University of Florida Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Samantha

All of the students were top-of-the-class in high school, so I know I am working with students who also have high standards. Most students are hard working and know how to balance their time between classes.

One of my favorite aspects about the University of Florida is its highly diverse student population. However, no matter how diverse it seems that everyone is very respectful and tolerating of each other. There are numerous LGBT groups and campaigns on campus as well as in the city of Gainesville. There seems to be an equal representation of Democrats and Republicans, but often times the various political groups on campus work together to achieve the same goals. As far as race is concerned, there is definitely a fair amount of students from India, China, and Asia and often times they stick together. The same thing goes for many of the sorority girls. However, the other roughly 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students all mingle and interact with each other. Students come from all different financial backgrounds and I never hear students discussing their financial goals yet they often talk about their career goals.

Simone

My classmates consisted primarily of competetive individuals who were extremely excited to be at the University of Florida and to be part of the Gator Nation.

Kathleen

My classmates are thoughtful and respectful to the professor, for the most part.

Alissa

You can meet any type of person while walking around UF's campus. With about 50,000 students, there really is no generic "Florida Gator" student I could describe. You could meet someone who is completely "Greek orientated" meaning they are 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} involved in their fraternity or sorority, frequently sport the ever popular frat tank, and are seen out on the town most nights of the week. On the other hand, there are a number of diverse students whether it be culturally, sexually, or even financially. UF loves the phrase "The Gator Nation is everywhere." By this, UF boasts that anywhere you look you can find someone who attended this university. I take this quote to mean that any kind of person can be a Florida Gator, the Swamp never discriminates.

Lochlin

The students of the University of Florida are varied, but nothing too out of the ordinary. Walking around campus you're likely to encounter people who seem like they don't have the time to share a smile with someone else, much less a glance, but more often than not, if you get a chance to sit down and truly talk to your fellow students, they'll be more than willing to talk, and even better, listen. The University of Florida's campus can be big and scary, but you're not the only one that feels that way.

Jenny

A diverse group of people all wanting to do well in class!

Cristina

The University of Florida is just one big melting pot of diversity. My eyes were opened when I finally left my small high school and met students of all ethnicities, religions, and cultures. The majority of students that I have met are from other parts of Florida, but a few are out of state students as well. No student would feel left out here because they're is a place for everyone in such a dynamic school. Most students dress nicely when going to class and those who are older make even greater attempts at looking presentable for their classes are much smaller and professors are more likely to notice a student that is well put together. Students of all types interact and there is very little to no segregation amongst the student body. This can be applied to the dining hall as well, for there are always new freshmen and other students trying to make friends. I don't usually hear of students talking about their own personal finances too much because I believe it is more of a private matter. Politically speaking the students at the University of Florida are moderately aware. Most of the students still tend to side with their parents when it comes to politics, but when they become more aware their opinions begin to change. The political party distribution has been half and half amongst students as well.

Vanina

Jacob

The classes are quite small I am told, but we have quite a diverse group there are students from all over the country.

Anayo

My classmates are energetic and vibrant young people who are eager to be sucessful!

Nicole

All very friendly; it is extremely easy to make study groups with your classmates, even if it's a huge lecture.

Melissa

My classmates are smart, friendly and helpful.

Raul

Starting answering! The student are nice and very helpful. There are also a lot of clubs and organization who get you to socialize and know more people.

Jenna

Since the University of Florida is a public university you are likely to find all types of students so the only type of student that might feel out of place here is anyone who doesn't like Football or the Gators(even then, we're known to make you love both before you leave). Most of our students are from within the state of Florida, but it seems like each day I'm meeting a new face from a different state. And we have a thriving community of international students with plenty of campus resources for support while away from home.

Joshua

They are the best!

Kelly

My classmates easily fill the title of Rowdy Reptiles on game days, stuidious students during exam week, and everything in between.

Katherina

There is all types of students at UF so I don't think anyone at all would feel out of place personally because there is clubs for everything and I mean everyhing. People honestly wear whatever they want to class. UF is probably one of the most politically aware and active colleges.

Alexandra

There is so much diversity at UF. Any type of race, background, or culture you can think of attends UF. I don't think anyone would feel out of place, there is a spot for everyone on campus. Students wear a variety of clothing to class. Some just wear sweatpants, but others like to wear jeans. There is a wide array of clothing worn. Students of all kinds interact with one another. They have come from all around the world to attend UF. Many of the students are politically active and show this in and around campus.

Chloe

There is a lot of diversity in the student body at UF, so I don't feel that anyone would feel out of place. Whatever you are (race, religion, sexuality, etc.) you can find an organization for it in which you can meet others like you. What students wear to class varies a lot, some wear extremely casual wear (sweat pants, hoodies, etc.) and others dress up nicely with heels and nice jewelry (etc.), so it really depends on the person, nothing would really be out of place. In my experience, most students are from Florida, though are a few from other states as well as other countries. The main places people seem to be from are South Florida (the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area), Orlando, and Tampa. Students of different backgrounds definitely interact with each other, whether in classes or through organizations. Some students are politically active and some are not, it really depends on the person.

Richard

Diverse is the only word to describe the students at this university. The number of enrolled students numbers well into the thousands and there is too much diversity to label the students. Every individual will find like-minded peers as every group is represented well. There is virtually no chance of feeling out of place at this school. One of the hallmarks of this school is its diversity and I find it impossible to respond to this prompt.

Arielle

Unique and driven.

Christina

In my experience as an active member of the LGBT community, I can honestly say that the campus is incredibly accepting and people in the community are almost always welcoming. Surprisingly enough, it isn't uncommon to see people of differing perspectives interacting in a positive, friendly manner. Everyone seems to be understanding of differing views, beliefs, and lifestyles.

Cindy

The students at my school are incredibly diverse. While it is well known that a large portion of UF's students are from South Florida it doesn't affect the overall diversity of the school because South Florida itself is very diverse. I've had classes with people that coincidentally lived within 4 blocks of my home in Miami and I've had classes with international students from all over the world. The good thing about UF is that there is a place for everyone; with so many organizations and clubs it's difficult to not find at least one appealing. There are religious organizations with megaphones and crosses standing alongside the occasional domino players and fraternities tabling for pledges. The diversity of our students is something I am genuinely proud of but at the end of the day we are all one family. We come together at our highly popular sporting events proudly wearing orange and blue.

Most of the students at UF are from the Miami area I believe. I remember almost everyone I met at Preview and afterwards (in classes, etc) is from that area. Nonetheless, UF is an unbelievably huge melting pot of various races, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, and even socio-economic status. There has been no prominent characteristic of the majority of students I have experienced, which really surprises me because I could easily identify the typical student at my university, with race, religion, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation included. It is not like that at all here at UF. If I had to guess, I would say most students are either Hispanic or white and are of middle class backgrounds. Other than fraternities and sororities (all white and typically all upper class), I am confident that all the diverse students at our school interact because I see it. I'm sure there are several students feel out of place at UF; I know I did and even still do some days, but I this is because it's so easy to forget we're all here trying to do the same thing and that there are others feeling the exact same way.

Alejandra

My fellow peers at the University of Florida are intelligent, dauntless, innovative, enthusiastic and most importantly proud to be members of the Gator Nation.

Esmeralda

The students are very friendly. Most of them offer academic help to one another if necessary. Despite the competitiveness that exist at the University of Florida, students also share involvement or employment opportunities, leadership positions, volunteer work, internship positions etc. that they're aware of, with one another.

Alexis

For the most part, they have a good balance between academics and social life.

Avery

My classmates are all really involved throughout the campus while also maintaning time o study for classes. Many of them are very similar to myself in that the are managers of their time being able to balance between work, school and "play."

Monika

My classmates are hard working, disciplined men and women.

Ana

Stay to themselves

Caroline

I think most anyone could fit in at UF; there are so many different types of people. Students just have to find the right group of people for their personality. Sadly, fashion is not at the front of most student's minds at UF, sweats and norts (Nike shorts) are a common sighting on campus.

Zarna

Most students at UF are from within Florida. There aren't many out of staters. In fact, I've met more international students than out of state students. I feel like the student body is very diverse. There are people from every region of the world. As far as being diverse in their thinking, I'm not quite sure. There are many different racial, religious, LGBT, and etc. groups on campus but...Gainesville isn't very diverse in its own population. It's very much southern. There are a LOT of christian groups on campus. They are always flyering in Turlington Plaza and stuff. I mean, it's not much of a big deal...but it does exist. With that being said though, UF itself is a very welcoming university. The student body is eager to help each other and everyone is always looking for a new friend. I've had many warm conversations with strangers on the buses or common reactions to things going on around campus. Most girls wear anything between sweats and a tee to full makeup, skirts, and jewelry to class. Guys are usually wearing jeans and a t shirt. Frat guys, specifically, will always be in sperry's, shorts, and a button up or tee shirt. I don't think students are very politically aware as a whole. There are student groups and clubs and occasional petitions or rallys, but aside from the students in those groups, I don't see the student body itself being very political.

Ashley

My classmates always sought to outperform other students in every subject area and activity on campus.
