University of Delaware Top Questions

Unfortunately, as I see it, University of Delaware is known as a heavy party school with an extremely prevalent Greek life though it only officially involves 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student population. So I would have to say that Greek life is definitely one of the most popular organizations on campus. Otherwise, we are known for our PROUD club, short for the Puppy Raisers of the University of Delaware, in which students raise and train service dogs before sending them off for their final training. I, myself, however, am involved in a trailblazing group that is new to UD this year called the Delaware Diplomats in which we attend multicultural events in order to earn study abroad scholarships so it really weaves a great connection between university students and the multicultural community here in Newark as well as abroad. I met my closest friends, not through clubs and such, but through my dorm. Seeing as we have no AC and close living quarters we all bonded extremely quickly over the first semester, all suffering through the same lack of sweat due to humidity and sometimes throwing "fan parties" where we would all bring our fans into one room in order to cool off more quickly during summer months! Aside from drinking and sweaty "fan parties" in the dorm, there are movies shown on campus on the weekends, ice skating down on South Campus, art exhibits and plenty of other activities going on on the weekends. Off campus, most recently, a couple of friends and I trekked down to Rehoboth beach for a day just to escape campus life. However Main Street and the nearby mall offer plenty to do off campus that isn't too far away. There is also amazing hiking and many parks nearby for the outdoorsy folks which I really enjoy doing with friends on the weekends!

Greek life is probably the most popular activity on campus, but there are LOTS of other ways to get involved! A lot of people go to UD, so there's lots of different interests. People definately are excited about football and women's basketball. I am not sure how often people party, because I don't at all, but this definately hasn't stopped me from making friends! I have met friends in many ways - I've met a few friends in class, some in clubs/organizations, volunteering, the residence hall. On a Saturday, if you don't want to drink, you can always hang out with your friends and have a good time without drinking!!

Clubs here are called RSO's, and there are literally hundreds of them. During the first week of fall semester they have the RSO fair where the student center Trabant is completely lined with booths where you can sign up for or just find out about all the different clubs. There is truly something for everyone. there are groups that range from the rock climbing club to intramural sports teams to a cappella groups to the chocolate club, and hundreds more. There are also a ton of university wide events. Last semester Wiz Khalifa performed here, and the big rumor on campus is that LMFAO is coming this semester. Frats and sororities have gotten pretty big here, and you will definitely see a lot of it around campus, especially in the spring during formal rush. If greek life isn't your thing, then that is totally fine too. I am not in a sorority although a ton of my friends are, and I have absolutely no problems finding things to stay busy with all the time. Dorm life is definitely one of the best parts about living on campus. There are the stereotypical party freshman dorms like Rodney and Harrington, and then the quieter dorms like Russel and Thompson, but of course this changes every year with new students. There is currently a lot of construction going on to build this huge new freshman dorm complex with bigger, suite style rooms that should be ready by next year.

Greek life appeals to many students and there are definitely a lot of students involved. That being said, it is not NEARLY as big a deal here as it is at other schools. You certainly won't be a loser with no friends if you don't rush. Club and intramural sports are popular and teams become very close, as well as clubs such as the sailing team (most people don't even know how to sail) and others that enjoy shared interests and end up drinking together and forming lasting friendships. UD doesn't have any notable traditions. There is a major drinking/partying scene here, but if you don't drink the school and different clubs organize various activities so you won't be sitting in on a Saturday night. For students who don't drink but are open to it or for students who drink but don't think of it as a major part of their lives, a happy medium may be hard to find.

One of the student groups that is very popular on campus is one that I'm involved in-Zumba club. It is a great way to burn some calories and have fun at the same time. The football games are pretty popular here and many students make a big deal about going to the games and tailgating. We have had some pretty interesting visitors to campus like America Ferrera, Wiz Khalifa, and Miguel. SCPAB is another popular student organization and they run all the events that feature artists like I listed previously. This is a HUGE party school. It is not uncommon to see people partying from Monday night to Sunday night. The dating scene is pretty vibrant as well.

There are hundreds of Registered Student Organizations. SCPAB - the event-planning group seems to be everywhere and has a lot of members. Greek Life also has a lot of members. There aren't just panhallenic frats and sororities - there are major-specific ones, community services ones, and an honors frat. Popular activities include for those over 21, going to bars on weeknights and weekends. For under 21, frat parties, house parties, appt. parties. During the week students go to the library and student centers Trabant and Perkins to study and do work. Dorms have lounges that a lot of people use. People also go to club meetings and to the gym during the day. The gym is always crowded. Various speakers come to the school weekly. This year the Center for Political Communication held a National Agenda series, where politics experts came to speak. Chris Christie is coming next week. There are also often film series. There's something do to daily whether it's being sponsored by a club or an academic department. There's also movies for $3 every Wednesday and Friday and Saturday and a comedian every Tuesday. The school has 2 student-run theater programs which put on productions frequently. There's also a professional acting program called the REP which is top-rated. There are a lot of music concerts to go to as well.

The most popular student activities on campus are Greek Life, Athletic Events, and SCAPAB. Over 20 percent of Delaware is involved in Greek Life. I am in a Fraternity and it was the best decision I've ever made. Most of the freshman dorms are extremely social and I am still best friends with the kids who lived on my floor my freshman year. It was like an open door policy whenever you wanted to go into someone else's room. There is always something to do on campus over the weekends and many events that happen during the week if you do not have homework.

about 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body is involved in greek life - so, it's there, people are aware of it, and you probably know someone involved, but it's not dominant on campus and you can be very active on campus and socially without pledging. Freshman year everyone leaves their doors open - not usually after that. Athletics are as popular as they can get for a I-AA school, but don't go to UD expecting it to be an sports-intense campus. The dating scene pretty much sucks. There aren't many other schools close by, so you can really only date within UD, and after sophomore year, you've met most of the same people. Dating doesn't really exist - although hooking up is always rampant. If you're up at 2am on a tuesday, you're either playing soccer on harrington beach, studying at dunkin donuts on main street, or stumbling home from nacho-night at Kates. The spring time offers a myriad of drinking-related festivities. Chapelfest, Skidfest, and Preekness are all very popular. Other than events that involve alcohol, there don't seem to be many other traditions. There is not much to do on saturday night other than drink - although you will always be able to find people to hang out with that aren't drinking.....you'll just be bored with them. Close-to-campus part-time jobs are popular....usually at a local restaurant or the mall. Other than working students don't spend much time off campus unless traveling to Philly or Baltimore to party.

Football games are the most popular athletic events...Well, in truth, pre-game tailgating is probably the most popular event. I've also had fun watching volleyball games and playing co-ed intramural sports.

Greek life is something I didn't participate in, but I never felt left out from the social scene. If you want to join a fraternity or soroity, it's there, but if it's not your thing, you don't really notice it. Except during spring recruitment when they seem to be everywhere. There are always house parties. The bars on in Newark only stay open til 1. But there's plenty to do if you don't feel like drinking.

The social life is great if you have the time to enjoy it. Join a frat/sorority, even if it's solely to have those contacts when you graduate (that's how I got my job - through my roommate's sorority). I wasn't in one in college, but i wish i had been. There's always a party or happy hour or special bar night. The music scene blows...cover bands are all the rage in Delaware. But, they're good for a drunken night at Deer Park. Don't live in the Towers. It's the most anti-social part of campus.

SCPAB deserves kudos for sponsoring and inviting many famous entertainers and comedians, from Lewis Black and George Carlton to Jon Stewart and Aaron Karo. Because Delaware is a small state and state politicians often are alums or have direct connections to UD, Sens. Biden and Carper were common appearances, as well as other state politicians. Students swarm the Tub for football games but student attendance declines as the season progresses. UD fans, however, are very passionate and dedicated, and often make long-distance away games. Students party very frequently, four times a week at times. At 2 am on a Tuesday, a UD is probably ordering food from a variety of town eateries: DP Dough, Cluck U chicken, pizzerias, etc.

- Students leave dorm room doors open - EVERYONE goes to football games. Other sports, not so much. - Dating? Funny. People hook up, they don't date. If they do date, it's usually pretty serious. - I met my closest friends in my dorm sophomore year. - If you're awake at 2am on a Tuesday you're A) at Wawa getting study fuel; B) At the bar if you're a senior. - Homecoming is in the fall. It's kind of a big deal. - For those people who drink, they tend to go out 2-3 nights per week. If you're a senior, 3 is a minimum. - Saturday nights could involve movies, student plays, athletic events, student group charity events. I'm drawing a blank on anything else. - Off campus? There's the mall...

Football games are a fun event at UD. Greek life is rather popular but the majority of students do not belong to a fraternity or sorority. Most social life centers around the bars and restaurants on Main Street and house/apartment parties.

I was involved in intramural soccer (so much fun!) and Kappa Alpha Theta (great experience). If I was awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I probably just took a break at Dunkin Donuts from studying for a test. When I lived in a dorm, it was the honors dorm, and those doors close by themselves, so my door was always closed by default.

Most popular groups are probably athletic ones, scpab, and Rubber Chickens.

Every dorm experience I had was incredible. People always had their doors open and their was always someone to mess around with at 4 am. Each dorm has a different stereotype, so a prospective student should research each dorm and request the ones that fit their personalities. Frats and sororities do have a big precense on campus, but you don't need to be in one to have a good college experience. Delaware can be a party school if you want it to be. There are always parties going on, but there are also campus activities available for students. In addition, Newark is pretty close to Baltimore and Philly for other activities.

I dont know about clubs or groups. I was pretty involved in my major and spent a large portion of my time hanging out in the studio. My friends I met from dorms, and classes for the most part

The most popular groups are greek life, Blue Hen Ambassadors, and little clubs such as the running club, yoga club, and sports teams. I was involved with Alpha Phi and the Blue Hen Ambassadors and I absolutely adored both. It is all in what you make of it. Neither of those groups became my life, and I still hung out with people outside of those groups. I always locked my door but many left it open. I do not trust anyone and there was a rapist and murderer on the loose two out of the four years I was there. Dating is basically non-existent...at least out of our group of friends. Most people just go to parties, get drunk, and hook up. There isn't really a "dating" scene. I met all of my friends in my dorm freshman year...and we are all still best friends. We stayed in a great deal and watched TV and movies. When we turned 21 you would most likely find us at the bar or out getting food after.

Last weekend I went out with friend and to Baltimore. On saturday instead of drinking you can go bowling, go out for pizza, stay in with friends and watch a movie, go to the movies... there are many options. I do all those previous activities off campus

I don't think there are really groups that are considered "popular." I'm involved with The Review, the university's independent student newspaper. It's a big time commitment but great experience if you're going into journalism, plus you're likely to end up with some pretty awesome friends after spending so much time with the staff. Only students in freshmen or East Campus dorms tend to leave their doors open... those are the only ones that stay open without being propped. Football games are really popular and basketball games suck. Guest speakers and theater just vary... it depends on what crowd they're trying to appeal to. There's always a huge variety so you're never without something to go see if you want to go see something. Dating scene? No one dates. I wish people dated. I met my closest friends in a variety of ways. Some of them I knew in high school and became much closer to in college. Some of them I met on my hall freshman year. Some of them are friends from organizations I'm a part of. If I'm awake at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, I'm either doing homework or watching something worthless on MTV. Homecoming is a big tradition. People party pretty frequently. The older you get, the more likely you are to go out on a weeknight. Fraternities and sororities are important to people in fraternities and sororities. I'm not sure how much they affect the rest of the student body. Last weekend I went out both Friday and Saturday night. I spent Saturday and Sunday daytime working at The Review office. There are tons of things to do on a Saturday night that don't involve drinking. SCPAB shows two movies in Trabant. You can bowl at the alley on Main Street. You can go shopping at the Christiana Mall or in Philly. You can stay in and play Nintendo or watch movies with your friends. I spend plenty of nights in. Off campus, I like to go out to dinner at all the great local restaurants around here and shop.

I was lucky enough to be placed on a dorm floor that everyone liked to interact with the others around them. Every night, it seems, i am up until at least 1 am and interacting with the people around me willingly. People seem to party fairly often and i believe that fraternities play a big role on campus because of the extra curricular events that they plan around campus and the community service and help they provide to the community that surrounds them.

There are all sorts of club sports (for us that did not want to play for colleges), and organizations. So its not so big, but is plenty evident if thats what you want to get into.

I think that the football games are the most popular team on campus. I think that tailgating and homecoming are major events that brings a lot of the students together. You can see the school spirit within the current students and the alumni.

Sororites and fraternities are very popular on campus. The most popular sororities are Chi Omega, Sigma Kappa and Alpha Phi. The most popular fraternities are Sigma Alpha Mu (Sammy), Sigma Chi and Theta Chi. Club sports and intramural sports are also very popular among students. Football taigates are very popular and more students attend the pregame party than the actual game in the stadium. The dating scence is rare to non exsistent. Boys dont take girls out on dates anymore. My boyfriends idea of going out to dinner is taking me to wings to go. Partying can and does happen on pretty much every day of the week. Once you turn 21 house parties are non exsistent and each bar has their own day. Sunday and Monday are usually for doing work- but if youre up to drinking grottos is the place to go. Tuesdays are 90s night at Kates, Wednesday is Iron Hill, Thursday is deer park or kates, and friday and sat are whatever bar is least crowded, but usually Kates or grottos.

I met my closest friends from living in the same dorm as them freshman year. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, I'm most likely finishing a paper or cramming for an exam. People Party on average 3 nights per week. Movies are offered at Trabant, the student center, on weekend nights. Most shopping is off campus.

Greek Life is very popular. Each sorority has about 100+ members. Greek Week during the Spring semester and Homecoming during the Fall are Greek Life's two biggest events. The biggest event of the year is Airband- an annual competition between all the sororities and fraternities where they perform a dance/skit. It is VERY competitive and sororities practice literally hundreds of hours for it. The social atmosphere of Delaware primarily revolves around drinking, whether you are 21 or not.

I believe Greek life at UD is growing. I highly enjoy being in a sorority and believe it has greatly improved my view of the Univerisity.

I am a member of one of the largest sororities on campus. It definitely helps your social life because events help you meet many people. On the average weekend we go to the bars and then have parties afterwards and my friends apts.

I feel that Greek Life is the most popular, however, it is only 20 percent of campus. Football games are very popular. I met all my friends freshman year in the dorms and around at parties. Homecoming is a huge tradition. People party between 2-5 times a week. I went out last weeked. I don't know what to do on a saturday night that doesnt involve drinking. I live off campus.

They are instrumental to philanthropy, campus activities, etc. They form a strong social network that is beneficial to many people. They provide structure and a schedule outside of classes. Saturday night- you can go to the movies, go out to dinner, stay in and play board games/watch a movie

Homecoming is one of the biggest events that all students look forward to each year. Its very common to start drinking at 10am or early. A lot of students go for the game but more people go for the tailgating. My freshman year I went tailgating and it was a blast. Once the game started we went back home. Since the police have been cracking down more on underage drinking so I am waiting to do it again next year when I will be 21.

Greek life is not huge but I don't know what people who aren't in Greek life do with their time. It gives structure to our college years. The bars close early here but house parties are always big, although as you get older you will live at the bar.
