University of Denver Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Natalia

Many of the kids consider DU a "fall back school."

Samantha

Before coming to this school, I wish I had known more about my major program and maybe saved up a little money in high school to take off some of the financial burden.

James

Other scholarships and financial aid opportunities.

Melanie

I wish I had known the value of forming deeper connections with other people. I have always been a fiercely independent individual, and believed that dependence on others was a sign of weakness. Being solitary, I believed, was indicative of strength and intelligence; to be able to survive on one's own is always admirable. I realized, however, upon arriving at this university, that human connection is critical to any experience. To share, build, and overcome in groups or teams is much more rewarding than reveling in one's own glory. Human connection is vital.

Jenny

During the first couple days of school I was very desperate to make friends, assuming that I had to make friends as fast as possible. I didn’t meet anyone right away who I clicked with so I settled for ho-hum friends. As time passed I was miserable with them. Once classes started I met people whom I genuinely clicked with. As I perused a friendship with them I started to enjoy my college life 100 times more. In general I had known to take my time meeting people and find friends who are as amazing as I am.

Codi

That they would raise tution so much each year!

Madeliene

I wish I would have known that the first year is heavily focused on common curriculum.

Corinne

Get out there! It's kind of scary, but it's so much easier to make friends if you're willing to get out of your room and see people. So yeah, making sure you get your homework done is important, but don't stress out about it so much that you don't get to make friends with the people right in front of you. There are plenty of opportunities, but you won't get a thing out of them if you don't put the effort in to get involved!

Lauren

How little funding there really is out there.

Tara

I wish I had known what a bar school this was. If you are 19-21 and over and do not posess a fake ID it is very difficult to find activities to do with friends on Thursday and Saturday nights. I would guess that 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students here either have or have had a fake ID. It is rare that you will find fun things to do on those nights other than staying in or going to the movies.

Natalia

That there is that little diversity, and that you may want to sign up for a class but it's already full.

Lammi

I wish i had known about how diverse the school was before i came so that I could be mentally prepared for the lack of different people in different situations.

Sabine

I wish that I had known that financial aid extended to students at the school is often only extended to American nationals, especially if the aid is need based. I also wish that I had known that the aid packages international students qualify for are often fixed, even if they earn multiple merit based scholarships. I think it would assist a prospective student's college decision if the school were more clear about the aforementioned matter during admissions.

The teaching sytle in the class

Ellen

The financial aid office isn't a huge help. I have a scholarship, but part of it was taken away because they shifted the funds away from my program. You should apply for as many private scholarships as possible before coming to such an expensive school, or you'll be in the same situation as I am--struggling to make ends meet but in love with a wonderful school.

Lena

What i wish i had known before i came to this school was how to access more scholarships

Ariel

How quickly the classes past. D.U. is on the quarter system, so there are 10 weeks classes, they go quick!

Megan

The actual size of the school feels much smaller than it really is because the campus is so tight nit and is not very big in itself. The size is medium, but has a small school feel and I originally didn't want a small school. After being there a year I absolutely love it because I feel like I know everyone and can really get to know my professors personally. It was just an adjustment at first because I was expecting a bigger feel and I ended up with a small school atmosphere.

Regina

I wish I had known about the scholarship opportunites for newly enrolling students before I came to the University of Denver (U of D). I feel that had I known about the Vision Scholarship I would have applied and would have been a top contender for receiving the scholarship. Being an enrollee with The Women's College (TWC) within the U of D, I would like to know how I can access the study abroad programs and if these programs are charged at the TWC prices or the U of D costs per credit hour, and if I am eliglble.

Mary

I wish that I had known that even though the University of Denver is a challenging school with hard work ethic, that you can still succedd greatly. As long as you put in the effort and the time then you will get exactly what you want out of it. I wish that I had not let people intimidate me and that I had known that if you work hard you will get A's and that if you stay in close contact with teahcers and recieve help you will succedd as well.

Emilee

One of the things that I wish I had know before attending the University of Denver is how to talk to other students that are more like you. I went to a high school where everyone was different than I was and did not have the drive that I did. At DU most everyone has the same motivation as I do and I never reallly learned how to communicate with someone like myself before because I never really thought I would find a school that would fit me so perfectly.

Ariana

I wish I would have known more about the financial aid process.

Jace

I wish I would have know how much time and effort it really does take to do well in your classes. Half the battle is showing up to class and participating.

Kristen

I wish I had known how to snowboard!

Brendan

I wish I had known how much the professors really do care about their students. During my first quarter here, a few classes provided quite a challenge for me, and I never went to a professor for help. Partially because I was intimidated, but also because I felt like I would be bothering them, or wasting their time. When I finally approached one of my teachers, he told me, "I wish you would have come to me sooner. I would have happily gone over it with you." Now, I always go to the professors if I have a question.

I wish I had known how helpful the advisng staff and teachers are, because in my first quarter I did not know this until I went and talked to them. If I would have known this before, I could have gotten a lot more help on what to do for my major than I orginally started with.

Lanse

I wish I would have looked more closely in if it would have been financialy possible for me to stay here without having to get so many student loans.

Julia

I wish I knew the kind of people who went here. when I was looking into colleges I only looked at the academic view and the price. i should have done more investigation on what the campus life was like and what kind of people i was going to surround myself with for the next four years. It was intersting to find out on my first day.

Caitlin

I wish I had known what a lack of diversity there was. The student population is predominantly white, upper class.

Lindsey

I wish I would have known how much I would have loved it and would have chose to attend right out of high school.

Brice

I would have liked to know that there are numerous opportunities on campus to meet people arranged by fellow students, especially in the first few weeks. This would make it easier to transition knowing that there will be little problem meeting people that you will be friends with. Knowing that there are many different personality types as well is nice becuase there is always someone to meet that has similar interests and activities.

Leslie

I wish I would have known that there was no A/C. Also, that I should have applied for campus jobs at the very beginning of the year. Another thing is to make sure you introduce yourself to as many people as possible because it will benefit you in the long run.

Kirsten

The food is absolutely awful. The dining halls are never open.

College is nothing like High School. In High school, you can slack off and still make the grade. You can also Kiss Butt to get what you need. In college, it is what it is, and you only gain as much as you put in. There's no Bullsh*tting.

colby
