University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Kerry

I had gone to a small high school, so I wish I had known the difference in intensity of coursework and length of papers (namely lab reports). With that, I could have better prepared for my first semester and done better academically, which would have then extended through the following semesters. Knowing about the extracurricular activities that I participated in when I finished when I began would have aided in my growth as a person, academically, but moreso socially.

Ethan

I wish I had know how the housing system works and about where to find part time jobs.

Dillon

More about housing. No fault of university, mine for ignoring all info they gave me.

Ashley

The only thing I wish that I knew before getting to school and still wish I knew is what I want to major in, it is a daily stressor of mine not knowing what I want to do with my life. Since I'm a townie, I had a huge heads up about my school, I knew how to get around, where classes were, what campus looked like, about sports and facilities, and the school spirit. Having a heads up about my school is one reason why I wanted to go to the Uofi because I loved it here!

Viren

More about the majors offfered and what they are about. More about which classes to take and when.

Daniel

I went in knowing everything I wanted to.

Enrique

How broke I was going to be.

I wish I knew that just because it was difficult to get into the engineering department, that does not mean the rest of the students are intellectuals.

Sue

I wish that I had known from the beginning that it is different from high school. High school came easy to me, but this I need to work at, which I do now. But, I wish I had known it then. Also, I wish I had known that a person needs to keep up and not wait until the last minute to do the homework.

Morgen

I wish that I would have known more about living on your own for the first time away from home. I also wished that I would have known about all the resources on campus and how to actually survive staying on a big college campus like the University of Illinois.

Derek

I wish I would have known how important it is to be involved in the Greek community.

Stephanie

Nothing, I absolutely love it.

Elizabeth

Most of what I wish I had known, has to do with the education that I was offered in highschool. It was very hard to adjust to the difficult work that was thrown at me. I wish I would have known how to study properly and manage my time without losing sleep.

Joanna

I wish I had someone to to help me with housing, classes, and choosing a major. The options at our school are endless so it can be rather overwhelming for a freshman. The counselors here were helpful but they aren't always knowledgeable enough to help you with all the aspects of the college experience. I wish I knew ahead of time where to go for help in housing, meeting new people, and other aspects other than just education.

Vikaas

How much of a party school this was. I am not into drinking but the main thing to do here is to go to bars and drink with friends. It makes me feel out of place not going out late at night, but this was probably the only conflict I had with this school. Everything else is great!

Molly

I wish I would've lived in the regular dorms. I lived in a private one and it was less social than the others.

Sarah

How much time would actually be spent studying and overal preparation of classes. I also wish I would have chosen my current major beforehand, because the classes that I took for my major in my first semester ruined my GPA. Outside of that, UIUC is a great place to explore opportunities for majors and minors. They offer multiple programs each semester devoted to this purpose.

Brett

Before coming to the University of Illinois I wish I knew about all of the career and academic help offered so that I could have better utilized those resources.

Kelsey

I wish I had known more about how to pick classes and more about my choices for majors and what they included

Westyn

I wish I had realized just how big the campus is. I knew it was very large, but because I only visited once before deciding to attend, I didn't get the full size of the place. I also wish i had realized what the winter conditions were going to be like. The school is not very good about plowing and salting the sidewalks and streets, so it makes it harder to get around. I last wish the tour guides would have given more information about the dorms themselves.

Paula

The classes I should have taken to get some genEds out of the way.

Lisa

I wish I knew how important it is to become friends/aquantainces with your professors because all applications for graduate/professional school requires teachers' recommendations. I waited until my senior year to take the initiative to go to office hours to try to develop a relationship with my professors so they can later write a letter for me. I wish I knew how essential it was this way also it could have helped further my career.

Kimberly

Before I had come to this school, I really wish I had taken the time to see where it is and its facilities. I really would have enjoyed going to college on the west coast as opposed to the flatlands of Illinois.

Samantha

I wish I would have known that most of the kids from my high school and surrounding areas would be going here too.

The competitiveness of my program

Ahbleza

I wish I had know how great this experience was going to be, so that I wouldn't have spent so much time worrying about it before I came!

Natali

I wish I had known that college is nothing like highschool. This meaning that a well balanced and organized schedule is necessary and that keeping up day by day on assignments and readings truly makes a large difference in ones grades. I also wish I had known that in getting one day behind in any class it is very difficult to get back on track and maintain that.

Jim

I wish I knew how difficult it is to get to know and talk to professors one on one and also how difficult it is to get good advising help regarding class selection and progress toward my major.

I wish I had known that my Design materials (for studio, I'm an Industrial Design major) are way overpriced on campus and to buy them all at home.

Nicolle

I wish I would have know what my major would be.

Elias

Just the sheer magnituge of the student body. I knew it was going to be big but just how big didn't hit me until I came down to campus my freshman year.

Christine

The real college atmosphere

Daniel

More bureacracy than I thought

Zachary

I wish I had known more about what kind of coursework would be most applicable to my areas of interest and what kinds of careers stem from different majors but I also wish I had known more about what fraternity life would be like and if it was something for me.

Nicole

I wish I had known about the tornadoes.

Luke

I truly wish I had better prepared financially for school. I had little concept of just how expensive higher education can be and now realize there are opportunities for assistance in paying for college. The experience here--the academics and the social life--have regularly surpassed my expectations and I have no regrets thus far. My parents, unfortunately, are faced with the brunt of the financial burden at a time when they may have hoped to retire.

Bryan

a psych degree is not very marketable and grad school for psych is hard to get into unless you want to go to a 'diploma mill' I definatly regret changing my major from finance to psych, but I don't regret going to U of I. My finance councelor even said I should do both, I wish I had listened. Call it growing pains I guess. But I wouldn't be saying this if I made more money.

Andrea

I wish that I would have known how large of a part drinking is on this campus. I also wish I would have known how large and bureaucratic the university is. Also, I wish I would have known that professors are mostly focused on their research, and therefore teaching undergraduates is not a main priority.
