What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

What I have gotten out of my college experience is the ability to work with other students, withstand financial hardships, and expand my ability to understand other cultures. In serveral of my classes, I have received the opportunity to work with fellow classmates in order to write papers or complete projects. I have learned to compromise with these students, as well as cooperate ideas to incorporate a final idea. I have had a tough time affording college because of my parents divorce, I have learned to cope with the idea that I may not be able to attend college without taking out thousdands of dollars in loans. From different classes, I have studied certain cultures that have opened up my mind further into understanding other people.

I have learned quite a bit about being independent and living away from home. This is highly beneficiary to a student because after graduation from college you are thrown straight into the world and you've got to know how to provide for yourself. The hall I live in has me cook for myself and several other women and that helps me learn how to cook, and also spend money wisely because we have to go out and spend our own money on the food. This is a major hurdle for students because many are not sure how to spend their money the right way, so having this experience helps you realize how fast many can be recieved, and then given away for basic needs. I am also learning how to socialize with people no matter how difficult. During this freshman year many people were uncomfortable because we are away from our home setting and so it was hard to open up, but when you do you learn how to talk with others and learn important facts you need to know. This skill can also help in the business world because you have to talk to people to go far.

As a college student, I have gained a significant amount of insight into what actions I will need to take to be successful in the working world. Through various jobs as a psychological technician, writing center consultant, and children's soccer coach, I have learned that I have a variety of talents, but central to these talents is my ability to work with others. Conducting research with professors has only furthered my interest in learning and constantly asking questions. The professors in the Psychology department at KU have helped me to realize that while there are many opportunities that they can offer me, there are many more that I can create for myself. By discovering my talents and learning how these can be fostered, I can achieve the admission to a PhD program in Clinical Psychology that I am seeking. Through the development of my strengths and the recognition of my weaknesses, I will be better able to succeed as both a graduate student and eventually a college professor. KU has provided me with ample opportunities for academic and personal success, and my experience thus far in college has been invaluable.

I attended my first year of college at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where I wrestled competitively on the Division 1 level. this was a great experience for me and has helped me become the person I am today. Due to my father'sjob transfer, it was decided that my best option was to move to California and finish school there. This move has been critical in my life and it wasnt easy. Picking up and moving roughly 2000 miles away to a new place with no contacts or friends was very difficuly for me. It has worked in my advantage though. I have met people I wouldnt have normally met and experienced things I wouldnt have elsewhere. I believe God has a plan for my life, and moving to California was just a small step in the grand scheme of things.

I have gotten more than I could ever expect from college. After attending Oklahoma State for 2 years and it not working out, I have a renewed focus for my life's direction. Because of my failures in Oklahoma I have become much stronger and resilient. Right now there is only one option for me and that is to graduate with a business degree to possibly pursue further education or head into the work force.

As a college sophomore, I feel like I have just started to explore the variety of areas that are available for students. It is fascinating to think of all the organizations, all the different academic paths, the career opportunities, the friendships that a college student is able to experience. I have joined multiple clubs and have tried to explore new interesting fields in academics in order to get most out of college. It has been so valuable to have the chance to experience a world that is so unique and memorable. It is truly an experience worth the money and even the frustration that might come with affordability. I do not regret a single choice I have made about my school. I feel like each year of college, you grow more and more as a person until you successfully discover yourself and your capabilities. Try everything out there, get involved, do well and you will truly feel lucky.

Having only attending a University for one semester I am surprised at how much I learned. While struggling to learn the balance of school, work, and friends. I also learned the difficulty of accepting myself. Half way through my semester I realized I had tried to take on too much, I couldn't handle the work load I had signed up for ; with great frustration I had to drop a class. After counsel from my mom and older sister I began to learn that dropping a class is not the worst thing. It allowed me to focus myself in a more rounded manner. I learned that it's ok to have a limit and to find out where that is at. Also, that it's better to be less stressed and actually enjoy what you are doing rather than stress yourself out and trying to do too much. My most valuable college experience at The University of Kansas is that pushing yourself is not bad, but that there is a limit to it, like anything else.

I am a non-traditional student with a child. The assistance I have received from faculty and staff have been invaluable. Not only have I received outstanding financial assistance, but the academic assistance I have received and the accommodations that professors have made for me as well as other non-traditional students has encouraged me to do my best academically.

Elvira

I am a very hard working person. I always go for my goal and dreams. I am currently attending a Criminal Justice Program. My mornings consist of working as a waitress, and I attend school at night. This is very hard for me, but I will do what ever it takes for me to succed in life. I have two small children, and for them I will do anything. My children are my life. I regret so many things in life exept for having my children. I have always worked as a waitress and I dont make enough to support my children since I am a single parent. Due to me always working I have never spent time with my children as much as I would like. I wasn't there when they said their first words or when they took their first steps. After that I came up with the decision that going to school was a great choice. I want my children to follow my foot steps and I want them to be proud of me. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I appreciate it so much.

Although I have only been in college a short time I feel that I have already gained a lot. I came out of my first semster at KU with a 3.57, not only did I achieve the grades I wanted I enjoyed my classes and was able to learn a lot. I became involved in many groups and clubs. I have had the chance to meet other students and people in the Lawrence community. Through all these people I have learned that although this school is not far from where I grew up, there are many new things for me to learn and discover. I have seen that I have man opportunities, I would like to study abroad and become more involved on campus. I see that KU has a lot of diversity and that I can learn both in and out of the classroom. I enjoy both immensely and hope to continue my education, and personal growth.

Lisa

My college experience so far has been bumpy and alot of work but still very valuable to me. I came from a very small high school and went to a very large college and that transition has been hard for me but on the other hand has given me a chance to experience more diversity and be more outgoing. College gives me a chance to not only advance my knowledge but to also create a better life for myself and others. One day, I wish to be a middle school teacher and as such I hope to touch many young lives in a positive way. College gives me that chance because it broadens my views on the different types of people and gives me a degree to do what I wish to do. I can't wait to use the knowledge that I have gained through college in the real world and help others appreciate it as well.

Ashley

I have gotten several things out of my college experience including education, memories, important values, and strong friendships. By joining a sorority I was able to meet new people and make great friends. The sorority has also helped me to become a stronger person by being more outgoing and becoming more involved within the institution and the community. Not only has the sorority been valuable to me, but the University of Kansas has also been valuable to attend by helping me become a more dedicated student. The encouragement of the faculty and other students has helped me be successful in my time at the university, and I believe it will continue to help me through the rest of my years there and also after graduation. KU has instilled in me values that will stay with me and continue to help me pursue my dreams even after I leave the classrooms.

Erin

I have been out of school for ten years, and struggling to pay bills through a career in the service industry is difficult. I thought it would be very difficult to get into the swing of things in college. However, after this past semester, I have realized that my work ethic and live experiences give me an advantage over younger students. I finished my semester with a 4.0 grade point average, and I gained a new confidence in myself. I realize now that I am up for a challenge and can compete successfully against other students, and this new-found confidence carries through to other parts of my life! I feel strong, smart, and successful, and I'm eager to face whatever obstacles lie ahead. The University of Kansas has awakened a part of me that urns to be the best, and for the first time in years, I feel proud of myself and my achievements.

Kayla

To put it simply, I have received a new and addicting dose of life out of my college experience. I have been introduced to a world that at first frightened me, caused me to wince or cringe at the mere thought of leaving home. However, because of people, places, and campus faculty, I've been blessed with one of the most enriching experiences a young adult could ever take part in.

My school has a great reputation and is well known across the country. The opportunities I have received from the Business School are priceless. I really enjoy the school and the faculty in the school. I know I can be successful because of the strong network I joined when I became a part of the Business School. The only thing I want is to receieve more financial aid because my family could really use the money.

Alex

To let all of the little annoyances of a highly active academic institution stand in the way of all the valuable life experiences you gain would rob you of all the free learning you did outside of the classroom. I have learned how to live in the real-world, manage my time and money better, and prioritize what has the most importance to life in the long run. I learned how to be patient and diligent in studying for challengeing courses, while keeping a healthy balance of a social life with friends. Variety is truly the spice of life that gives it all its flavor, and college allows you to meet and experience different parts of life and different sides of humanity that I would not otherwise appreciate if I had gone to a technical college, or found a job right away after high school. The foundation that keeps life going are roots that grow deeper and branches that stretch further out, which is a valuable lesson that I am continuing to learn while participating in a diverse array of biology and psychology courses. Truly, the people I met in college are still making all the difference to this day.

I attended the University at Albany for three semesters after I graduated High School and can say that academically, I have never done so poorly in my life. I was honestly not focused on my studies during my time in Albany and the disappointment not only from my family but from myself that followed, was life changing. To make matters worse, I had $5, 000 worth of loans in my name and my parents had loans double that figure and sadly, I had nothing to show for it. I then started to ask myself, "What am I doing with my life?" I realized I needed to redeem myself after such an academic set back so I attended a Community College back home and earned a 3.6 GPA my first semester. My early college experience taught me that the education I am receiving is extremely valuable and should not be taken for granted. It is an opportunity that is given not only to expand our intelligence but to help us reach our career goals and although I went through an academic downfall at first, I'm glad that I was able to have that experience and grow from it.

Molly

I have really matured in the six months that I have been away from home and attended college. No one is there to wake me up, make my bed, or do my laundry. I fly back and forth from LAX to the Kansas City Airport on my own and I park my car there and drive back to college on my own as a Freshman. I check-in online a day in advance to get a good boarding pass on Southwest Airlines and have even learned to use my PDA to complete the process. In college I think more independently about my classes, myself, and bigger issues like the economy, politics, and the two wars that the United States are in. I have really begun to personally grow and now am realizing how much my parents have done for me while raising me and preparing me for this moment. They have suggested that I major in Accounting because it is practical and because I can get a job when I graduate. Now that I see how much it costs to send someone to college this seems like a really good major to help me get a good job.

Virginia

Throughout my college experience, I have learned more about myself than what I have learned academically. I have learned a lot academically, but I truly value what I found within my education. I found the perfect major for me and the opportunities to come with it. My motivators have been my professor and advisors, and without them I probably would have not suceeded in finding myself. Before I entered college I was afraid to be alone or not find my true passion, but in result I have found my passion, my support system and more importantly, myself. I know that when I graduate I will have an open door to a world of possibilities and I can not wait to see what is in store for my future.

Jacqueline

What I have gotten out of my college experience so far is as simple as this: a broader worldview. Yes, I have learned a great deal since attending college, but the most valuable thing to me is my newfound ability to think about the world from mulitple and broader perspectives. This last semester is the semester that I think broadened my wordview the most. I was taking many diverse classes, such as Peace and Conflict Studies, Understanding the Bible, Western Civilization 1, Honors Spanish 217 and Honors Psychology. These classes all made me think in a different way than I had ever thought before: from thinking about living in constant warfare, to religion 2,000 years ago, to understanding ancient philosophers, to glimpsing at the poverty in South America, to understanding how parts of the brain function, all of my classes have been valuable to attend because they have taught me things I did not know before and they are helping me shape my current worldview. Since I have been in college, I have also learned that life is full of orthodoxies we all make, and we need to learn to realize how they can be hurtful to others.

Joel

When I first entered my college, I thought it was a place I didn't want to be. My family couldn't afford to put me in college so I appllied for scholarships and that's the only way I was able to attend this college. I ran into a few challenges while attending this college. One was that my dad lost his job last year, and another is that I will be a father this year and have no idea how I will stay in school or support my child. How does this tie into my experince at this school and why was it valuable to attend? This ties into my experience here at the University of Kansas because I realized that no matter what challenge I face, I have someone there to help me through my challenge. The faculty and staff are very caring and are the best experience anyone could ask for, and they make it valuable to me to attend, because I have someone who not only cares about my academic life, but also help me through my social life so that I can excell in my academic life.

Justin

One of the most in important things that I have gotten out of my college experience is a sense of great respect. Throughout high school, I was able to really rely on my parents for everything, but now at college, I am on my own, which has forced me to grow up and become independent. As a walk on football player, I learned how difficult it can be to manage being a college athlete and still maintain a high G.P.A and do well in my classes, as well as a great respect for authority. My time management skills have increased, and I have come to truly appreciate all the hard work and long hours that my dad has put in throughout his life for our family. My father has become a true hero in my life, and is someone that I look to model my life after for my kids whenever that time may be for me. Before college, I took his hard work for granted, but not I respect him greatly and enjoy every moment I am able to spend with him.

Nathaniel

The most important thing I have done in college is better my character. I learned how to be more responsible, independent, and to live with integrity. I learned real quickly that in college if I want to succeed it’s up to me. Integrity in college is sometimes forgotten because a lot of people just try to get by with the least amount of work. Doing what’s right is hard and doing what’s right when no one's looking is extremely hard. This has helped me out a lot dealing with my school work and always giving it my best all the time. I have also learned to appreciate others. In college you are able to learn from people, whether if its school related or just culturally. One of my best friends is an Asian American, and I would not have gotten the chance to meet him if it weren’t for college. I have learned so much from him in both school and in his culture. For me if I wasn’t attending college I would not be as responsible or independent as I am now, that is why it’s been so valuable to attend

While attending the University of Kansas it has been a great time because of all the traditions kept in the schools history. The university provides a large variety of classes to take and it's always fun to take a class that is not apart of your major, like something interesting as in "Russian Slavic Folklore ". For the majority of the courses I have enrolled in or had taken, the professors have been very educating and interesting. The professors at the university lecture in order to help the students understand and achieve a desiring grade for their course. My social life here at the University of Kansas has been fun just because I've met many great people from my freshman orientation to start my first year of college in the fall of 2009. The school admits great students and care for their students.

My college experience provides me the opportunity to extend my knowledge to guarantee my success in life. College has enabled me to broaden my mind to think more out of the box. I have been able to apply it to my everyday life. Before I make a decision, instead of thinking in the moment I now think whether this choice will be of any help to me in the future. Since I have been thinking that way my choice have only brought me closer to my dreams. When I go to college and I see people studying in the library or in the park and I know those people will be guaranteed a good job and a successful future. It might take time out of your day but in the long run it will all pay off. I will thrive to be one of those people because I have to motive and drive to be successful. The college life is for me, the people I meet, the relationships I build with my professor and fellow classmates that have the same goals I do. My dreams have been lived when I can call myself an, “Graduate of FAU Master in Biology”

Kathleen

My college experience so far has been invaluable. These experiences have helped me figured out my true passion in life: teaching. To do this I began college with a different major, but advisors, professors, and friends were all so helpful with great advice. I saw my advisor so many times to discuss changing my major. Every time she gave me new ideas to research, more information to help, and more contacts to talk with. These contacts led me to the College of Education and everyone I met with there was able to answer my questions without trying to influence my decision. I also met with professors I had already had, and other professors in my first field. They also provided helpful advice without trying to infulence my decision. All these people helped me to make my decision without making it for me, and I am truly grateful for that. I have also made so many lifelong friends here that helped me through that decision, and will simply watch a movie with me. Having all these resources at my fingertips at my university is the most valuable aspect of my college experience so far.

I am a 54 year old single unemployed female, who has discovered that I have the ability to overcome fear of an education. I have decided to advance in my profession of bookkeeping by going to college for the first time in my life and earn an associated degree in accounting. With the unemployment at 9.8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and showing signs of a very slow recovery, in order for myself to have any chance back into the workforce, an education only seemed the intelligent answer. College has been a huge challenge and I have to work very hard, but the rewards are immensely gratifying. It goes to show that in this life you can accomplish any tasks as long as you but your mind to it.

Heather

I have gotten a life, ambition, and so much more.

Standing at the rainy Seattle Airport, my father scratched his peppered-gray beard and sent me off to college saying, "These are going to be some of the best days of your life." As I flew across the Pacific Ocean to the University of Hawaii, I hoped his insight was true. I landed in an unfamiliar place where evergreens were replaced by palm trees and boots by flip flops. Three weeks went by and I began to question his insight. Being a blue-eyed blonde, I was a minority on an island filled with people, food, smells and ideologies that I had never experienced before. How could these strange, lonely days become the best years of my life? Three years later, I turned the tassel on my graduation cap as I looked at my father with a smile. My college experience taught me more than communication theories and vocational skills. It taught me perspective. I learned that although we may eat, worship, dress and speak differently, we seek to be understood and loved. I can now say that college has, in fact, been some of the best days of my life. For these reasons, my college experience has been valuable.

Monica

The most valuable thing I learned in college is something I learned half way through my undergraduate career. It is it is not always about earning the A; it is about learning and retaining information from classes, internships, and extracurricular activities, in hopes that you can use it in your desired field. The grade is simply a reflection on how well you followed a syllabus. Students feel the need to get the 4.0 at any cost. This can include utilizing old test files, pulling all-nighters, or even cheating. Students may attend class, turn in homework, and do well on tests, but not actually learn anything. In my 100 (introductory) level BIOL and CHEM classes, I would study how to do well on tests. If the professor told the class the test was similar to online quizzes, I would study the online quizzes rather than the textbook. Therefore I did well, but if I was asked a year later, I could not explain basic chemistry such as entropy or Boyle’s Law. I was challenged when I took upper level BIOL classes. You have to understand the fundamentals, because specified biology (microbiology/neurobiology) builds of general chemistry and biology.

The biggest part of the college experience that I have found benefitial has been the way that coursework has improved my resourcefulness, efficiency, and responsibility. I think that attending college instills an invaluable work ethic within you that is guaranteed to be needed once you enter the workforce and into society. For whatever career you choose, you must know how to produce quality work within a given timeframe. College trains you, through repetition, how to complete things on a schedule, how to prioritize your tasks, and how to communicate your ideas with others. I then learned how to network with others and to allocate time for group and individual study. Certainly a university education exposes and elevates you to a professional level that you would not have very well developed otherwise.

Colleen

I have grown more from attending this school than I could ever have imagined. Coming from out-of-state I have learned so much about living on my own, starting a new life, and becoming an independent adult. And this school provides all the tools to help me with that. There is the perfect balance in the education between offering students the support and help they needs as well as pushing them to their highest potential and allowing them to succeed through their own hard work and passions. The school spirit, community, and alumni are unbelievably amazing and supportive. When at this school, you feel you are a part of a giant family. Everyone is there for everyone. I feel safe at all times. The city itself is the most unique place I've experienced. It's very oriented around the school but also provides so much culture and local emphasis. I am becoming the person I want to be because of this college and I couldn't be more thankful for the education, teachers, people, and university in general for giving me the opportunities to do so.

Cameron

The thing that stands out to me from my college experience so far is how a school with an exceptional national reputation for athletics and academics can create a surreal atmosphere on campus and around town. It's something I didn't know existed until I transferred to school at KU. With the history of the university, and it's current state of excellence, I feel proud to be a Jayhawk and lucky to have an opportunity of becoming another legend. It is not just the academic and athletic reputation that creates the atmosphere, it also stems from getting to experience it. Cheering on my beloved Jayhawks at football and basketball games until I have no voice is a nice way to experience it. So is being educated by professionally-experienced professors, as this better prepares me for my career. Something that stands out to me is the amount of knowledge the campus possesses. Almost unfathomable amounts of knowlege. Now I know what they mean when they say, "A place of higher learning." My professors, advisors, and even school athletics coaches are superb role models and I hope to be as successful as them one day. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Alexis

What I have gotten out of my college experience is that it surely is no walk in the park. When I was in high school it seemed like they held your hand the whole way. College is definitely not that way. I almost gave up in my first semester because it was like I was the only one who didnt know how to go about getting into college and getting started. I was eventually able to find some students and make friends, who in return helped me figure out this whole college thing. Im certainly glad I didnt quit because after I got the hang of how things worked, I feel in love with college. I love everything about it from getting to chose what YOU want to study to being able to be treated like an individual. It is highly valuable to me in the aspect of if I dont further my education then Ill just be another nobody. I want to be able to earn a name for myself after I have completed college and i hope college whell help me in doing so.

Going back to school was a dream that I thought would go unrealized. My late teens and early twenties were fraught with self-imposed disaster; an agressive eating disorder and an addiction to heroin almost cost me my life several times over. I never thought I'd be able to piece my life back together, much less become a mother and then full time college student! It didn't happen all at once, that's for sure. Going to college, for me, was an opportunity to make up for lost time and to prove to myself that I had not only overcome my addictions, but could also overcome my dependance on the support of others in favor of becoming a self-sufficient woman and a mother who could comfortably provide for my children. This goal is still in progress, and I've had to ask for plenty of help along the way. But each time I walk into a classroom and open my notebook, I am one step closer to monetary success. More importantly, I become more well-rounded, more inspired, and more aware of the world around me and the positive effect that I can have on it.

Ashley

My college experince at a local community college has been rewarding at times, but also depressing. There are so many requirements to transfer to a four year school and my problem has always been with the math requirement because I am not very good at math. The rewarding aspect of my college ecperience is that my community college provides some of the best tutoring services i have ever experienced. Before I knew about tutoing I struggled so much with logrithms and somple fraction problems and this saddened me so much because I knew that If I did not pass this math class that I would not be able to get into a four year school. The peer to peer tutoring worked wonders for me; It was great to have someone sit down one on one with me and explain the steps to any math formula. Of course I could always ask my professors, but not every teacher here is approachable. My college experience has been valuable because to me because of these turoring services and not to mention the amount of financial aid and money I am saving by attending a two year school.

Amber

Although I'm only a freshman at the University of Kansas, I have learned a lot through my classes. My perspective on college has been redefined and I've gained new knowledge with the different classes I have to take. There are many options and lots of help for students. This college does everything it can to help students succeed and so far I have been succeeding at KU.

Robert

When you finally get to college, you find out that you have become your own person. You also realize that you are the only thing that can stop you from doing what you really want. The feeling you get when you learn those things may scare you, but soon after that , you will begin to find out who you really are. That is what is great about college.

Shelby

I've learned how to cook for myself, I've learned to do daily chores and I've learned a lot about responsibility. I've learned (by watching) that it may not be the best idea to start your weekend on Thursdays and that you should definitely go to class!!! I've learned that public speaking class WON'T actually kill you. I've learned you have a choice in almost everything you do. You have a choice to stay out til 4 in the morning, to go to sleep early or study until the wee hours of the morning. You can get up for that 8 am class during winter or sleep til your heart's content. And it's what you do with those choices that make or break you. It's been valuable to attend because it's important for everyone to get that "college experience." everyone needs to learn the responsibility, the independence and the courage that they will use for the rest of their lives and I think in college is where you learn all of those important life skills. You grow to become the person you want to be, or at least I have :)

Courtney

Attending community college has been one of the best experience of my life; it has opened doors for me that I never thought would be possible. School and education has always been important to me, but because of financial reasons, I was always afraid that I would not be able to attend college. When I found out that not all hope was lost because of my local college, I was ecstatic. I love going to school because I have learned so much about myself and my interests. Sadly, community colleges are usually put down because of the student body that attends there; however, my being a student there helped me grow into a well-rounded and better educated person.

Russell

Initially, the degree allowed me to excel as a restaurant manager, with results that set records at the Company level for food cost variance and cash variances. Later in life, this degree allowed me to be an officer in the United States Army and provide service and leadership to over 700 Soldiers.

Though I have only been in college for about a semester, so far my college experience has been more fun and informative than any other experience in my life. The thing about college that is different from other forms of schooling is the personalization that goes into your education. I have chosen my major, and every class that I have taken, right down to the teacher and the time. College allows you to personalize your education in a way previously unknown and I find that to be incredibly beneficial for students in general. Becase of the fact that the classes you take are completely up to you, and the wide variety of classes offered, you can find just about anything that appeals to you and take a class in it, and I personally believe that personalization and interest are the two keys to education. College hs been valuable to attend because I am learning things that I would otherwise never have the opportunity to learn, and in an environment that is based "work hard, play hard." Not only am I recieving the education of a life time, but I am also recieving the time of my life and eternal friends.

Rebecca

By attending college, I have become more confident about myself and I have figured out that life is not all about work and grades; it's also about having fun along the way. I have only been here for one semester but I have learned more in this one semester than I have in my entire high school career about life and learning. I have been able to obtain a 3.8 GPA this semester but at the same time I have met a lot of new people and have had the time of my life. I don't waste a single moment that I have here because being able to attend such an amazing school is a very fortunate opportunity for me and I am forever grateful to my parents for helping me come to this point. These economic times are rough for everyone, so I wouldn't ever take this opportunity for granted. The education that I am receiving from KU will greatly contribute to my future, and I know that every penny my parents and I spend on that education will be worth it.

Julie

I am a non-traditional college student. I have been going on and off since 2001. I finally decided to apply to the Photomedia at the University of Kansas and go back full time. My first year in college wasn't so good, and then I just decided to go through the motions for a few semesters. Realizing I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I took a little break. I started researching every possible major there is and went back part time to see if anything particularly grabbed my interests. I did the part-time student and full-time worker thing for a few years, with no definite found direction. At this time however I knew what I did not want to be. A waitress. I was stuck in this job/career path with no foreseeable way out or up. I continued to research careers perpetually. I think I found my nitch! I am loving this new adventure I have embarked on at KU! I will have my degree here in a year and a half and can't see what the world has to offer once I have obtained the necessary life tools.

The education I've received from these last three years in college have shaped me into a new person. I've fallen in love with Astronomy, a subject I previously had no knowledge of. There are people out there who have had such profound thoughts, it's hard to decide what is more impressive, the thought, or the fact that they were capable of thinking it. Such thoughts as Einstein's general theory of relativity, and Newton's work on the Principia. These men have shown me why it is important to apply the human mind to things beyond that of your own daily interactions, and what is possible when you do so. To simply live with your eyes down and limit your thoughts to nothing more than the tasks of your job, or happenings in your household is to restrict the true potential of the imagination. Every time I look at the stars in the sky I think that men such as these have given us the tools to learn so much about these celestial objects that are millions of miles away. I often wonder who from my generation will be the next Einstein or Newton. Why not me?

I've learned a plethora of knowledge while attending college. I learned a great deal about myself and my ability to build my character, push myself, use my will, expand my understanding of the courses I took, and how to become a mature adult in the midst of it all. I would encourage interested prospective students to truly inquire about continuing education. There is so much more to college then books, studying, and tests. One can blossom into a person they never knew they could be. What's better than gaining that experience while further gaining an education?

My college experience has made me have a positive look on my future. As a sophomore in my classes I have already started working with real life clients. It has been an exhilarating experience and taught me more than any imaginary client could have. I have also learned a lot about my people skills and my ability to network. I have learned how to be outgoing and really put myself out there and branch out. Unfortunately, the year I came to the University of Kansas they changed the school I applied for. All the classes I took to get a step up on my curriculum ended up not being required anymore. I have ended up spending a lot of extra money on classes I do not necessarily need with the new curriculum. This has been very hard on my parents and taught me that I have to be ready for any unexpected changes and to adapt to them. I have definitely learned the expense of college and because of that I have learned to respect my family.

So far I have learned about resposibility regarding getting my homework done and on time to the proper class on the proper day. Also I have learned to keep up with the fast pace of college life which is very much different from college life. Also I have learned that it is great to be able to make up your own class schedule ont he days and times you want them.

Out of my college experience the enrollment process was great. The faculty and students had great attitudes, and it made me feel very good to attend school at UCO. My advisor really worked with me on my schedule to make sure that I got the process of enrolling in my classes online. The campus is big, and I think I will get the hang of walking around to get to class, because I love to exercise. I know at times I will get lost, but I know someone would be able to direct me to where I need to be. I love UCO!

As a full-time employee and, at times, a full-time student I have learned the value of a work/life balance. As a student I have learned the value of listening to and discussing one's opinions as well as opinions held by others. Spending a semester abroad further taught me the difference in cultures and the value of my own country. I have learned to perservere through the subject matrial that does not directly apply to my major as well as that which is difficult for me to interpret. Being responsible for my own education (without the help of parents) has taught me to truly value and focus upon each course. Since I have been a member of the full-time workforce for three plus years I have also learned the unsurpassed value of an education. While work ethic is something that can be developed outside of the educational sphere, a degree in today's job market is priceless. It is an asset that cannot be replaced. It is a goal that I will not give up until it is completed.
