What are the most popular classes offered?

Kristin

ATMS 120 is by far the most popular class on campus. An easy A with a fantastic professor. You learn about severe and hazardous weather and have fun doing it.

Every major has its popular classes, and some of the classes that are popular throughout the University are really fun! Some of them don't even seem like they would be classes, like flower arranging. Below is a list of some of the fun classes I have taken: -Ice skating: learned basic skills -Aqua aerobics: got a daily workout -Tap dance: relearned my favorite kind of dance -Band: performed in the center for performing arts -Creative writing: explored my imagination and developed writing skills -Contemporary TV: watched and analyzed Mad Men, The Daily Show, Glee and Modern Family

Here's a list of course I've either take, or wish I had the chance to: Food Science: Wine Tasting- Must be 21, learn the art of wine identification and properties. Astronomy: Any course- These can be quite difficult, but it's fun to take trips to planetariums, observatories and stare up at the stars for assignments. Creative Writing: Any course- Just yesterday, we went outside, spied on people's conversations, and discussed how dialogue fits into fiction writing. Atmospheric Science: Natural Disasters- Learning about the ways the earth destroys things is pretty awesome. Also... the teacher is super easy. Journalism: Seminars- Most journalism courses are pretty intense (I know because it's my major) but the seminars are different each semester and offer students a chance to learn how to interview, make news and analyze the media. Media and Cinema Studies: Social Informatics- This class is all about social media. My research paper was on Facebook, the newly formed Twitter, and blogs. Enough said. Media and Cinema Studies: Any- warning, these classes are pretty intense as well, but they are rewarding and fun because you'll never look at a movie the same way again. Foreign Languages- Swahili- super cool language to learn.

The most popular classes offered are the history and culture classes that the state mandates. These tend to have the largest diversity in majors.

Honestly, one of the most popular classes would probably be STATS 100 with Fireman. She's a crazy, but really good teacher that makes statistics pretty easy. There's also SHS 120 - Speech and Hearing Sciences intro class. Also GEOL 118 - Natural Disasters. Who doesn't love learning about earthquakes?

It really depends on what people are interested some. There are some really fun classes like ice skating, wine tasting, intro to film, or flower arranging that always fill up really fast. Other than that it just matters what you are interested in. UofI has a wide variety of classes so you can definitely find something that you think is fun.

John

There are a lot of really fun and easy classes that UofI offers each semester but they can fill up fast. Some of these are ice skating, atmospheric sciences, dance, and theater. If you're interested in a subject UofI probably has a class for it.

There are way too many popular classes at Illinois for me to mention all of them here. At a university that offers over 5,000 courses stretching over 150 areas of study, you can imagine that there are plenty of interesting courses to take during your time here. In my opinion, one of the best resources that Illinois offers to freshmen are Discovery Courses. These classes are restricted to freshman enrollment only and cover topics over almost every subject area offered by the university. The goal of these courses is to introduce students to new academic areas, assist them in finding their interests if they're undecided, and ensure that they have a more well-rounded education. Some examples include: Advertising 199: Intro to Digital Media, or Geology 118: Natural Disasters. Definitely take advantage of courses like these!
