What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I have recieved the best art education under the greatest instructors in the world. I have gained life long friends and wonderful memories that I will forever cherish. I have also recieved a wonderful education from many great professers in a variety of fields that have changed and opened my eyes to things I've never thought about.

Coming from a private Catholic high school, public university was a big change for me. I was surprised by how individual everyone was. My high school was almost completely composed of conservative Catholics. In college, I now have friends from many different religions with political ideas that differ from mine. Because of how much everyone else differed from me I was really able to discover who I really am. This is why my college experience has been valuable to me. During high school I took the same classes, had the same political ideas and same religion as everyone else. In college I am now an individual with my own ideas. I am currently practicing my religion because it is what I want to do. The classes I take now are classes for my major that interest me. College has really helped me to understand that people are very different and do not have the same idea on anything, but in the same way this has led me to understand where I fit in and the individual that I am.

I've learned a lot about myself: what kind of environment I need to create to suceed academically and professionally, how driven I can be, that sometimes if you just ask for something you can get it. I learned how to make friends and ditch them, how to catch a bus at two in the morning, how to read a map, and how creepy the stacks in the research library can be past dark.

The most important thing that I got out of my college experience is that my life is my responsibility. Good, bad, boring, exciting; you choose your own path. I also found that by chosing your own path you are never stuck in a certain position; just because you choose a particular direction, it does not mean that you won't choose to follow a new path at any given time. The skills I learned in college, including but not limited to: how to take personal responsibility, how to properly interact with other people from many different walks of life and how to take care of myself were learned both in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom, including after graduation. After gaining employment during my undergraduate experience and after, I have learned that one does not have to go to college to learn the things that I have learned however it is the most worthwhile, efficient and fulfilling way to do so!

Cindy

I have been able to pursue an area of study that I am passionate about, while learning how I can turn that passion into a lifelong career. I have been privaledged in meeting some incredibly wise and intelligent professors that are willing and able to help me get where I want to go. Having this support is valuable because no one knows what the economy is going to be like a couple years from now or even next month so having something solid to rely on is more important than ever.

Casey

During my college experience, for the first time in my life, I have been able to just be me and be accepted for being myself. I am usually a very shy person and not very outgoing, but people here are so friendly that you don't have to be worried about saying the wrong thing and upsetting someone. It is just a warm, small-town attitude that every resident of Lawrence seems to inhabit.

My college experience so far as been quite interesting. I am attending Anoka Ramsey Community College and plan to transfer to UMD in the Fall of 2011. The one thing that has made my choice of attending this community college first is finances! Money is essential for college. The rates that some of these colleges charge are way out of my league. But because I have been applying for scholarships like crazy (and its pays off) I have been able to go through my first year of college without any student debt or any loans. This is why it was a good choice for me to attend this community college first. But UMD isn't as cheap and I need every penny I can get. I am excited to further my education to the highest extent. Education is the key to success! I plan on receiving as much of it as I can!

Quoted by William Butler Yeats, "Education is not the filling of a pale, but the lighting of a fire." Deciding to major in Community Health at KU has made this quote ring extremely true to me throughout my college experience thus far. My studies have opened my eyes to a bigger picture of what it means for a person to reach ultimate wellness. It involves a more holistic view on health that focuses on the cause and prevention of disease. It's about playing the role of not only doctor, but also teacher. Coming to KU and choosing this path has already lit a greater fire in my life than any amount of cramming for a test and getting a good grade could ever account for. [Not to say I haven't pulled that off. ;)] But in conclusion, I believe that the value of my education at KU rests in the discovery of my ultimate career goal of becoming a Naturopathic Doctor. I also believe that learning never ends, and I am passionate and willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill this dream in order to truly enlighten others with the flame of wellness. :)

Throughout high school, I always knew I would go to college. I come from a middle class family background with college educated parents as role models. When I was applying for schools, I was scared of big universities so I chose to do 2 years of schooling at a community college and then I would transfer to a four year university. When I came to KU, I was still unsure of my major and plan in life which made it very difficult to meet people and enjoy school. I am now focusing my life on becoming an early childhood special education teacher and I wouldn't change it for the world. I believe that college has taught me to truly be myself and to pursue who I am and who I want to be in society. I cannot put a price on becoming comfortable in my own skin and I feel college has allowed me to find my inner person and that has been the most valuable lesson of all. I have learned I can do whatever I set my mind on and that confidence has allowed me to become the person I am today.

Leadership experience and intellectual developpement.

Sarah

My college experience has taught me responsibility and discipline. By the completion of my Bachelor's degree, I will have spent a total of seven years completing classes in the undergraduate curriculum. This is mostly due to the fact that I changed majors once, but I also transferred schools. This is also partly due to a couple semesters that I felt school was not that important to me. Now, I realize how valuable my education is and I sincerely regret my lack of ambition during those semesters. I am on track to complete my degree by the Spring of 2012 and it is getting harder and harder to make sure I have enough money complete this goal. Graduating from college is now my number one priority and I take it very seriously. If not for the demand of performance from my professors, I would have taken this education for granted. I cannot express how thankful I am to have learned these lessons now while it is not too late for me to succeed in the classroom, and in my life after graduation.

Paige

I'm happy now. It's a new thing for me.

David

My college has helped me fullfill my dreams of beieng able to do what I love to perfection of working on cars. I never thought I would be someone to attend college because I have always hated school. Now I love waking up every morning to go to school and do what I've always wanted to do!

Dillon

KU has always been my dream. Now I'm here and it's amazing. I'm surrounded by amazing people, a beautiful campus, and I know I'm getting the best education. I've made real connections here and it's now my home. I've been able to find myself and express myself the way I want. KU is a great place to be you, everyone gets along and everyone is treated like the best.

Sara

I have learned to push myself hard for the academic goals I want. I have been given a great foundation for research and my studies through the facility at KU. This is valuable to me because this education is what I need to get me to the career and life I want to live, which is a career as a professor at a university just like the one I attend. Here at KU, I am able to study classes and material in and out of class that interests me and fulfills my desire for knowledge. I have always had an extreme passion for learning and going to college here has helped fulfill that passion.

Carrie

I believe it has been valuable to attend The University of Kansas not only because it has allowed me to be achieving a degree at one of the best universities in my opinion, it has allowed me to learn more about myself and venture away from the help of my parents. I have learned a lot about myself and have met so many new and wonderful people here. My college experience so far has been a lot about life lessons and learning to grow as a person, which I believe is very important. I am excited to learn many more things and become more and more independent each and every day. Without attending a 4-year university, I don't believe I would have learned these vauluable first-year lessons that I have learned so far by attending The University of Kansas. I am grateful for these lessons that I am learning each and every day no matter how challenging they may be.

Jessica

My college experience has been just average so far. I have been stressed financially to go to a 4 year university, so I have been staying at home and going to a community college. I do have to say, it has been a great learning experience, the classes have been challenging and rewarding and I have been learning a lot. It is just not the same as being away from home. I think that going to a community college has been good because although I have been stuck at home with my family, I still attend my home church. I was fortunate enough to have the time to fundraise through my church and go on a month long mission trip to Belize. It was a great eye-opening experience. I was put into a culture completely different from my own and was able to grow as a person. I gained long-lasting memories and relationships. So although community college hasn't given me the whole social aspect of a university it did give me time to do some traveling and mission work. That is valuable in itself. However, with this money it will help me pursue my goals further.

Rebecca

During my college experience I have discovered myself. KU has allowed me to get involved in activites that help the community and give me life experiences I could not have received anywhere else. I have gained independence and have met many wonderful individuals through college activities and classes. My courses have allowed me to work to my potential and achieve my academic goals. The information that I learn in my courses is relevant, valuable and hands on. I get great in the field experience at KU and I get to be involved in community as well. I have been able to get a great education and life skills that I will have forever. The activities and experiences that I have gotten from KU have shaped who I am and have made me a better person. Without KU, I would not be the person I am today, nor would I have the same experience and knowledge.

College is a nice wall of reality. You slam into it pretty hard, but it's at a slant, helping you to get back up on your feet. I was a student that didn't need to study in high school. I had moved so much throughout grade school that my friendships, for the most part, were short lived. College has helped to not only improve myself as a student, but my social competence as well. It has been a difficult adjustment, though well worth the difficult work. Long nights in front of a paper and textbooks are more and more common as I struggel to define the mechanism of an organic reaction or the pathway of expression for an allele. Add in a part-time job and it becomes a massive juggling act. I now also have more than my family to care about. I work to memorize birthdays and schedules so I can congragulate my friends with a present or after a difficult test. It's a bit more work than I was accustomed to growing up, but I love the trust , support and confidence we give eachother through these early college years.

Reanda

Attending university made me realize that time was a key component of success. Using time wisely and limiting distractions is what the University of Kansas has taught me, and has made me a better student.

Kendra

It is difficult to sum up and put into so few words the tremendous value I place on the experiences I've had while attending a short year and a half at the University of Kansas. I am from Colorado and was terrified to move from Denver- a large metropolitan area just a short distance from the mountains I'd grown up around; to Lawrence- a small college town surrounded by farms; where "downtown" consists of one single road called "Mass St.," often occupied by hippies and the homeless. To my surprise, I developed an immediate love for this place through the presence of others. Whether it was during athletics, in my classes, or just walking through campus, everyone I met when I first came here had such an enthusiastic, welcoming spirit. Jayhawk pride was always undeniable. The dorm experience introduced me to friendships I know I'll have forever. I've found a degree I'm excited to pursue and unlike high school, I actually enjoy what I'm learning. It's cliché but I've never been as happy as I am at KU and I'm excited for the future this education is going to provide.

Upon transferring to the University of Kansas from a local community college, I was exposed to a very different world. Suddenly I became aware of the vibrancy and diversity of Kansas life. The staff and faculty are open-minded and progressive. They welcome new students with open arms and do everything possible to help them to adjust to the unique KU atmosphere. I have also learned valuable study habits from my peers. As a premed student I was able to find others with similar goals and given a chance to fit into my own niche within the community. The emphasis placed on outreach and involvement made it simple to find a volunteer organization tailored to my goals and interests. Finally, the culture of the University of Kansas itself sets it apart from other schools. While the student body is diverse, there is an unrivaled level of school spirit. I truly believe that most Jayhawks would agree that there is nothing like singing the alma mater or hearing the chimes of the campanile bells. Becoming a student of KU has instilled within me a desire to give back to my community and find my own place to grow. Rock Chalk!

Eric

A lot of my experiences started to culminate my senior year of high school. I am now in the first semester of my sophomore year in college, and my experiences are still culminateing to explain and teach me. I imagine they always will. One thing I have recently learned of myself pertains to my belief system. It was something I picked up and tweaked from a Kevin Smith movie, "Dogma," from which I saw from my search of wisdom and truth through comedy. The basic idea I pulled away from the movie was to not hold beliefs but to hold ideas, as an idea is easy to change and work with as opposed to a belief. I took this idea and with help from quotes I have read and morphed it to fit me and I found that once one believes something it is almost impossible to see past the darkness you have created. This may seem like a silly experience to you but my attendance of the University of Kansas and a few of its professors have helped to shape my views, or lack of; whereas in my hometown ignorance would have taken over.

While I may be a few years away from attaining my degree, my return to school has been accompanied by a passion that I lacked in my youth. I am not here because someone told me I had to be, or thought I should be. I am here for me and only myself. I have long anticipated the opportunity to return to school, and I plan to make the most of it. I cannot change the past, but I can make the future much brighter. My degree will certainly be my torch to light my path into the career I have dreamt of for the better part of my life.

Isaac

So far I have learned the value of applying ones self to achieving a goal, and to not give up. That is incredibly crucial to every person looking to better their lives and the lives of those around them. This place can offer you the opportunity to test your true potencial.

RYAN

My college experience has been very beneficial to my life so far. I now know that I want to major in business, open up my own company, and build upon that. The college I am attending, Harrisburg Area Community College, has been very supportive in helping me with financial aid, determining a major, and finding classes that would work with my schedule as well as having the capability to transfer those credits if I decide to go to a university later on. College taught me responsibility, to think for myself, and how to become a better person so I can have the future I desire.

David

During my college experience so far, I have learned a great deal about the interactions between people. Thanks to a majority of my Psychology classes, I have a much better understanding of the way the human mind works and how people interact. I have also been fortunate enough to take classes from professors that are at the fore front of their fields. We are able to see and interpret Psychological studies in class just days after they have been completed. The knowledge that I have gained from my 3 years here has been invaluable and I would not trade the whole experience for anything else.

Wraye

The most valuable thing I have received from my college experience thus far is how to study. I went to a very good high school, but even so I never knew how to really study. I would memorize the information for a short term, just so I could do well on the test, and then I would forget it. However, in college I love what I am learning. Because of that, I really want to learn and remember the information. I spend a lot more time reading material, making notecards, and studying with friends.

My education matters a great deal to me. Education is a catalyst for forward progress, and college is the best place to obtain an education. College opens up countless opportunities for one’s future, including better job options and chances for personal growth. A college education is fundamentally different from secondary education. In college, you are in charge of your education. Students are expected to think for themselves, ask questions of experts they now have access to, and explore courses and degrees that didn’t exist in high school. As Albert Einstein said, “Information is not knowledge.” A high school education teaches students how to pass tests and memorize information. A college education teaches students how to learn. University life exposes students to new subjects, people, and ideas. Its influence in my life has been extraordinary. The counselors, professors, and other undergraduates I have met helped me discover what particular disciplines I most enjoy, make the connections that will support me the rest of my life, and construct a plan to follow the dreams that give me hope. Education matters to me, as it should matter to anyone wishing to make a difference in this world.

Josie

Of course I have obtained an uncountable amount of knowledge and at the end of the spring in 2011 my Associates Degree. From having to take classes outside of my interest to complete my general education and my AA degree I have learn so much about things I never had thought about before. I have learned the basics of physcology, sociology, and this semester philosophy. It has opened my eyes to many different aspects of the world. I have not only learned about subjects that weren't particularly in my interest; I have learned about many new things in my subject of interest, science. I have become much more interested then I had been before. Aside from my acedemic gain I have created friendships with classmates, teachers, and advisors that I will never forget.

Jayne

My college experience has helped me to reevaluate what I want out of life. It has helped me focus on setting my goals high for the benefit of myself, my future family, as well as the communities I live in. It has exposed me to a culmination of information, people, places, and experiences that I could not have been exposed to in any other way. College has created within me a thirst for knowledge, but is also able to quench that thirst. I am truely grateful for the privilege of being a student. I hope that I am able to receive the funds necessary to continue my college experience, so that one day I can use my developed skills and knowledge to build up the people and the places in the world around me.

Rachael

I am a music major at the University of Kansas and the most important thing I am receiving out of my college experience is performance opportunities and connections with other music students. Aside from that generic answer though, I would say that the friendships that I formed in high school have grown considerably in the past two years that I have attended KU. I grew up in Lawrence, Kansas (where KU is located) so many of my peers from my high school also enrolled in KU. Though many would assume that we would grow apart and join different clichés, we stuck together and instead grew and learned with each other, and I think that this has really given me a greater sense of loyalty and compassion for these few select friends. Receiving my college diploma, to be blunt, will simply make it easier to find a job after I graduate. When I 'grow up' I would like to be a musician, but in order to do that I still need to attain a steady and strong day job so that I can support myself and my future family.

Dustin

Education, why would'nt you obtain the gift of a college experience or future learning? One of the main reason's I'm here on Earth is to learn. I'm always learning, researching, discovering. Why or how could one value sitting on a sofa, viewing "reality television" for hours and hours. Why wont they seize the day, and experience reality on their own? This is why I believe in attending higher education institutions. The exceptional knowledge, hunger for learning, and experiences you will obtain are hands down once in a lifetime. I am making the most of this very experience. Going above and beyond my projects and assignments. Making films for Environmental Science finals, when I'm majoring in Animation. You can attend Harvard and just accomplish your goal of getting good grades to please your parents. Walking away with little knowledge. Being pushed into slaughter. It is your evaluation. It is up to you, the student, to push yourself farther down that path. Discover the path none will conquer. I will take that path, and will enjoy the opportunity. For I live in America, this is my job. It is my birth right. It is my life.

Jason

What i have gotten out of college experience is basically that you have a chance or peak at what is to come being an adult working and meeting new people. I learned how to interact with other people as a responisble and respectable adult would. I would have to say it has defineatly been valuable to attend college as it is helping me learn how to talk and meet people of a higher standard and their higher expectations.

Kathy

At the age of 44 and having now decided to go back to school I understand the value of attending because I have experienced what the world has to offer by NOT attending. I was somewhat successful with my "God-given" talents, having forsaken the educational route at an earlier age; but what one cannot see while young and immature is how your education will truly fulfill you in an existential way. And as you get older your circle of vision widens and begins to encompass others. At some point it becomes more about giving back and making a difference than about yourself. Is mortality already creeping in in your 40's?? What soul print will I leave behind? I do believe that what I will get out of my experience is a richer appreciation for the (educational) journey.

Amanda

When I was younger my sister and I would take our Barbies on adventures around the world so traveling has always been something that I have dreamed of. When I enrolled at KU I heard about their success with Study Abroad Programs and immediately began researching different opportunities. This past summer has been the most valuable and best experience I have had yet at KU. I finally had the chance to study abroad with the Design Department for three weeks. I experienced culture shock as soon as I stepped onto the streets of Venice. I left my family and was surrounded by a foreign language. Traveling to museums, churches, and studying statues and architecture in a foreign environment changed my perspective on design. This experience through KU has changed my life forever and I am currently working with them to find internships abroad to further my knowledge on other cultures. There are so many opportunities and advantages that they offer and I would not choose to go to any other University.

Leah

So far, my college experience has given me a greater outlook on life. Not only have I been able to expand my knowledge, but I've also been able to be a part of a new experience, with new people and places. Being a military kid, I've only ever known how it was to live on a military base, which is a relatively small community. Beng a part of a large campus at KU, I've been able to adjust to a larger community and experience different people outside of military affiliations. I've also been able to expose other people to my own experiences, such as living overseas in South Korea, and moving around my whole life. Being able to attend attend a school like KU is such a great experience. The people here are amazing, and I've experienced so much in the short time of my first semester as a Freshman here. Being in college is a valuable experience because it lets people learn and grow as students and gives people the oppurtunity to figure out their life plans while leading them to a successful path. It takes work and dedication, but college life is wonderful.

Laura

KU is not the first school that I have attended. I went to a different university for four years, but I could never see myself as being a part of the campus. My major was not something that I was passionate about, and I finally decided to transfer to KU. Here it is a completely different story. The campus is infinitely bigger than my previous school, but I feel more a part of this institution than I ever have anywhere else. My professors are well educated and interesting, and they are legitimately more concerned with the individual success than anything else. I am so glad that I attend this university. I see myself figuring out more and more who I am, and what I want to do with my life. I am constantly challenged by new ideas, and even though I really do have to work hard to keep up and on top of things I know that my education is becoming well rounded and reinforced by the concepts that I am learning here. All of these things are helping me grow, and that in itself is why it has been valuable for me to attend this institution.

Kimberly

The time I've spent in college led to much more than I ever expected or could have even anticipated. After convincing myself that a bachelor's degree was unnecessary, I enrolled in the local community college to gain financial freedom. The degree I earned was a temporary fix, a solution to an immediate financial need. What I didn't expect, however, was this temporary fix would unlock such a strong desire for knowledge! I earned honor society status with Phi Theta Kappa, made lasting friendships and I experienced life in a way I never imagined. I learned to serve my community, my college, and I grew as a person. When I finished my degree, I utilized my “temporary fix” and went on to work in my field of study but it left me longing to complete the bachelor’s degree I had dreamed of as an adolescent. My college experience left me with lasting memories, but most importantly it opened my eyes to the opportunities that await anyone who is willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. Time has shown me that making a good living won’t satisfy the passion I hold in my heart for education.

Alison

The college experience provides the opportunity to work with instructors, meet other students, and connect with professionals in your area of study more efficiently than any other organization that I am aware of. I have the opportunity to network with professionals as a pre-physical therapy student. I am able to prepare for my future, while being surrounded by others with similar goals. I have the opportunity to grow as a person through my courses, socialization with others, and volunteer experiences. With each lecture and conversation throughout the day, I am connecting with my future goals and peers. By asking one question, I am able to ask an advisor for input or learn of other opportunities that would allow me to learn about the world after college. I learn of the experiences that others have had, educationally or occupationally. It is fascinating making the breadth of connections that one does at a university. Attending college is an endless learning opportunity-both day to day, as well as for the years ahead.

Schuyler

While attending college, I have gained the experiance of being on my own and taking full responisibility for myself. Also attending college has been beneficial to my independent study habits which i have acquired. I have been making connections with companies and project managers of Sprint, IBM, and Cysco, Inc. I believe that these connections will benefit me into getting my name out into the world and hopefully allow me to get a job in the field of my study.

Amy

In my experience in college so far, I have learned a lot about life and the "real world" that I was completely unaware of before. I have learned that sometimes you have to do things that you don't exactly want to do in order to achieve a greater goal. When I was a little kid I grew up thinking that my life would be like a movie. Happily ever after. It's come to my attention in the past few years however, that it takes a lot of responsibility to be an adult. In college you have to manage your time wisely, manage your money and not overspend, pay bills, attend classes, and many other things that require an understanding that you have to work for what you want. I'm only in my first year of college, and I have already had my eyes opened to a whole new world of responsibility and possibility.

Alexandria

I absolutely love school-- and the University of Kansas in particular! I have met hundreds of new people and truly discovered who I am as a person. The college experience can initially be quite terrifying. It was the first time I had been out on my own and I didn't quite know what to do with myself. I was no longer defined by my family. But, thanks to the fact that I had a wonderful RA and floor my freshman year, I have now once again been able to define myself as a person, not only in terms of being a Jayhawk, but by the essence of who I really am. And the University of Kansas has been essential and integral in helping me along this journey.

Erin

THe most important lesson I have learned here at the University of Kansas is time management. I am constantly trying to figure out which task is most important and how I can have a social life. As an architecture student and RA my life is full of tasks that take up a lot of time, and in order to function I have to make lists and manage my time wisely.

Im currently enrolled as a student at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesvile, FL ,but I can't afford any classes. Unable to recieve financial aide due to my parents income. Im a very swift, self-motivated, honest, intellegent individual. I always had this drive to further extend my education because without it many people settle for less. Im writing you today because I am one of the young minds still able to get up and see what is out there to help me achieve my goals in life. I would be honored to recieve this scholarship to further my dreams and aspects in life.

Kayla

College has been a growing experience for me. I've not only grown academically with a more challenging curriculum, but I have also grown in maturity and spiritually. The all around college experience which has allowed me to be on my own, has helped me to grow in ways I could not fathom before entering college. I'm looking forward to continuing my growth and development not only as a student, but as a person.

Leah

I feel like I have grown as a person. I'm learning to take care of myself, and learning to choose my friends and the people I associate myself with wisely. I'm learning what it's actually going to take to live in the 'real world' once I graduate, and I've learned to be responsible for my schoolwork, as well as other things such as laundry and handling money. I'm really learning overall to just be smart about the decisions I make. Don't get out of control, but you want to have a bit of fun too!

Latisha

I graduated from high school in 1994, and since that time I have attended college with hopes of attaining a degree. This journey hasn’t always been easy. I have experienced a lot of disappointments and unexpected delays along the way. However, there have also been moments of extreme pride, strength and self gratification along my college endeavor. I have managed to maintain the honor roll, raise two sons and volunteer within my community. I’ve often been forced to postpone taking classes due to financial reasons, but I have always been committed and determined to furthering my education. I believe the reason I have never given up on my dream of earning a college degree is because I value the importance of education. Education is the one thing in life that can never be taken away from me. I love to learn and more importantly, I love the feeling of knowing that while learning I'm becoming a better wife, mother, employee and member of society. To me, earning a college degree is more than just a plaque to hang on the wall. It’s the power to enhance my future and allow me opportunities to excel in life.

Christopher

Being around so many different people opens up your eyes and makes you more aware of the things that are going on outside of the regular norm that we're so used to. It creates a broad spectrum that allows to grow into and become more accepting as people. I feel this is an amazing experience that truly encompasses the meaning of the college experience.
