University of Denver Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Julia

Many students at DU are a little preppy and into the social scene. I was able to find friends with similar interests - rock climbing, snowboarding, camping - but we certainly aren't the majority here.

Nathaniel

My classmates are magical because somehow they're able to keep up with the curriculum and maintain a social life.

Quinn

Each classmate is within a clic. While some try to be outgoing, it is eerily similar to high school.

Margot

My classmates are friendly and will finish any material needed to pass the class but most of the student body lives for the weekends when they can go to the mountains and ski.

Michael

My classmates are often some of the nicest most friendly people you will ever meet.

Jeffrey

Most students at this school are white, it's a fact: 67{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} are caucasian. Recently there have been more Asian demographics represented. I believe the school is trying to diversify. Most students are involved in some sort of club or group. The big groups of campus are athletics and greek life, which tend not to mix. I am a member of an athletic team, and I can honestly say I hang out mostly with athletes. I want to befriend people who aren't involved in athletics, but I must admit it is difficult due to the strong connection between athletes, and the huge gap created by greek life and athletics. Someone who was not involved in some sort of group would feel out of place at this school. I guess that makes this school clicky? It really depends on who you expose yourself to though; you could befriend someone on your floor in your dorm and have plenty of friends.

Codi

Ready to learn and egaer to suceed!!!

Corinne

Largely the typical white American kid, but there is definitely a space for other ethnicities, sexual orientations, and every other kind of differentiating factor. People are pretty open-minded. I will say that the tuition of the school does separate the students, because it is students who grew up in more affluent homes who are able to afford it. A little under half of the students are from Colorado, the rest from out of state. Some of the biggest ones are California, Chicago (not a state, I know), & Minnesota. In terms of politics, I'd say it's about half and half, but the joke is that most of the conservatives go to Colorado College in Colorado Springs, and most of the liberals go to DU.

David

DU is not diverse at all. This lack of diversity ranges from racial to personality types. Everyone dresses the same, likes to hang out at the same places, and acts like they are in high school. This type of atmosphere creates a sense of security for many and can be quite welcoming. Most male students wear a dressed down version of prep attire. The female students wear leggings with everything. Snow boots and NorthFace are worn by all. A student that is used to not having their parents provide everything for them would be very uncomfortable. Like i said, this school is a continuation of high school. Independent students or married student would find it hard to relate to other students. A lot of students are from Colorado and others come from states like California and some eastern states. This is a wannabe conservative school. Everyone wants to be a republican and pretend they have a lot of money. However, the financial aid stats on this school describe the student body another way. Im guessing there are many middle class to upper middle class students and a couple on opposite side of the spectrum. We do not have a large population of people of color, nor do we have a GLBTQ presence.

Ellen

The students at DU are here to learn and enjoy the great state of Colorado. Kids come from all over the country, with the most popular regions being Colorado, the Midwest, and the West Coast, although I have friends from Conneticut, Massachusetts, Kansas and Florida as well. I would say that the greatest common denominator of all students is their love for the outdoors, especially skiing and snowboarding. With 100s of clubs, a fun and (dare I say) laid-back Greek life, and amazing academic programs, students are never bored.

Khubaib

There isn't a specific stereotype at the school. We have students from various financial backgrounds, international students; students from both sides of the political background.

Shannon

There are a lot of differnet students at DU and there is definitely a group for everyone. I think pretty much all religious, racial, ethnic groups are represented on campus, and their is pretty much a group for everyone. And nothing is exclusive, I have a bunch of friends that are in the Latin Student Alliance or the Asian Student Alliance, who are most definitely not Asian or Latino. All different types of people interact with each other, but if you're really looking for diversity, you'll find it through clubs like LSA and ASA for sure. ANd personally, my roommates and suitemates are generally much more religious than I am, but we all get along and have no issues.

Mackenzie

Students at DU are generally friendly and easy to get along with. You won't see many students going to class in pajamas, and you may find some Grad students in ties, but normal students keep it classy and comfortable. DU is very diverse in that students come from many different backgrounds, so there is a good mixture of people and there aren't really any cliques. There are so many different kinds of people here that any type of person would find their place.

Crista

The students at University of Denver are amazing! On campus, every student can find a place of comfort and happiness. While every student at DU comes a different background, this university welcomes every opinion and encourages us to use our differences to better ourselves. This is a very collaborative school where teamwork and discussion are encouraged. With students coming from various states across the US and many international students, diverse opinions are standard. Because DU is a private school, we are a relatively small school. This aspect of the university means that you recogonize a lot of people. Walking to class, you will see students who you had class with previous quarters but who still stop and talk. With a laid back, friendly demeanior, DU students are very inclusive. Furthermore, the students not only enjoy socializing but participate in campus actvities to show our Pioneer spirit and support for our peers. Whatever background you come from, wherever your hometown may be, DU is the place for you!

Sydney

The people here at DU are by far my favorite part of the school - people are friendly and welcoming, and if they aren't then you need to find new friends! There is a group of students for everyone here. As for the typical student at DU, he/she is very academically focused, likes to be outside, and hang out with friends. They are usually athletic - club sports and the Alpine club are the biggest clubs on campus. About 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are in Greek Life and love that. We tend to be hard workers and have at least one job or internship while attending DU. We are very laid back people who like to study hard but still have lots of fun!

Marisa

From my experience, there are many people who are members of religious groups such as Hillel and Campus Crusaders. We have a strong LGBT group which is housed in our Center for Multicultural Excellence. Unlike other campuses, students do not typically wear sweats and pajamas to class. They dress casually, but like to take pride in what they wear and look good. DU is really cool because the students here come from all around the country, as well as the world. There is even a strong showing from China and Africa. DU students are very involved in the community. The University of Denver puts a strong focus on Non-profit work, sustainability, and community service.

Emilee

The typical thing to look for diversity in a school is the color of the skin. That's not fair to those students at the University of Denver. As a student here, getting to know your fellow classmates is extremely important. DU prides itself on a school that is extremely diverse- maybe not in the color of the students skin, but in the socioeconomic status of the kids, the sexual orientation, their religion or political views along with MANY other things. The students have so many different experiences and a lot of things to give to the students and faculty learning experiences. Greek life is not as prominent as people think but it may come off that way since they're the most spirited and out there campus activity. There is so much to get involved in and there is a place for everyone at the University of Denver!

Brianna

My classmates are determined, interesting, focused, funny and from all over the world.

Cheyenne

Classmates are very diverse, but sometimes it feels like it mostly consists of jocks/greek life/business students and international students from China (where most of our international students come from). There are some genius kids and there are others that you're surprised got accepted to the (supposedly) hardest school in Colorado to get in to.

About 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students at DU are "Bros". The following is a technical definition of a Bro, taken from urbandictionary.com: " An alpha male idiot. This is the derogatory sense of the word (common usage in the western US): white, 16-25 years old, inarticulate, belligerent, talks about nothing but chicks and beer, drives a jacked up truck that’s plastered with stickers, has rich dad that owns a dealership or construction business and constantly tells this to chicks at parties, is into extreme sports that might be fun to do but are uncool to claim (wakeboarding, dirt biking, lacrosse), identifies excessively with brand names, spends a female amount of money on clothes and obsesses over his appearance to a degree that is not socially acceptable for a heterosexual male." Now, I'm sure that every college has its fair share of white youth who fit this description. But DU, without exaggeration, is THEE archetypal setting for this lifestyle.
