What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Julia

Greek life is pretty common on campus, most parties are thrown by the frats. There are some adventurous clubs that are pretty popular too.

Corinne

Hockey games, Alpine Club (so I hear...), athletics, Greek Life, Sturm Thursday Night Movies (they show recently released movies on the big screen in the auditorium for free). I'm a part of a sorority and absolutely love it. It's a great mix of some of the stereotypes (nothing wrong with a *little* bit of crazy) as well as some amazing groups who are involved with philanthropies, service organizations, and supporting one another! Greek LIfe is about 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population, so it's definitely public, but doesn't take over the school. I'm also on the water polo team, a club sport. It's a ton of fun, a great way to stay in shape and meet some great friends! Guest speakers, athletic events, and other random freebie events are pretty popular, although it's rare for people to go just on their own, friends usually band together for those. There are also a ton of opportunities for musical interests, ethic groups, and community service activities.

David

Our main sport is Hockey. Many students, Alumni and area residents enjoy attending these events. There are also many other sporting activities that have decent followings like basketball and lacrosse. On campus groups range from hobbies to professional organizations. We also have a greek presence, but it is not very impactful on campus. It seems like the sororities are actively trying to boosts their numbers. Greek life does not impact social life like it would at a public university or private university like SMU. Most students drink socially more than 3 times a week. Drug use occurs with street drugs and prescription abuse. For a student that doesn't drink, they can go to clubs downtown, catch a movie or go to an art show.

Khubaib

Alpine club is one of most popular student group, where the group plans various outdoor activities every month. Thursday night movies are also a highlight were the DU programs board screens a relatively new movie in our largest auditorium before the movie is out on DVD. Hockey games are always sold out. About 18{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student population are part of the greek system and it's been increasing every year.

Youval

The DU Programming Board (DUPB) does a great deal for the student population. Every Thursday (since most people don't have Friday classes) they have a free movie playing, and it's almost always something you'd want to see. Your residence hall your first year will basically become your family (unless you join one of the 8 fraternities or 5 sororities), as RAs are great about encouraging open door policy. Especially if you live in a living and learning communities (LLC) like the Pioneer Leadership Program, or the Sustainability LLC, the people you live with will most likely be the people that you hang out with the rest of your college experience.

Shannon

Greek life is big for those who want to pursue it, but only about 22 percent of the DU population goes Greek. Intramural sports of Broomball, Volleyball, Basketball, and Soccer all take place htroughout the year. I just started playing intramural soccer every Thursday night and it's really been a great way to end my weeks. We have a lot of school spirit for our hockey games, especially for games against our rival, Colorado College. And hopefully after our Lacrosse team making it to the Final Four, we'll have more spirit for that in the Spring. There are generally house parties mainly on Thursday and Saturday nights, or people are going out to clubs and bars. There are also plenty of alternatives to not drinking with the city of Denver nearby. Tons of people go into the mountains for the weekends and totally love every second of it.

Mackenzie

Of course, 16th Stree Mall is just a light rail ride away, so that is always fun for an evening. During ski season, you will be able to find a large number of people going up to the mountains every weekend, but even if skiing isn't your thing, there's plenty to do in Denver. House parties are common, and easy to get into if you know someone, and there is a big bar culture (among the 21+, of course.) Sports games are incredibly fun, especially hockey games, and there are generally good student turnouts for those events. Living in the residence halls is a great way to meet people, and residence hall life is fun, although Greek Life is fairly active also.

Ali

The most popular club on campus is Alpine club. This club basically does anything and everything outdoors. Skiing, moonlight snowshoe hikes, rock climbing, weekend trip to Moab. Basically just really amazing things. My favorite club on campus is the Cooking club. They hold events every other week and teach students how to cook a gourment meal. Last year they even did a sushi rolling demo and we all got to make and eat our own sushi after a guest sushi chef taught us how! Another awesome group on campus is the DU Programming Board (DUPB). They put on various events throughout the year including concerts, May Days, Winter Carnival, free movies on thursday nights and much more. During May Days last year, (which is a week basically celebrating spring with free food, concerts, prizes all week), One Republic came for a surprise acoustic concert on the lawn in the middle of campus. We also got 5 dollar tickets to see Jay Z...can't beat that, even if you aren't a huge JayZ fan!

Sydney

The Alpine Club is really popular and fun - they take some trip outdoors almost every weekend (my favorites are the hikes, but they do rafting, biking, rock climbing, and skiing/snowboarding). Greek Life is fairly popular (~20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}), and if you want to rush you will get a bid (no cuts throughout rush). With that said, if you aren't in greek life, you can still participate in their parties and philanthropy efforts. Club and intramural sports are also a huge part of campus life - it's a rite of passage to be on a broomball team at least one quarter at DU! We also have a programming board for social events and an undergraduate student government.

Crista

Because DU is located in a state where the weather allows for any type of activity imaginable, the students here take full advantage. One of the most popular clubs on campus is DU Alpine Club where students go on trips and spend time outdoors. During winter, students love going skiing and snowboarding in the mountains, only an hour and a half from campus. Also, Explore Denver is an organization that provides students with discounted tickets to activities and venues throughout Denver. For example, you can get Rockies tickets, zoo tickets and even Elitches passes for over 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} off. Last year my friends and I went to the play Billy Elliot at Denver Center of Performing Arts for only $5 per person! Furthermore, students not only get involved on campus but also all around Denver. The lightrail has a stop next to campus where students can navigate Denver and its surrounding areas with ease.

Marisa

There is a huge variety of student activities. Greek life is an option, but not a neccessity. There are 10 frats and 5 sororities, but only 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of DU students are involved in Greek Life. Athletics is big here. We have an excellent hockey team, as well as volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, and even broomball. Some of our fun and quirky student groups are DU grilling society, DU programming board, and Pioneer Leadership Program.

Emilee

Athletes are all over this school. Since mostly all sports at Division 1, it is no wonder there are so many. Greek life seems like it is the most popular but that's only because they spend the most time together and are seen always together. It really only makes up about 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of student life. Undergraduate senate is also an extremely popular and important activity on campus because it helps with the budgeting as well as the spirit of the students.

Chris

There's never anything going on around campus. A typical DU student goes to his or her classes (on certain days) and then hangs out with his or her clique. There's little interaction between students outside of their group and it just doesn't feel like a college. There's very little racial or ethnic diversity but to be honest, this did not bother me as much as the lack of diversity in interests, ideas, hobbies etc. The few parties that take place at DU are rather boring. The majority of students just go to nearby bars...every single night. Not much fun at all.

Natasha

BLAHHHHHH...... If your not in a fraternity or sorority then DU isn't for you... Basically a typical DU students' life revolves around these mindless activities.

Tiffany

It's awesome to have Denver just a few minutes away, but there is plenty to do on and around campus as well. First of all, dorm life is amazing. Everyone leaves their doors open and your floor really becomes your family. I made all my best friends on my floor. On campus, the most popular events are hockey games all winter and Maydays in the spring. This year's Maydays was so awesome, we had a whole day of concerts and sweet activities on the green all week. I went rock climbing and bungee jumping between classes, can't complain... The party scene is honestly pretty weak. There are a few good ones every now and then, but if you're looking for a party school DU is not it. I think that's a good thing, but I know some people who hate that about it here. I mean, there's always somewhere people can go and get drunk but it's not necessarily fun. Outside of stereotypical partying, though, there is always something to do simply because you're living with friends who have become your family. Whether it's taking a weekend trip to them mountains or just having a movie night, there is always something to be doing. It's kind of lame, but I am too and I love it :)

Alexandria

Probably the most popular clubs are the sports teams and the Greek life. Almost everyone I know either plays a sport or is involved in Greek life. I personal play on the womans club ice hockey team, and most of my friends are either on my team or in Greek life. My floor never really left their doors open, but when I visited the other freshman dorm, almost everyone had their door open. I think no matter what the event is, there is always a pretty good turn out. Dating scene is great! Although, most of my friends I met already had relationships coming into college. I met my closest friends in my freshman seminar class. 2 am? I'm either doing homework, or on Facebook. The party scene is great, but sometimes a little excessive. Most of the people I know were involved in a frat/sorority, but I'm not and I got along just fine! I went to lots of greek events and never really felt left out.

Robin

Again there is very little variation in social life. Find yourself a house party. It's surprising how few people go downtown when the lightrail is on campus.

Reed

All accepted students should apply to a Living and Learning Community. These are free and loaded with perks. Beyond free shit you'll get, starting your freshman year, you'll live with about thirty students whom you'll share interests and build lifelong friendships with.

Becca

People in the dorm I lived in (J-Mac) left their doors open most of the time and I felt like their was a great community. I have met my best friends in my dorm. Sororities and fraternities are fairly important-their are always sorority/fratenity sponsered bar parties and events. A fair share of the people I lived around partied very often. If you don't drink though it is possible to find great friends who are up for doing things other than drinking such as going downtown, going to movies, and many other random fun things you find to do.

Meagan

My closest friends were the people on my floor. By the time I left for summer they felt like family. We always had doors open or if they weren't, we would just walk in. They were the people I would go down to the cafeteria with, study with, go out on the weekends with.. I strongly recommend getting to know your floormates right away. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday its because I'm with my friends on the floor. The party scene at Denver is a mix of house parties, bars and fraternities. The Greek system isn't huge, but it is a large part of campus because there aren't that many people.

Cam

Greek Life at DU is great. There is always an event being sponsored by one of the Greek houses. I've gone through rush week. As a new student to DU it was a great way for me to meet new people. Athletics here at DU are the heart and soul of Pioneer Pride. We have a world class hockey program that brings everyone together. DU has guest speakers come to our campus all the time. In the last year we have had all the presidential nominees. Bill Clinton, Obama, Lance Armstrong are just a few of who has stopped in to make a difference in the students and community at the University of Denver in the last year. Dating at DU is interesting... we have some of the best looking students in Colorado. the benefit of being a smaller campus you get to know the people around you better... increasing your chances of landing that perfect ms/mr right(now). Just like any school there is a party scene for those who qualify : ) Being close to downtown there are always groups of people heading to the big night clubs. You can always find someone you know at one of the local campus lounges and community bars that are close to campus. The fraternities and sororities are a great way for people from out of town to meet new people and make great friends for life. Due to the small population of DU the dorms are like a giant fraternity in their own right. you will not have any problems meeting people in your dorms with like interests and everyone is within three blocks of anything. Its summer time and there are some students that stick around all year. Last weekend a couple of buddies and I went to Jackson Hole Wyoming for a cabin trip. A night without drinking is common @ DU. There is a great entertainment complex 5 min from school that has a Imax movie screen and arcade games. There is a 24 hr Starbucks not too far away and the light rail can get you to any part of the metro area to do just about anything. Off campus I play hockey, bowl, softball, flag football, indoor soccer, mountain bike, dirt bike, ski, snowboard, go to movies, camp, hike. Ave's Nug's Rockie's Mammoth Rapid's Outlaws are the big professional teams that at least one is playing year round!

Ashley

one thing i really love about du is how important all student groups seem to be on campus. the greek system does not have a huge influence over the campus- all groups seem to be relatively equal. the great thing about the campus is that dowtown denver is like 10 minutes away. there is a lot to do on campus but also TONS to do outside of campus life.

Adrienne

I've gotten very involved in Greek Life this year. I rushed right away my freshman year and have definitely found my place in my sorority. It's definitely a good way to meet a lot of people and find a group that you can be friends with for the rest of your life. As far as social life goes for the entire campus, it is more of a party school than people give it credit for. There are a lot of house parties and fraternity parties, and different organizations host bar parties downtown from time to time. There's also a really big bar scene. Students like to hang out at places around campus like the Border and Stick-e-Star and Stadium.

Chris

The friends you meet freshman year, you'll most likely be friends with for the rest of college. The dorm experience freshman year is imperative. Greek life is great, do it. Most of my friends party 3 nights a week, Thursday's are the big nights. But really you can party as much or as little as you'd like.

Torry

The bar across from campus allows more underage drinking than a high school field party. Most of the people living in the dorms will manage to get themselves a fake ID very quickly. The school has a pretty decent sport programs, hockey and skiing are the strong points, and the school gives season tickets out to hockey for $60 to students.

Charlie

Well, everyone's looking to hook up for the most part. Guys are either looking for a one night stand, really needy, or already taken. But there are really nice guys too, just don't look to meet them at a party. As far as parties go, there are quite a few except in winter when everyone's in the mountains. Drugs aren't too bad comparatively but they are available basically wherever -- pot, hard drugs, prescription, etc.

Alex

Most people dont have class on fridays so the weeks absolutely fly by. 1/2 your time is party time!

Liz

The Alpine Club is popular, and greek life is mildly popular. There are alot of sports players here. I am involved with Gamma Phi Beta sorority, which I absolutely love because the greek life here is much more layed back than most schools, and you don't have to be greek to fit in. Also, if you are greek, you still hang out with everyone else~! Athletics events are not that popular, unless it is hockey. It is easy to find someone to date here, but at the same time, it can get frusterating because comparitively there are a small amount of students here. My best friend is my roommate, and others I have met through Gamma Phi and my classes. 2 AM on Tuesday, I would be doing homework. Every year there is camping out for hockey tickets. People party every weekend. Last weekend I went to the bars around campus, as well as attending greek events - always so fun! I also went on a few runs, did homework, went to lunch downtown and volunteered. Off campus, I get food, shop, explore, hike, see friends at close schools.

Kevin

Outdoor clubs are big. Skiing/snowboarding are fairly prevalent, as the Rocky Mountains are just an hour or so away. DU is ranked as one of the top 25 most fit campuses in the US. In other words, we enjoy staying active. Most students don't have classes on Fridays, so every weekend is basically a three-day weekend. Consequently, Thursday is the main night for going out/partying. However, if partying isn't your thing, there are always plenty of things to do on campus. Residence hall life in particular is great; my closest friends are those that I met on my floor in the first few weeks of moving onto campus. Every Thursday, our programs board shows a free movie in our largest auditorium, usually one that has yet to be released on DVD. Guest speakers come to campus frequently, including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King III, Lance Armstrong and Madeline Albright (all within the last year). There is always at least one big concert on campus per year, and it's usually free for students or highly discounted. Hockey is our biggest sport, and we tend to go pretty crazy for those games, especially when we're playing our rival, Colorado College. One of the biggest traditions at DU is May Days, a week-long celebration near the end of may that includes music, food, a carnival, and more.

Kelly

The social life at DU is pretty decent, but it could use some galvanizing. There are not many activities that one could participate over the weekend that don't involve drinking unless you find a particular group of people. A lot of the social life is orientated towards the Greek Life on campus. Besides that, however, if one were to try to look for a party or something very exciting going on during the weekend, it can be hard at times unless you want to go to a fraternity house to party.

Joanna

People drink A LOT. I work at a local pizza place until 3 am weekends and am appalled by the number of drunk underage DU students there are out Thurs thru Sat nights. Frats and Sororities are too much of a big deal. Hockey is crazy popular. Of course, hockey is DU's thing though. I met my friends at transfer orientation and through protests I attended. Students party every weekend, and some Christian groups have root beer keg parties that are alcohol free. Bars are a big deal. The majority of underage students have fake IDs.

Sarah

DU is very social, people always have their doors open. There are parties everynight of the week. I don't go out everynight, but I know people that do. There are always options!

amelia

the main events are sorority and fraternities parties and exhnages, and philanthropic events usually doors in any place of residence are open people date, but most people are in a relation ship long term, or single 2 am on a tuesday, watching a movie with girl friends, maybe on a special occasion out downtown most traditions are sorority or fraternity events people go out thurs and saturday mainly, but other days as well the people in fraternities and sororities plan most events, either within their organization, or as a part of another organization last weekend, a concert and a baseball game on saturday not drinking hanging out going to dinner, watching movies, going to a sporting event off campus go up to the mountians, or outside in general, especially parks, also to the cherry creek shopping district

Elena

This campus is all about its fraternities, sororities, and hockey team. Much of the campus culture revolves around those things.

Torry

Night clubs, movie nights!!

Amy

My first week here a frat boy told me that you don't have a social life if you don't join the sororities or fraternities. While this is not true, the Greek life here is a large part of the social activities offered. They sponsor and arrange the charity events that tons of people always attend. House parties are also popular as are the bars (Jordan's, StickyStar, The Border, The Stadium). However, we are not Boulder. There are not 10 parties to chose from every night, if you want a party you have to know who to call. The lightrail stops right at campus and goes directly downtown so you never have to drive drunk and can access that night life even if you don't have a car. If you don't drink, you find friends who don't drink...and do whatever people who don't drink do...? The dating scene...you date someone from our school and everyone knows. Your ex knows your boyfriend who knows your future boyfriend.

Rebecca

First of all, if I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday, it is because of a fire alarm. Those happen too often, but I guess its a way to socialize. Luckily, it has never happened when it was snowing or raining, although there have been nights where it has been pretty cold. Beyond that, it is easy to meet people and make connections because of the variety of programs and events DU offers. Plus, between sports, greek life, clubs, and other groups, people have many opportunities to fit in. DU is not a huge party school, but there are chances to have some fun and meet some really great people. I met my closest friends either from living in the International LLC or through my first-year seminar. Both are unique and valuable opportunities offered by DU.
