is nice, but I'd say all the gyms leave much to the imagination-definitely need bigger and more gyms to accomodate for studnets-don't be shocked if there is occasionally a line to get into the gym--that is definitely an area of complaint. There's TONS of guest speakers, lecturers, events, fairs that one can go to. PLenty of sports events throughout the year. Dating scene-plenty of single people, plenty of ways to meet people. I did meet my closest friends in college. Have the dorm experience if you can, and maybe an apartment or house your junior and senior years.

Peter

The only event on campus that brings the campus together is tailgating before a football game. Beyond that, small sectors may be interested in certain things but football games are the only times that the University stops, and everyone comes together. Not much can be done at UD not involving drinking.

Kyle

There is a community for everyone. If you like to go out and get hammered, you'll find the right people. If you're a devout Catholic that despises alcohol, you can find the right people. If you like to study till 2 am, people will be around to do that with. If you like going out the night before a final exam, that can bee done as well.

Brian

The Review. Good stuff. Depends on where you live and what year you are. No one cares who lives in there hallway as upperclassmen because you have a base of friends already. Football is popular, nothing else is. Depends on the speaker but not really. Met my friends through my floor, girlfriend, and the Review. Being bored cuz no one else is up. Homecoming/St. Patties Day/Cinco de Mayo are always huge days. St Patties day is the biggest. 3 days a week, at least, every week of the year. Not that important but they seem overwhelming at times. Partied. Movies in Trabant. Party.

Nicole

students in dorms left their ddoors open when I lived there. There are always guest speakers appearing on campus. People party Thursday, Friday, Saturday, ..... Tuesdays, Wednesdays... Sundays is there is a sporting event. Greek life isn't huge at UD, you can definitely get along with out it, however I love being involved in it, it was a great way to meet people and to help the campus feel smaller.

Jimbo

I was in a fraternity at UD, and it was actually a bit of work. There were tons of mandatory events and stuff, but it also was the best one (highest rated) on campus. If you're looking to join one purely for drinking, you can find one that would better suit you. If you want brotherhood, challenges, drinking, and bonding, you can also find one that suits you.

Elena

I'm involved with The Review this year. I was once involved in all the Asian clubs, but my friends who were in them have since graduated and the clubs fell apart. Students do leave their dorm doors open in the Freshman dorms. I'm in an apartment now, and I wouldn't feel secure leaving my dorm open. Athletic events are popular, but mostly because the games involve drinking. Guest speakers are somewhat popular. Theater is somewhat popular. I haven't been involved in the dating scene because I've had a boyfriend throughout college. I met my best friends during the first week of freshman year - it's the best way to meet your best friends! It was the best advice I got about college. If I'm awake at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, I would probably be studying. Usually, I'm in bed at that time, though, because I have a 10:10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Homecoming is a HUGE tradition. I love tailgating. People party 2-4 times a week. Fraternities and sororities are somewhat important. I'm not in one, though, and neither are my friends. I think you can be in them or not, and it's okay either way. Last weekend, I went home for a night and then came back for a cocktail party on Saturday. There is not much you can do on a Saturday night that doesn't involve drinking. I've been going out every weekend since Sophomore year. I guess you could go to the movies with friends or go out to eat. I usually go to the mall or Borders. They're both close.

Cody

Students at UD are very social. Greek life is popular but not necessary to having fun. The bars are definitely the center of social life in Newark. There is a special at every bar for every night of the week. Nacho nights at Kate's are one of the most popular. Homecoming and Saint Patrick's Day are huge day-long drinking events.

Meg

I am Greek, so I thing that Greek life is popular, and it is definitely growing. Students typically live on campus for 1 or 2 years and then off campus for 1 or 2. Students do leave their doors open in the dorms. Football has a solid following, but some other sports struggle to draw a crowd. There are a lot of speaks they get decent attendance & the theater is so-so. Most kids don't "date" but the hook-up culture is strong. I met my closest friends on my floor freshman year. If I'm not drinking, I am probably watching TV with friends. There are the "fests" that happen every year. Chapelfest, Skidfest, & Wilbur fest are just excuses for streets to shut town and everyone drink a lot. Greek week & homecoming are huge for Greeks. Homecoming is also huge for everyone. Most don't make it to the game. People party all the time. 10 a.m. on a Monday people are drinking- go to grotto's, you'll see. Greek life is only 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}ish and important, but you don't have to be Greek to party, drink, or have fun. I went to the bars, had sorority recruitment, and hung out with friends. They're movies at our student center, food on main street, but honestly, everyone drinks. We have a little main street which has food & some small shops.

Alexis

Greek life is popular but not too popular. It is the perfect mix. If you want to belong, its there, but if you don't, you don't feel like you have too. Intramural sports are very popular...anyone and their friends can join. The Newspaper is popular, as well as any academic clubs. I have been involved with the Blue Hen Ambassadors since freshman year. We are the faces of UD...aka the tour guides. I love it and it is the best thing I have ever joined. It is very competitive to get in and I was very proud to belong for all four years. It is such a strong, thought out and involved program that it blows other tour guides away. Besides a ridiculously vast knowledge of UD, it has given me a ton of friends, connections, and learning experience. Nothing could have been better for me to become involved with. Most students will leave their doors in dorms open...you always have the few who don't. Athletic events are extremely popular and always will be. We get a large amount of guest speakers who are very popular and well known. Theather is definitely there if you take out the time to look for it. I feel the dating scene is great...but then again I met my boyfriend of 4 years here...but yes in general everyone I know has met someone whether it has worked out or not. I met my closest friends freshman year. We were all in the same building, same floor...what else could you ask for? I'm never awake at a 2am on a Tuesday. If I am it's because I'm either studying for something or can't sleep. Most traditions/events are related to holidays or sporting events. People party all the time...but it doesn't affect whether or not you want too. Greek life is about 11{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} here...doesn't seem much but its perfect. 11{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of 16,000 is a good amount...its here if you want to belong and if you don't you feel aboslutely no pressure to. Last weekend I went to my boyfriends home. I am a graduate student now and I CHOOSE not to go out as much. But if I wanted to I know a ton of stuff I could do. Go to the movies, go to baltimore, philly, study, hang out with your friends without drinking, see a play on campus, do a weekend trip we always offer, go to dinner on main street, go ice skating at our rink, go to a sporting event, participate in a sporting event, go to the mall... everything mentioned above.

Jeff

I would say some Greek Life organizations and intermural sports. I work for the student paper, its time consuming but worth it in the long run. Yes. Football is very popular, everything else kind of pales in comparison. The dating scene is not too big but it still happens like it would anywhere else. Randomly in class and through connections to other people. Drinking. Different street festivals and art shows. Probably too often. They make up about 15 percent of the campus but depending on who you are they can be much more important then that number. Drank. There are many non-drinking options offered throughout the campus. Drink.

Jen

The dating scene here does not really exist. Most students just "hook up" at parties, or else some students have hook up buddies. I feel like most students here do not have a significant other they could ever see themselves marrying one day. Most of my friends and I have never been asked on a real date by any guy here. I met my closest friends through my dorm freshman year, through other friends, and through activities. People party here pretty much every night. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are the most popular party nights. On a Saturday night, you can go to the movies, go out to eat, hang out at a friend's place, go bowling, or go to an event on campus (such as a concert or play).

Adam

I am involved with Greek life, which is fun but not integral, but most of the campus social life revolves around bars and house parties. People drink frequently, big traditions include Homecoming, Cinco De Mayo, St. Patricks Day, and happy hour anywhere. On any given day there is usually a drink special somewhere. There is not much of a dating scene, people tend to meet at parties.

Julianne

The most popular team on campus is definitely the football team. There are greek organizations. I'm involved with Public Relations Students Society of America which has speakers from different PR backgrounds come and speak. There are also opportunities to go to PR conferences. In some dorms, students leave their doors, but when I lived in the dorms, no one had their doors open. Football is extremely popular but I'm not sure how popular other athletic events are. I don't really think there is a dating scene. I met my one close friend freshman year and then she introduced me to my other close friend sophomore year. My other close friends are also from freshman year. If you are awake at 2am on Tuesday you are probably studying. Homecoming happens every year and is a big deal. People party pretty often. Frats and sororities aren't that important but I always feel like I see people wearing their letters all the time. Last weekend I went to one of my study abroad friend's party and then hung out with my bffs. On Saturday, you can go to movies at the student center. Off campus, I either go to Philly or go to the mall. Or go see movies.

Liz

There is always things going on on campus and on main street, and having a social life is not a problem. I would definitely agree that this school is a party school, but only if you choose to partake in those activities.

James

The football program here is awesome and the games are extremely entertaining. Partying is an essential ingredient in most people's weekend but in honorable manner.

Dan

I was involved in the school newspaper known as The Review and the St. Pats hockey team, which was a team consisting of UD students which played against other students and community teams. The Review was both a job and recreational club. I started out writing sports, and eventually worked my way up to editor. The staff consists solely of students and the administration has no influence what the paper writes, therefore it was not rare for the paper to bash the administration. Meanwhile, the hockey team was more or less a beer league with our best friends. There is really no dating scene at Delaware. It is mostly just the drunken hook ups that could lead to something serious or could just as easily lead to nothing. It is rare for a student to ask another student on a date, unless it is Valentine’s Day or a Greek date party. I met my closest friends by living with them in the dorms freshman and sophomore year, and through my involvement on the newspaper staff and hockey team. At 2 am on a weeknight you are usually either cramming for a test or watching a movie…meanwhile on a weekend you are probably walking back from the bar (they close at 1am in Delaware which is horrible) and walking to a party or a friend’s house to continue to drink. A typical weekend goes as follows: Thursday night – if you are under 21 you will probably just hang out with your friends and if you drink you’ll probably just stay in and play games. If you are 21 you will most likely go to Deer Park or Grottos. Friday and Saturday night – pregame at your house or dorm then go to a party (also if you are 21 you may pregame at Grottos). If you are not a drinker, you can go see a movie at Trabant, see either an inprov group or play, ice skating, gym, etc. There are always non-alcoholic events on campus. Greek Life is only big to the people who are in fraternities and sororities. Otherwise they might as well not exist. I did have a number of friends in sororities who would invite my friends and I to their date parties which are always fun. And freshmen and sophomores will often rely on Greek houses for parties since most of their friends do not get apartments until junior year. Freshman and sophomore year I was probably off campus 40 percent of the time, whereas junior and senior year I was off campus 90 percent of the time. Newark is a small town with one major street, ironically called Main Street. Once I moved off campus, I spent most of my time on Main Street.

Andrea

I am in a sorority so I feel like greek life is pretty big, but you definitely don't have to be a part of it to have things to do on campus. I am also involved in the student newspaper and have met a lot of people through that. I also feel like being involved with the paper has made me a lot more aware of what is going on on campus than the average student. But generally, our student body is not very interested in theater, guest speakers or athletic events (other than football). I think most social circles are formed in residence halls with the people you live with. In the older residence halls people keep their doors open, but the university has been building a lot of new housing which is appartment style. I think this is an awful thing the university is doing because it discourages students to keep their doors open and be social with people they live with.

Lindsey

There is SO much to do here. Between 250+ clubs, there's a cappella groups, theater groups, bands, orchestras, adventure clubs, sports (both club and intramural) etc. So much to do. Main Street also has a lot to offer, with movie theaters and bowling alleys. There are always parties going on on weekends for those who like that scene. There are frats/sororities, about 14{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} join. So it's there if you want it, but if you're not in one (like me) you definitely don't feel forced to.
