University of Denver Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Mia

The worst thing about my school is the lack of diversity and the close-mindedness of some of the students. There has been a lot of racial tension on campus as of late and, being that I am a POC, it has been intimidating and scary to leave my dorm room at times.

Sometimes the University of Denver feels more disconnected because it seems like it is a commuter school. However, I found the more involved a student gets on campus the less it feels that way. The academics can be very challenging, almost to the point where someone may feel like giving up. Even though at times it is daunting it can be arguable that it is worth the time and effort.

Mattes

The worst thing. It is definitely a tough question to answer. In the hustle and bustle of the school year it is easy to forget to prioritize. While there is so much going on around campus, anything from hockey games to cultural dinners, it can be hard to balance work and play. I personally love the quarter system because it is refreshing to change classes every ten weeks however it is a demanding fast paced schedule whcih makes it especially hard to balance your schedule.

Brooklyn

I belive the worst thing about the University of Denver is the lack of cultural diversity. Many, if not most of the kids at this school are wealthy and caucasion and a lot of the time their first encounter with other minorites is when they arrive on campus. I often hear ignorant side comments which would be hurtful if said face to face. I think the University needs to do more to promote diversity in ways that include the whole community of the campus instead of only giving out lets to certain groups.

Samantha

The cost is sometimes detrimental to my school work because I have to work 2 jobs in order to pay tuition, which can have a poor effect on GPA. This is even with more financial aid and merit scholarships than most people have. To be fair, though, I have not had to take out any loans. Also, I come from one of the most diverse communities in Colorado, and had a sort of culture shock coming to DU: it is not as diverse as I would like.

Katie

It is expensive, so many of the students are wealthy, or have received a lot of scholarships and financial aid.

Rachel

The worst part about the school is the lack of diversity in the student body. Although everyone of different backgrounds is accepted and minorities are present, the vast majority of the student body consists of a wealthy, white, conservative, and a very privileged population.

Quinn

The schooling at the University of Denver is fantastic. However, the price for the amount of schooling that one receives does not correlate. I have felt at some times that those who pay come out of college into too much debt. If one is not able to find themselves a job after college, then the amount of education one received does not compare to the amount of debt that needs to be paid back.

Michael

The worst thing about the school is the overwhelming price that dorm residence have to pay for the small amount of items they get in return such as room space and amenities.

Veronica

The worst thing about my school is that there is no football team. I say this because I feel that students have so much pride at the hockey games that could be used towards another sport. In the fall there is no big sport that the school gets excited about. Watching hockey games and being a part of the DU community is so great. If we had a football team I feel this pride would be even bigger.

Courtney

The tuition because I am a single mother of two. Other than that, nothing.

Lindsey

The worst thing about the University of Denver is that it is really hard to get the classes that you want as an underclassmen. Athletes, honors students, and various other groups get special registration times, but I feel like all majors need special treatment is one gets it. Registration gets easier as you move up in grade levels, but it would be nice if it was easier to get into classes as a freshman.

Krystal

The University of Denver is a great school in terms of its academics, community service opportunities, etc. The only thing that really bothers me is that there is an apparent lack of diversity on campus. Growing up and attending school in a mainly hispanic community, I go to DU and sometimes I feel out of place. Yes; there are definitely great people that go to to DU that are very accepting of cultural differences. There is also others who are very opposed and conservative. I feel torn between two different realities, the one at home and the one at DU.

Lammi

The worst thing is how the attention you get varies depending on what teacher you have or what advisor you have. It is the lack of consistency in which you have one professor who is awesome, but midway through the class you have a professor who is horrible.

Sabine

The first 'worst thing' would be the school adminitrative staff, particularly at the financial aid offices and International House, and their attitudes towards students. They are often ill informed and downright dismissive. The second matter of concern is the school's obsession with creating an environment of ‘diversity’ which is almost coerced. I am an international student and person of color and even I hate DU’s version of diversity. So often it is reduced to the color of one’s skin or sexual orientation, a very limited view of the issue.

Mikaela

I honestly don't think there is a bad aspect at the University of Denver. As a new transfer student, I have been pleasantly surprised with my classes, my dorm, the people, etc. I have no complaints!

Blair

I believe the worst thing about my school is the lack of diversity. I do understand that the University of Denver is a small private school and tuition is pretty steep so it deters prospective students. Although tutions is farely expensive there is alot of finicial help for those interested, i just dont think prospective students take the time to look into it. Although im saying this is the worst thing in a way im complimenting the University because all in all this is not a huge problem on campus.

Samuel

It is not spirited enough. I aim to run for student body president and hope to be able to change this feeling around campus if possible!

Latrice

The only thing that I could even consider "worst" at Denver University is the limited option my schedule disallows to become a full time student and the flexibility to quit my job all together. It is a also a campus that is predominantly women (except) for a couple of males, but in actuality this is what makes the school very unique.

Jennifer

I think that the University of Denver advertises itself to be more of an academically selective school than I think it is. I was under the impression that academic standards would be a little bit higher than they are, but I still find myself surrounded by people who do not exert very much effort when it comes to their studies. Students expect a lot more lenience from their professors with respect to grades and also expect opportunities to be handed to them. I think there should be a higher standard when it comes to success and excellence.

Federico

There is very little intelectual discussion outside the classroom. Greek life is very big and most of the socializing revolves around greek parties and social events. Without generalizing, I find a lot of students to be very shallow and sheltered with very little exposure to the rest of the world in a cultural and economical basis. Although the school has a working campaign to promote diversity, the student pospulation is very homogenueous in terms of ethnicity, race and socio-economic backgrogund. A lot of students lack curiosity towards the rest of the world and even current issues in this country.

Madeline

After my first quarter at the University of Denver, the only thing that I consider to be the worst thing is the library. It is kind of out of date and doesn't offer much technology wise to help. I enjoy the rooms and space Penrose offers but as a whole it would be nice to update.

Kiandra

I cannot honestly provide only 1 worst thing about my school. It would be a tie between two things- the lack of diversity and the cost of attendence. To make matters worse, in regards to cost, it seems that much of the students' money is spent on unnecessary additions/alterations to the school and greek life (even when the student is not involved in greek life).

Regina

The worst thing about the University of Denver (U of D) and more importantly The Women's College (TWC)is that there is not enough on-line courses that can fulfill the obligations of a degree program. Being a traveler, I would liked to have seen more on-line courses so that my physical presence at the institution would not be necessary for me to claim my education and receive my degree. In our increasingly electronic world of today, and with the resources I feel that the U of D has at their disposal, on-line courses should be offered.

Angela

I'm not sure actually. There are so many things I love about the school that it is hard to pick out something I don't like. I would say the worst thing was the orientation. I transfered to the University of Denver this fall, from a local community college. Since I had already been in school for two years, I had the college experience pretty figured out. I also am an older student, so I have life experience. The orientation was a complete waste of time! I felt like I barely learned anything.

grace

You must put yourself out there in order to make friends, if not you will not have any lasting friendships throughout your college career.

Stephanie

The worst thing about University of Denver is that there is nothing wrong with it! University of Denver leaves no room for complaint.

Aspen

DU is very focused on making money which makes for a somewhat hostile relationship between administrators and students. My school nickels and dimes at every turn. For example, we are charged a $107 student activity fee because apparently that is not covered in our quarterly tuition of $11,868. They also recently created a policy that prevents students from stacking scholarships. For example, if a student is awarded $15,000 from DU and $9,000 from the busniess school then DU reduces their scholarship by $9,000 so the student still only ends up with $15,000.

Piniel

The worst thing about my school is the lack of socioeconomic and racial diversity. Most everyone who attends this school comes from an upper class family and the few that dont are not really as active in the school.

Kelsey

The worst thing about my school is the amount of rich kids that are there. Coming from a middle class family that didn't brag about money, it was hard to go to a school where kids spend money freely and without being stressed . I worked hard to get to DU and have to be careful with my money since it is an expensive school, but in the long run I know my hard work will pay off. While it may be the worst thing at my school, it has shown me all types of lifestyles.

Andi

They don't have a standard to offer the student scholarship. Not fair enough for international student to get the scholarship.

stephanie

The worst element of my school is its lack of inclusive excellence because The University of Denver is not very diverse.

Sydney

The worst thing about DU is the cost. Even with financial aid, it's expensive to attend, which is really important to consider because it's easy to rack up debt and difficult to pay it off after graduation. If you are a MINORITY apply for all the scholarships and aid you can! There are so few minority students here that they have a huge advantage when it comes to financial aid.

Caitlin

Again, the lack of diversity. It is hard to find kids in the same boat as myself (not upper class partiers).

Laura

I think that the worst this about this school is the money that is so prevalently here. The classes and the school itself is a very expensive school. I do not come from a wealthy family, I am paying for school with my own earnings and loans. So with people here flaunting their wealth, I think that it brings down the view of the community of the university down in some eyes.

Mara

The University of Denver boasts an initiative to increase the diversity of the university, but their tactics to encourage students of diverse backgrounds are a bit deceiving. It is a nice small community of the diverse student populations, but a unified campus is more ideal. All of the Greek Life participants are from rich backgrounds and most of them are Caucasian students, allowing little opportunity for minorities to get involved in traditional Greek Life. DU is trying to increase diversity, but doing that will still leave the rift between the two student populations.

Derek

To be utterly frank, DU caters far too extensively to its athlete population. They can quite literally fail classes, and the coach can override their failing grades by talking to the right people in the registrar's office. While this is most visible with the famous hockey team, it undeniably exists for all varsity athletes. It's a level of corruption that disgusts me.

rachel

There are only really two things i would improve at my is diversity. Sometimes I feel a little alone being one of the few hispanic in the dorm. The other aspect of my college i would change is school spirit. While alot of student attend hockey and lacrosse game other sport rarely get attention. Also there has been on going dispute on the school mascot for years.

Alyssa

I don't think there are a lot of opportunities to meet new students. There are not many clubs and extra curricular activities for students to get involved in. If there are, then they don't do a very good job promoting them.

Cassie

Honestly, I think the lack of diversity is the worst thing, because it often reflects upon and in my opinion, reinforces racial stereotypes. When people ask where I go to school and I tell them, they reply with a "but of course you go there" answer. That is to say, because I am white, I belong here and others do not, which is two premises I do not agree wiht at all.

Megan

The worst thing about the University of Denver is the lack of financial aid, even if through FAFSA you are not eligible the school costs $45,000 a year and we have been told that it will go up 5{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} each year. At this rate it will be impossible for most middle class families to have their kids graduate from the univeristy. It is very frustrating watching many of my friends leave because of financial reasons and knowing that I more likely than not will have to transfer to another school before my senior year.

Huy

The worst thing about my school would be getting into the classes you would like because they try to keep the classes small.

Elizabeth

DU is a very conservative environment for college.

Brian

Most students spend all their weekends either drunk or high. With a low amount of actual work prestige, the student body limps on through academic mediocrity. I would hope that every professor in the department steps up the difficulty and their standard of learning. I did study abroad and loved it, and the work there was 10x the work at DU. I was at a disadvantage even though I graduated cum laude.

Katelyn

I think that the university costs too much and is perhaps not worth the cost.

Erin

The price to attend is very expensive, but they offer very good financial aid awards.

Elise

Unfortunately, DU is a private school and doesn't get as much government funding as state schools, so cost of attendance is quite high.

Ebone

The worst thing about the University of Denver is the amount of money it costs to attend the school. My school costs around $47,000 a year. I think that the amount of money it takes to get an education at my school is outrageous. Then to top it off, my school does not give really good financial aid, so it is becoming increasingly harder for me to be able to attend school there.

Rachel

It is very popularity focused.
